Waste of Money....

This is probably the worst textbook on this topic because it does little justice to the concepts. I found it hard to understand exactly what the book was talking about and what the exercise questions were asking. In many cases, I was unable to find any corelating content in the book, between questions and answers.

The book also references some languages such as ADA , FORTRAN, ML, etc. Unfortunately, it simply touches each one vaguely. I was REALLY put off by this book. It is very verbose and does not approach topics in a linear way. I used the book for an online course and resorted to consulting other books, such as "Learning Computer Programming: It's Not About Languages" by Mary E. Farrell.

Too vague and general

I used this book for my programming language concepts course, and I was quite disappointed. It's just way too vague, trying to cover too many things. And few, if any, of the concepts from chaper to chapter carry through to develop a cohesive understanding. I also think most people who'd consider this book (or take a class requiring it) should have the knack to pick this stuff up pretty quickly from experimenting and perhaps a website tutorial or two.
I did enjoy the chapter on axiomatic semantics, which offers a straightforward approach to proving programs and more importantly loop invariants. But that was hardly worth nearly $100.

This book is very vague, doesn't go into enough detail about anything and the examples and practice problems are badly worded and poorly explained. HORRIBLE. I've heard that Programming Language Pragmatics by Michael L. Scott is a great book.

Range of topics is the following: How to change your habits, stress, spiritual and mental health, lifestyles, fitness, nutrition, weight loss, sexuality, addictive behaviors, and prevention. The book approaches health from the perspective of a young adult student. Be aware that the book does not come with the access card that is advertised inside the front cover. The access card is a separate course that you have to pay more for. If you are unsure of what you are purchasing then call to order instead of ordering online. That way you will not be disappointed when the access card is not inside the book.

An Invitation to Health

The book is like branch new. I received the book just in time. I would say I was very satisfied with my purchase through Amazon. I had purchase books from other places but since the image of the book was not displayed and ISBN was misleading I end up with a book that I don't need and since it was very cheap, it was useless for me to send it back since shipping cost will cost me more. Having the image and ISBN displayed will really make a big difference for online purchases.

About the Author
Bruce Russett is Dean Acheson Professor of International Relations and Director of United Nations Studies at Yale University. Since 1972, he has edited the JOURNAL OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION and has been president of the International Studies Association and the Peace Science Society (International). He also has taught at Columbia University, MIT, and the Free University of Brussels and was Visiting Professor of International Capital Markets Law at the University of Tokyo. He has held research appointments at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, The Richardson Institute in London, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, and the University of Tel Aviv.

Harvey Starr is the Dag Hammarskjold Professor in International Affairs and Chair of the Department of Government and International Studies at the University of South Carolina. He is the former president of the Conflict Processes Section of the American Political Science Association, the APSA vice president, and the president of the Peace Science Society. He served as editor of INTERNATIONAL INTERACTIONS and associate editor of the JOURNAL OF POLITICS. He also has taught at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and the Australian National University.

David Kinsella is Professor and Chair of Political Science, and Director of the Public Affairs and Policy Ph.D. program in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and has held faculty positions at American University and the University of Missouri. His primary areas of research are the global arms trade, regional conflict, democratic peace, and just war theory.

Not Meant to be Used Alone

This is one of two texts used in Rice's International Relations class. While the bulk of our reading comes from this text, after a month, I figured out this book was definitely not meant to be a stand-alone. Thus, the second text (Case Histories in International Politics by Kendall W. Stiles). Allow me to explain.

This book essentially talks extensively about various key concepts in international politics. Let's use power as an example. This book devotes an entire chapter to a discussion of power in international politics. It goes on to discuss how, for example, various elements of a state leads to the perception of the state's relative power. Then it talks about how the state uses its image in the world (based on this perception of power) to get what it wants. Bottom line, the book is mostly conceptual. It is true that it has included countless examples from the real world to illustrate its points, but this is the reason why it cannot be a stand-alone.

Case Histories in International Politics by Kendall W. Stiles makes a great complement to this book in that it involves more extensive case studies of various international conflicts in a more or less unbiased tone (the author's intention, as stated in the foreword, is to remain as unbiased as humanly possible). At the end of each case study is a list of exploration/discussion questions. This is where the concepts from Russett, Starr, and Kinsella come in handy. The idea is that you learn about concepts in international relations from World Politics, and apply them to international conflicts to try and explore why certain conflicts took place.

I believe the whole point of this book is to remain as conceptually-minded as possible, which is also its weakness. If you are looking for a way to appreciate international politics better, this is probably not the best book for you. But if you are looking to find a way to run a more extensive study on international politics and are willing to go for a supplemental text to achieve that goal, this book can be helpful in strengthening the conceptual side of international politics.

This book is really hard to understand !!!

When I bought this book I thought it would develop my interest in politics. Instead I found that this book does not make sense at all sometimes and assumes that the reader knows all the events it is talking about. I don't recommend this book at all !!

This book was required reading for a college philosophy class. Unlike other boring textbooks, Salmon's unique approach to teaching critical thinking encourages classroom discussion and the application of practical situations. Each topic is related in text to many real-life examples, famous literary works, and quotes from the great philosophers. This "worldliness" makes Critical Thinking not only interesting, but actively engages the reader.

In a small aspect, a few examples may seem opinionated. When an example quoting the Bible was being debated in class as fallacious, my professor commented, "I like this book... it pushes buttons!"

The most important aspect is that the information will help you in any career. Dr. Derlega is Professor of Psychology at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. His research interests focus on self-disclosure in close relationships, coping with chronic diseases (especially HIV/AIDS), and gender roles. Dr. Derlega has written and/or edited a number of books on self-disclosure, social interaction and privacy issues in living with HIV, and gender and close relationships. His most recent book (with Kathryn Greene, Gust Yep, and Sandra Petronio) is, "PRIVACY AND DISCLOSURE OF HIV IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP: A SOURCEBOOK FOR RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS."

Dr. Winstead is Professor of Psychology and Chairperson in the Department of Psychology, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. Her research interests focus on gender and close relationships, social support, and coping with multiple roles. Dr. Winstead is co-author (with Jessica Griffin) of "Friendship Styles", published in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WOMEN AND GENDER, Volume One (Academic Press, 2001). About the Author
Jiu-Hwa Upshur received her B.A. at the University of Sydney in Australia and Ph.D. in history at the University of Michigan. She is the author of two catalogs on Chinese art and many articles on Chinese history and has lived and traveled extensively in China, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th edition, 1994) and co-editor of LIVES AND TIMES: READINGS IN WORLD HISTORY (1994). Since 1993 she has been a member of the world history committee of the College Board.

Janice J. Terry is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She is the author of THE WAFD, 1919-1952: CORNERSTONE OF EGYPTIAN POLITICAL POWER, MISTAKEN IDENTITY: ARAB STEREOTYPES IN POPULAR WRITING, and numerous articles on contemporary events in western Asia. Dr. Terry has lived and traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Africa. She is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th ed., 1994). In 1990, she received an award for excellence in teaching from the state of Michigan.

James P. Holoka received his B.A. from the University of Rochester, his M.A. from SUNY, Binghamton, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where he was a Rackham Prize Fellow. He has taught Greek and Latin, classical humanities, and ancient history since 1974; he received a teaching excellence award in 1980 and a scholarly recognition award in 1991. He is a published translator and the author of three textbooks and over sixty scholarly articles and reviews in such journals as American Historical Review, Classical World, Classical and Modern Literature, and Transactions of the American Philological Association.

Richard D. Goff received his A.B. from Duke University, his M.A. from Cornell University, and his Ph.D. from Duke University. He has taught courses in western civilization and specializes in teaching twentieth-century world history. He is the author of CONFEDERATE SUPPLY and encyclopedia articles on southern history and culture. In 1983 he received a distinguished faculty service award. He is co-author of THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRIEF GLOBAL HISTORY (5th ed., 1994).

George H. Cassar received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of New Brunswick and his Ph.D. from McGill University. He is presently Professor of History at Eastern Michigan University, where he has taught European and military history since 1968. His output is extensive and includes half a dozen books on various aspects of the First World War as well as co-authorship of A SURVEY OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION (1987). In 1985 he received the prestigious Faculty Award for Research and Publication from Eastern Michigan University. He is currently working on a book related to British strategy during the Great War.

Moderately disappointed.

While this text is designed to be an overview of world civilizations, there are several key pieces missing. The author takes not a Eurocentric perspective on history, but rather with an Asian bias. More is devoted to Asia and the Middle East than anywhere else. Events as well as important historical figures are mentioned in passing, but never discussed in great detail. Causation of events is left vague and leaves much to be desired. The essays throughout this volume, as well as the second volume, do not have authors, making it difficult to use them as references with proper citations. However, the primary complaint I had with this as a college level text is the lack of criteria. Not once do the authors that put the work together state what makes a civilization differ from a society or culture, what makes a historical figure worthy of mention, or why the events mentioned were selected.

Overall, I'd use this as a very rough and incomplete outline when studying world civilizations. Definitely use other more complete sources for the more specific understanding.

About the Author
Ronald Munson is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Medicine at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He received his PhD from Columbia University and was Postdoctoral Fellow in Biology at Harvard University. He has been a visiting professor at University of California, San Diego, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School. A nationally acclaimed bioethicist, Munson is a medical ethicist for the National Eye Institute and a consultant for the National Cancer Institute. He is also a member of the Washington University School of Medicine Human Studies Committee. In addition to being the author of a number of science and ethics books, he is also the author of the novels NOTHING HUMAN, FAN MAIL, and NIGHT VISION.

David A. Conway received his Ph.D. at Princeton University and has written in the areas of social philosophy and philosophy of religion. Currently he is Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.

Andrew Black has been teaching in the Philosophy Department since fall 1999. Before coming to UMSL, he taught for eight years at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and for one year at Dartmouth College. He holds the Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Black specializes in the history of philosophy, particularly the philosophy of the seventeenth century. He has published articles on Descartes, Malebranche, and Leibniz. Other areas of Dr. Black's expertise include analytic philosophy, logic, and the philosophy of science.

Good, quick introduction to logic

Munson and Conway do a very fine job in this little text, introducing the subject matter of logic with enough detail to get you started. There are, of course, lots of textbooks out there that go into lots more detail. But this one is about right if you want to pick it up and cover the basics on your own. You learn what an argument is and how to recognize them and analyze them, what the basic types of arguments are (deductive and inductive) and how they differ and how to assess each type for its success as an inductive argument and for its validity as a deductive argument. There is coverage of basic propositional logic and proofs, and coverage of categorical syllogisms and Venn diagrams. There are chapters on fallacies (though I have a minor quibble with them on which fallacies to include in an intro text, the chapter does give a good overview), on probabilistic reasoning, on causal reasoning, and on writing logically.

I assign this one as a basic text in my introduction to logic course -- largely because I can't see the point of assigning a big textbook that will cost them $90 when this one covers what I need, and I can supplement it with other materials of my own choosing. One advantage you would get from some of the more expensive texts (e.g. Hurley or Copi's introductory textbooks) is access to a computer based program that can guide you through problems. Otherwise, in terms of coverage and clarity, this text works quite well.

slow delivery time

I placed the order for this book on Janaury 11, 2010. When I checked the tracking information it said it was being sent from Virginia on Jan 12th. I did not receive this book until February 1st. I don't know why it would take 3 weeks to ship a book from Virginia to California. This book was for a college class for my son and he had to go two weeks of classes without a book. I would not recommend this seller if you want your order delivered in an reasonable amount of time.

About the Author
Hedley Nosworthy is Professor of Music at El Camino College, Torrance, CA. He has been teaching Voice for 25 years. His own career included leading tenor Opera roles both in Europe and the United States, considerable Musical Theater, Oratorio, and Concert experience, and numerous recitals. His students are international competition winners, Grammy award winners, professional Opera, Concert, Broadway, and Jazz, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Heavy Metal, and religious music singers. He spent almost six years studying with William Vennard on the Graduate and Post-Graduate levels at the University of Southern California.

Peter Summers earned both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in English Literature from Cambridge University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film from the University of California, Los Angeles. A published author and successful screenwriter, he has worked in post-production for many major Hollywood films including "Gladiator," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Star Wars Episode II."
