About the Author
Jay M. Shafritz is Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is the author, co-author, or editor of over forty textbooks and reference books on business and public administration. He holds a doctorate from Temple University and an MPA from the Baruch College of the City University of New York.

J. Steven Ott is a professor and dean emeritus at the University of Utah. He has written numerous books on organization theory, organizational behavior, nonprofit organizations, and organizational culture. His recent journal articles have appeared in the International Journal of Organization Theory and Behavior, Public Organization Review, Public Performance & Management Review, Public Administration Review, and Public Integrity. He teaches organizational behavior, organizational leadership and change, the nonprofit sector in society, nonprofit organization management, and organization theory. Ott worked as a management consultant to organizations in the nonprofit and public sectors for 26 years before joining the faculties at the universities of Maine and Utah. His Ph.D. is from the University of Colorado, his M.S. from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his B.A. form Pennsylvania State University.

Yong Suk Jang is a professor of Public Administration at Yonsei University. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Stanford University and taught at the University of Utah (2001-2004) and Korea University (2004-2008). His current research interests include macro-comparative analyses of nation-states and organizations, governance, and neo-institutionalism. Recent publications include Classics of Organization Theory, 6th & 7th ed. (Wadsworth Cengage Learning) and articles in Administrative Science Quarterly, Asian Business and Management, Sociological Perspectives, International Sociology, International Journal of Comparative Sociology, Social Science Computer Review, Development and Society, Korean Public Administration Review, Journal of Korean Association for Policy Studies, The Journal of Educational Administration, Review of International Area Studies, and Quarterly Journal of Labor Policy, Human Resource Management Review, and Korean Journal of Sociology.

Great Collection Of Classics Of Organizational Theory

This is another collection of readings that illustrate the intellectual development of an academic discipline. Organization theory is a discipline that is important to understanding how the building blocks of modern society work and how that shapes the behavior of those members within each organization. The readings are representative of what happened in the development of this literature. You also are treated to some commentary explaining why what happened did and explanation for each development. All in all, a great book.

About the Author
Richard J. Stillman II received his Ph.D. from the Maxwell School, Syracuse University, and is a Professor of Public Administration at the University of Colorado at Denver. He has written and edited books on various aspects of Public Bureaucracy and its management, such as PREFACE TO THE PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, THE MODERN STATE AND ITS STUDY, and PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION: CONCEPTS AND CASES. His books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, and Hungarian. He was awarded the William E. and Frederick C. Mosher prize for his scholarship in the field, and has received a number of fellowships: NASA University Fellow at Syracuse University, Public Administration Fellow and Research Fellow at the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, Robinson Fellow at George Mason University, and elected fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration.

Man I love this book

If anyone wants to learn about government this a great start.
Easy read and yet very complete. It's also no heavily biased.
The word Bureaucracy has a negative connotation in our society,
He does not meet it this way.
He uses is it more like how he dictionary defines it: As administration of a government chiefly through bureaus or departments staffed with nonelected officials.

About the Author
Dr. James W. Kalat received his B.A. degree from Duke University, Summa Cum Laude, and then continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his Ph.D. in Psychology under the supervision of Paul Rozin. Currently Dr. Kalat is at North Carolina State University where he is a professor of psychology, teaching both introductory psychology and biological psychology. Besides having authored the best selling biological psychology text, Dr. Kalat has also written an introductory psychology text titled INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY, now in a Seventh Edition, and has published articles on a variety of diverse topics such as taste aversion learning and on the teaching of introductory psychology. With co-author Michelle Shiota, he recently wrote a new textbook, EMOTION (Thomson Wadsworth, 2006). He recently presented to rave reviews at the Texas Community College Teachers Association and received the same when he presented at NITOP (the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology).

as for textbooks.....

as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus. this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap. the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this!

cells over systems

I'm a biopsychologist. Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting. I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed. Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date. It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively). Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis.

About the Author
Stan Stojkovic (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is Professor of Criminal Justice and Dean in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he has taught since 1983. His primary teaching responsibilities and interests are in the areas of corrections, public administration, philosophy, delinquency, and criminology. His major research interest is in the area of correctional administration. He has authored or co-authored several other textbooks in addition to CRIMINAL JUSTICE INSTITUTIONS: ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT, including an introductory text on corrections with Rick Lovell. He has been a presenter at professional conferences, and his essays and reviews have been published in such journals as Pace Law Review and Criminal Justice Policy Review; a forthcoming essay on prison administration will appear in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. In addition, he has served as coordinator of the California Leadership Institute for the California Department of Corrections, and most recently as fiduciary agent for a High Intensity Drug Traffic Area Grant funded through the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

David Kalinich (Ph.D., Michigan State University) joined the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) community in 2002 as Chair of the Criminology/Criminal Justice Department. Dr. Kalinich served on the criminal justice faculty at Michigan State University for 18 years, and as Criminal Justice Department Chair at Northern Michigan University for six years. He also served as the criminal justice graduate school coordinator at Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids, Michigan, for three years before accepting the position at FAU. Prior to his academic career, he worked as an adult parole officer for a ten-year period for the State of Ohio. Dr. Kalinich has published a number of books and articles in the field and has an extensive background in planning and providing training programs to criminal justice professionals.

John M. Klofas (Ph.D., SUNY Albany) is Professor of Criminal Justice, Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, and Director at the Center for Public Safety Initiatives at Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Klofas has worked in adult and juvenile probation in Massachusetts and served as a caseworker in the state's maximum-security penitentiary and as Director of Classification for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. An active member of several professional CJ organizations, he reviews for a variety of journals and consults with national agencies on crime research and policy. Dr. Klofas is a founding trustee of Metropolitan Forum, a citizens group interested in analyses and solutions to community problems. His research focuses on criminal justice management, crime policy, prison and jail issues (including crowding), and metropolitan patterns of crime and justice. In partnership with Don Pryor of the Center for Governmental Research, Dr. Klofas received support from the National Institute of Justice for a project involving working with the local criminal justice system in strategic research efforts to reduce community violence. A 2012 grant supports evaluation of New York State's CeaseFire Violence Prevention program.

Good for its use

While one of the most casually written textbooks ive read, it does convey the necessary material in a way that is understandable and readable. Stojkovic makes the abstract ideas behind these beauracracies, but seems to be lacking information on management and leadership. Although this is mostly a lost cause anyway because leadership is for the most part nonexistent in criminal justice systems. Because of their makeup, these organizations rely on MANAGEMENT tecniques and leadership takes a backseat. Overall a good text, just a little confused.

About the Author
Theodore Cohen is the Ella Fulton Dunham Professor of Sociology and current chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Before coming to Ohio Wesleyan in 1984, he earned his B.A. in sociology from Brooklyn College (1977), and his M.A. (1981) and Ph.D. (1984) in sociology from Boston University. In addition to his teaching career at Ohio Wesleyan, Cohen has taught at a variety of public and private universities including Boston University, Northeastern University, Clark University, and Rowan University. Throughout these different educational contexts, he has found that enthusiasm, humor and determination to engage students to apply sociological concepts to their own lives, has worked with equal effectiveness whether in classes of nine or ninety. He brings those same objectives to his writing. In 1990, Dr. Cohen received The Sherwood Dodge Shankland Award for the Encouragement of Teachers, one of two awards Ohio Wesleyan gives for teaching excellence. In addition to being the co-author of The Marriage and Family Experience since its eighth edition, Cohen is also the editor of a text-reader on men and gender, Men & Masculinity: A Text Reader (Wadsworth 2001). He has also published articles and book chapters on aspects of men's lives, especially their transitions to marriage and fatherhood, and on the family and work lives of a sample of nontraditional couples (some in which men were caregivers and women wage-earners and some in which spouses worked different or unusual shifts). Cohen's own family experiences include many of the issues covered and addressed in this text. He has been married, widowed, in a long distance relationship, remarried, separated, a father, stepfather, and caregiver. He currently lives in central Ohio, where, in addition to his children, his passions include the music of Tom Waits, New York Yankees baseball, Seinfeld reruns and Modern Family.

Buy this book only if you have to

This book is required by the college where I teach, otherwise I would not use it in class. It's poorly researched. Information is presented in sweeping generalizations. The authors never discuss the nature and scope of sociological research. As a result, studies that merely "suggest" certain trends are given equal weight and emphasis as more rigorous, conclusive research. In many chapters, the authors contradict themselves from one page to the next. As a college instructor, I have had find extensive supplementary material to correct many of the mistakes in this text.

Another issue of importance for college students is the cost of this barely useful text. This looseleaf edition, while inconvenient (yes, you need a binder), is significantly cheaper than the hardcover edition. If you are required by your school to waste your money on this book, it makes sense to purchase the cheaper edition.

Generalizations and presumptions! 11th edition

I was recently enrolled in a college course at UNT on 'Marriage and Family'. Unfortunately, this was the textbook the instructor insisted on using. The book is filled with generalizations about how different genders and races raise their children, many of the generalizations are stated without any source. At times it seems as though the author's only intention is to get the readers teeth grinding with anger. The chapters would go on and on about presumptions that I feel the author's know very little about. One source was a survey from 30 years ago(!)A survey from 1978 may hold little weight in 2008. There was little info on couples who choose to NOT have children, is a childless couple not a 'family'? If you are currently enrolled in a class that uses this text book, just keep the real world in perspective, and take the authors opinion with a grain of salt. After finishing the course a few weeks back, I finally got the opportunity to return the book to it's proper location (a dumpster).

This text is both in-depth and well-informed. Nearly every faucet of the "family experience" is covered here, as well as looks at a variety of different cultures and their contrasting views to our own societal expectations. Taking this class and reading this text was probably the best thing I did in college, and I was neither a psychology nor a sociology major. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the subject matter, employing what I have learned from this book to everyday life has helped me immensely, as well as my friends whom I regularly supply with advice. This is one textbook you won't want to sell back, and very worth the obviously hefty textbook fee.

About the Author
Steven G. Brandl is an Associate Professor in the Criminal Justice department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His research interests include police decision-making and behavior, police use of force, the relationship between the police and the community, criminal investigation, and program evaluation. Brandl has conducted numerous research projects with several major metropolitan police departments. He is the author of numerous articles in professional journals and co-editor of VOICES FROM THE FIELD: READINGS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH (Pope/Lovell/Brandl, Wadsworth 2001).

David E. Barlow is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at Fayetteville State University. His research interests include multicultural issues in policing, white collar crime, and the history, ideology, and political economy of crime control in the United States. He has worked in the criminal justice field as a correctional officer, deputy sheriff and university police officer in South Carolina and Florida. Barlow is the author of numerous articles in professional journals, co-editor of the book, Classics in Policing (Anderson 1996) and co-author of the book, Police in a Multicultural Society: An American Story (Waveland 2000).

Excellent classic for anyone studying criminal justice or in law enforcement. Examines scholarly artickes that are considered 'classics' in this field of study. The book covers a lot of topics in law enforcement such as policing strategies, community policing, police use of force, and many issues important for students in criminal justice--this is used in graduate studies & is interesting for everyone else. The author explains the articles & covers issues currently in the media that people are curious about--the book could have been written today.

About the Author
Lyman Ott earned his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Education and Master's degree in Mathematics from Bucknell University, and Ph.D in Statistics from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After two years working in statistics in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ott became assistant professor in the Statistic Department at the University of Florida in 1968 and was named associate professor in 1972. He joined Merrell-National laboratories in 1975 as head of the Biostatistics Department and then head of the company's Research Data Center. He later became director of Biomedical Information Systems, Vice President of Global Systems and Quality Improvement in Research and Development, and Senior Vice President Business Process Improvement and Biometrics. He retired from the pharmaceutical industry in 1998, and now serves as consultant and Board of Advisors member for Abundance Technologies, Inc. Dr. Ott has published extensively in scientific journals and authored or co-authored seven college textbooks including Basic Statistical Ideas for Managers, Statistics: A Tool for the Social Sciences and An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis. He has been a member of the Industrial Research Institute, the Drug Information Association and the Biometrics Society. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and received the Biostatistics Career Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical research and Manufacturers of America in 1998. He was also an All-American soccer player in college and is a member of the Bucknell University Athletic Hall of Fame.

The work has three related objectives: 1. it is an ethnobotany - a work that explores how, through the medium of culture, people shape and are shaped by the environment in which they live, 2. it is a work that synthesizes results of some 10 years of research done by Pearsall during the Jama Archaeological-Paleoethnobotanical project, and 3. it is a work that provides Pearsall with the opportunity to illustrate paleoethnobotanical research methods, an important component of contemporary interdisciplinary archaeology. Pearsall took as her subject the 3,600-year-old archaeological record of the Jama River valley in northern Manabi, Ecuador, and she determined what plants people selected for food, fuel, building materials, and ritual; evaluated the impact of agricultural activities on the tropical forest environment; and examined the response of populations to volcanic ash fall disasters. Broken into four parts, this case study starts with an introduction to the field of ethnobotany, then goes on to describe Pearsall's experiences doing field work in the Jama River Valley and the results of her research, and concludes with an illustration of how ethnobotany fits into and contributes to archaeology.

About the Author
Deborah Pearsall is currently Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri, Columbia, as well as head of the American Archaeology Division Paleoethnobotany Laboratory. Her current research focuses on the evolution of agricultural systems in Ecuador and on refining phytolith classification and processing procedures. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1979.

This product said it was in adequate condition, but it was in much better condition than I thought it would be. Shipping took a couple weeks, but I would buy from this source again.

I used this book in statistics classes while working on a BS in accounting. This is a very good textbook. My instructors also compiled their own notes for the students which complemented the book perfectly. Many real-life and thought provoking examples in this book.
