About the Author
Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University, and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The 2004 recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University, Dr. Hoeger continues to research and lecture on exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. In addition to PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Dr. Hoeger has published several Cengage Learning texts, including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness (with Terry-Ann Spitzer Gibson). Dr. Hoeger is a former luge runner and Winter Olympian, and renowned fitness and wellness innovator. About the Author
Steven C. Hause is Senior Scholar in the Humanities and Co-Director of European Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He was formerly. Professor of History and Fellow in International Studies at the University of Missouri¿St. Louis, where he has won the Chancellor¿s Award for Excellence in Teaching (1996) and the Pierre Laclede Honors College Teacher of the Year Award (1989). He is the author and co-author of three previous books on the history of the women¿s rights movement in modern France, which have won four research prizes: WOMEN¿S SUFFRAGE AND SOCIAL POLITICS IN THE FRENCH THIRD REPUBLIC, with Anne R. Kenney (Princeton University Press, 1984); HUBERTINE AUCLERT, THE FRENCH SUFFRAGETTE (Yale University Press, 1987); and FEMINISMS OF THE BELLE EPOQUE, with Jennifer Waelti-Walters (University of Nebraska Press, 1994). His essays have appeared in several journals, including AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW AND FRENCH HISTORICAL STUDIES.

William S. Maltby is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where he continues to teach on a regular basis. Among his publications are: THE BLACK LEGEND IN ENGLAND: THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTI-SPANISH SENTIMENT, 1558¿1660 (Duke University Press, 1971); ALBA: A BIOGRAPHY OF FERNANDO ALVAREZ DE TOLEDO, THIRD DUKE OF ALBA, 1507¿1582 (University of California Press, 1983); and articles on various aspects of Early Modern European history. From 1977 to 1997 he also served as Executive Director of the Center for Reformation Research and as editor of several volumes and series of volumes on the history of the Reformation.

One of the More Interesting Books on Sociology

It's not often that a college textbook can coerce some excitement from the student - but in the case of this book, I was excited by the preface! Landis clearly knows his subject well enough to dispense with telling us he knows his subject -written without stuffiness and seeming to come from the heart of someone who has both attended school and also actually remembers what it was like to be there. The information is CLEARLY presented without repetition and actually has some very fun sections that tease us and make us want to know more... read this book!

Using this book for sociology helps tremendously. It defines difficult vocabulary words necessary for studing sociology and gives specific examples to explain certain concepts. The readings placed at the end of the chapters are also an interesting way of relating sociological concepts to everyday life.

About the Author
Paul Chance received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Utah State University. He started his career as a school teacher (grades 7-9), and has been an Adjunct Instructor at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and at Salisbury University (Maryland.). Formerly he was Book Review Editor of "Psychology Today" magazine, a Senior Fellow of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, and a member of the Association for Science in Autism Treatment advisory board.

great textbook for learning and behavior

i felt this text was really well written and talks about learning and behavior in an easy to understand format. in fact i think they took how people learn into account when they were writing it, because it is so readable and makes the concepts easy to remember and relate to. i read it in its entirety even though it wasn't required for a class or anything. frankly i remember a few classes i had on behavior and learning that i wish i HAD read it for when i was going to school!

Good life knowledge

Pros: amazing knowledge. Covers tons of learning theory and summarizes countless experiments in learning psychology over the last two hundred years. Plenty of applications to real-life situations that can improve us and our interactions with others.

Cons: Occasionally lacks scientific soundness. Some of the conclusions derived are from samples that are far too small (case studies, anecdotal evidence from multiple people, samples of only 4-5 people for example), and should not be a base for further conjecture. Others are poor comparisons, e.g. one study in 1974 of 10 students showed x, but a 1978 study of 12 students showed little or no x. The author therefore says "evidence is mixed". In reality, the author should be looking at a far greater accumulation of evidence and have a more sound understanding of statistics.

Overall: Excellent, excellent book. Just be on the lookout for maybe the 10% of the evidence that is not derived well enough.

About the Author
Mary Warner Marien teaches at Syracuse University where she worked closely with William Fleming on the previous edition of ARTS and IDEAS. She is the author of numerous articles, book reviews, and essays on these and other subjects. Her book, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ITS CRITICS: A CULTURAL HISTORY was named one of the two best books in photographic history for 1997. She recently completed PHOTOGRAPHY: A CULTURAL HISTORY (2002), a new survey of the history of photography, with special emphasis on contemporary global practice. Her current research project is an investigation of the women's movement in the late twentieth-century and its relationship to feminist art and art theory.

William Fleming became an associate professor of Fine Arts at Syracuse University in 1945. Feeling that the Humanities program at SU did not sufficiently serve the needs of a growing Fine Arts program, Fleming founded the Department of Fine Arts in 1947 and became its first chairman. He held this position until 1969. It was during this time that William Fleming authored ARTS and IDEAS. First published in 1955, this work served as the synthesis of music and art that Fleming had been so desperately seeking. In 1970, Fleming was named Centennial Professor of Fine Arts, for his outstanding leadership and contributions to his field. Upon his retirement from Syracuse University in 1975, he was named Centennial Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts.

Great Tool for Reference

I used this textbook for a class two years ago and I have found myself referencing it often since taking the class, I even used it to study for a humanities CLEP exam. It has good photographs of the artwork and it is well written and interesting. The CD also had interesting material, especially the portions about architecture.

Textbook for my Humanities class

I have taken Humanities I and II this past fall and spring semester and this was the textbook required. The professor did follow the book closely chapter by chapter and I found it better than most textbooks. The pictures are abundant and helpful and though there is a cd included I never used it.

It must seem weird to some that I read my entire textbook, and there are more reviews from more textbooks to come. This one is definitely the least boring and dry. I enjoyed the complete journey through history from the Sumer to the Millennium.

About the Author
Mark L. Knapp is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus and a Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He was the editor of Human Communication Research (1980-83); an Eastern Communication Association Scholar (1982-83); an ICA Fellow (1980); and an NCA Distinguished Scholar. The Mark L. Knapp Award for career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication is awarded annually by the National Communication Association. He received teaching awards from two professional associations and four different universities. He was the President of ICA (1975-76); NCA (1989-90); the Association for Communication Administrators (1996-97); and the University of Texas chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (2001-03). He chaired the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas from 1989-1996 and 2000-2001. Four of his books are: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IN HUMAN INTERACTION; INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS; LYING AND DECEPTION IN HUMAN INTERACTION and THE HANDBOOK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION.

Judith A. Hall is University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern University. She has published widely on topics in nonverbal communication, especially accuracy in perceiving nonverbal cues. She has been Editor of the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior and is currently one of its Associate Editors. She is author of NONVERBAL SEX DIFFERENCES: COMMUNICATION ACCURACY AND EXPRESSIVE STYLE, co-editor of INTERPERSONAL SENSITIVITY: THEORY AND MANAGEMENT with Frank J. Bernieri, and co-editor of the HANDBOOK OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION with Mark L. Knapp.

Great Resource for Researchers

This is a terrific compilation of research into nonverbal communication. It is a thoroughly sourced review of writings on nonverbal topics, tending toward a psychological, academic tone.

Note: If you are seeking original research, Knapp's and Hall's book would be a good reference aid. However, in this work they are content to primarily synthesize the work of others. That said, they do a marvelous job of collecting and reporting on a wealth of valuable insights.

Great information, uninspiring presentation

I can't argue with the reviewers who point out that Knapp and Hall are two very distinguished scholars who know their stuff. I also can't argue with the fact that this book is very thorough, jam-packed with fascinating information, and one of the most useful guides you can get about the many different aspects of nonverbal human communication. What I will say is that this book is painfully DULL. The authors try to liven things up by adding a humorous story or a joke on occasion, but the feel of the book remains like a textbook in the worst possible sense. It's faceless, lifeless, and hard to finish. It's a crime that such fascinating information has to be delivered in such a dry, tiresome style. Get this book if you're interested in nonverbal, but also keep a cup of coffee handy.

this book is an excellent source for information on nonverbal communication. it presents some ideas in a way that I have never heard them discussed before. this book is a little difficult to read through if you are not interested in the subject, but the quality of the information is wonderful.

About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. In the past 40 years Jerry and Marianne Corey have conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland.

Marianne Schneider Corey, a licensed marriage and family therapist in California, is a National Certified Counselor and a fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She has been actively involved in providing training and supervision workshops in group process for human-services students and professionals. She also facilitates self-exploration groups for graduate students and continues to conduct training workshops in group counseling with her husband, Dr. Gerald Corey, in various countries. In 2001, the two received the Eminent Career Award for distinguished and major contributions to the field of group work by the Association for Specialists in Group Work.

Robert Haynes is a licensed clinical psychologist and producer of psychology video programs for Borderline Productions. Haynes received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Fuller Graduate School of Psychology and is a member of the APA, ACA, and ACES. He has been actively involved in professional psychology through clinical practice, as well as teaching, consulting, leading workshops, and writing on a variety of topics. Haynes recently retired after 25 years as training director of the accredited clinical psychology internship program at Atascadero State Hospital in California. He has co-authored multimedia projects with the Coreys including the EVOLUTION OF A GROUP: STUDENT VIDEO AND WORKBOOK and STUDENT VIDEO AND WORKBOOK FOR THE ART OF INTEGRATIVE COUNSELING, and the ETHICS IN ACTION CD-ROM.

There is no need to buy this CD-ROM if you are a Liberty student...

All the videos are provided through Blackboard. I bought this set and returned it two weeks later. I'm just glad I hadn't opened it.

Poor Technology, No Support

This CD was required for a class. It is pricey and just doesn't work. For Mac users, it runs only in the classic operating system. This is not available on newer Macs. I was able to get the disk to run on an older machine, but it will not save my data and it runs VERY slowly. Tech support has not responded 3 weeks after my request. I have heard some classmates with PCs who are having problems also.

Apart from the technical problems, I feel it's pricey for what you get. There are 12 video role plays. I've been through 4. They are very short. Your are then to answer questions. It's not worth it!

Don't waste your money if you are a Liberty University student

I just finished COUN 501 and this CD was listed as required material for the course. The only problem is that we were never required to watch the CD. All of the presentations used for the class are on Blackboard. So, of course, now Amazon will not give me a full refund because it is beyond the 30 day return window. I will receive a partial refund though so that is the price I pay for buying it thinking I needed it for class. I will be contacting Liberty University to complain about being misled.

John M. Murrin studies American colonial and revolutionary history and the early republic. His own essays cover topics ranging from ethnic tensions, the early history of trial by jury, the emergence of the legal profession, the Salem witch trials, and the political culture of the colonies and the new nation to the rise of professional baseball and college football in the nineteenth century. He served as president of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic in 1998?1999.

A specialist in early national social history, Paul E. Gary Gerstle is the Paul Mellon Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge. His books include WORKING-CLASS AMERICANISM: THE POLITICS OF LABOR IN A TEXTILE CITY, 1914-1960 (1989); AMERICAN CRUCIBLE: RACE AND NATION IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (2001), winner of the Saloutos Prize for the best work in immigration and ethnic history; THE RISE AND FALL OF THE NEW DEAL ORDER, 1930-1980 (1989); and RULING AMERICA: WEALTH AND POWER IN A DEMOCRACY (2005). A new book on the principles underlying the use of public power in America from the Revolution to the present will soon be published by Princeton University Press. He has served on the board of editors of the Journal of American History and the American Historical Review. His honors include a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, the Harmsworth Visiting Professorship of American History at the University of Oxford, and membership in the Society of American Historians.

Emily Rosenberg specializes in U.S. foreign relations in the twentieth century and is the author of SPREADING THE AMERICAN DREAM: AMERICAN ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL EXPANSION, 1890-1945 (1982); FINANCIAL MISSIONARIES TO THE WORLD: THE POLITICS AND CULTURE OF DOLLAR DIPLOMACY (1999), which won the Ferrell Book Award; A DATE WHICH WILL LIVE: PEARL HARBOR IN AMERICAN MEMORY (2004); and TRANSNATIONAL CURRENTS IN A SHRINKING WORLD, 1870-1945 (2014). Her other publications include (with Norman L. Rosenberg) IN OUR TIMES: AMERICA SINCE 1945, Seventh Edition (2003), and numerous articles dealing with foreign relations in the context of international finance, American culture, and gender ideology. She has served on the board of the Organization of American Historians, on the board of editors of the American Historical Review, and as president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.

$95 for a paperback book is highway roberry.

Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.

This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.
