About the Author
Grafton H. Hull, Jr. (BS, MSW, PhD) has taught at Fort Knox Community College, Morningside College, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Missouri State University, Indiana University Northwest, and, most recently, the University of Utah. He has been a faculty member, department chair, program director, director of a school of social work, and Special Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Accreditation. Among other professional activities, he has served on the CSWE Board of Directors, Commission on Accreditation, Nominations Committee, and as a President of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD). Dr. Hull has been a consultant to over 50 social work programs in the U.S. and Canada and a member of the editorial board or consulting editor for several journals. He is the co-author of seven texts and numerous articles in social work journals. Hull's honors include the Mary Shields McPhee Memorial Award for Faculty Excellence in Research (Utah), Significant Lifetime Achievement Award (BPD), Social Work Educator of the Year (Wisconsin CSWE), and President's Medal of Honor (BPD). His biography is listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA and WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD.

Jannah Mather is Dean of the University of Utah College of Social Work and the co-author of CHILD WELFARE: A UNIFYING MODEL OF PRACTICE. She has over 20 years of experience in private practice, in-patient therapy, and family services. Her writings include works on case management, family therapy, child welfare, family and children services, social work education, and accreditation.

small book but crammed with info

at first I was very angry at the size of this book. It's magazine-esque and not as tall or wide. However it reads like a dream, which is an invaluable feature for a textbook. Clear, precise without being verbose, and plenty of application to scenarios. I'm keeping this book after my class.

About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to The Social History of Reformation, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies, and Utopian Studies. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2013). He is also the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Textbook Required For History Class, Not That Bad Of A History Textbook (-:

Bought this textbook for A LOT CHEAPER than at my school's co-op bookstore! The textbook came in decent shape for the price. There was some highlighting in it but I found it useful for studying.

The textbook can be a little dull to read, so with my history class I would Google AP Euro and the certain subject or definition, and that helped with understanding the material in the textbook AND saved me time from reading the whole section or chapter. The textbook is a great book for history nerds lol. The textbook really just explains what happened and why it happened. It tries to make you understand what happened and that history repeats itself.

Western Civ 101

Great history textbook. I am taking Western Civ 101 online, with numerous essay questions due each week. The book makes the class a breeze. The way it is written is very easy to understand and follow. It's set up very nicely for use with my assignments: every section is headlined with the topic and important points are bolded, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for without having to look back to the index.

Overall it is a very interesting book. Ancient history is not everyone's cup of tea, but after having this book for a few weeks I am seeing how fascinating it really is. The book is so easy to read that even if I didn't have to take this class I would still want to read it.

Have found that Amazon has the best price on text books, new or used, far lower than the local College book store. They arrive with in the week and are in good shape. Returning them is easy too with the reminders from Amazon at end of semester and on line return labels, just try and remember to keep the box they came in.

One caution though, it you are needing a study guide or on line materials that come with new books and have an access codes to use those materials, be advised that once the access code is used once (with the new text book) it can not be used again with the then used text book. Amazon was not real clear on this when we started ordering used text books, best to also order and pay for a new user guide & access code if you will need it with the used text book. Need also to consider ordering new text book with usable access code depending on what may be least expensive.

This rather expensive book, although relatively old per its publication date of 2006, was used for a University of Maryland course on Death and Dying (i.e. Death Education). The book was utilized throughout the entirety of the course, for topics ranging from how individuals experience and cope with death (such as the five stages of grief) to the medical, legal, and business-related issues associated with death. A very comprehensive guide/source on all aspects of the process of dying and death itself, Understanding Dying, Death, and Bereavement analyzes quite a bit of research and current social theories while also providing firsthand accounts/stories throughout each section/chapter, such as the effect on children of experiencing death versus an adult’s experience. If you can find a used version of this book, solely for price/cost consideration, this book will serve you well in your studies.

About the Author
Walter Wager is a full professor in the Educational Psychology and Learning Systems Department of Florida State University. He teaches advanced instructional design courses, and courses in the design of computer-based instruction and electronic performance systems. He is also the Coordinator of Instructional Services in the Office for Distance and Distributed Learning. In this role, he works with faculty to help them improve their teaching and to integrate technology into their instruction. Professor Wager has won excellence in teaching awards and the University President's Technology Award for outstanding use of technology in instruction. He is the author of many journal articles and book chapters.

Dr. Katharine C. Golas is Vice President of the Training, Simulation and Performance Improvement Division at Southwest Research Institute. She specializes in the design and development of training technologies for the federal government. Dr. Golas is currently directing the development of instructional technologies aimed at integrating intelligent tutors, geographically dispersed subject matter experts, learning management systems, and a diverse array of support tools to develop responsive, high quality 'learner centered' systems. Dr. Golas is the author of over 100 publications, technical reports, and presentations. She has a PhD. in Instructional Systems from Florida State University.

John M. Keller holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Design and Organizational Behavior from Indiana University. He is currently a Professor of Instructional Systems and Educational Psychology at Florida State University. Dr. Keller has extensive experience working with corporate, governmental, and educational organizations in the United States and abroad. He has made major contributions to the development of approaches to designing motivational systems and he has contributed to the design of performance improvement and systematic training design processes for several major corporations and governmental agencies. He is best known for the motivational design process he created called the 'ARCS model.'

Important work

Because Robert Gagne was referenced so often in the text book I am using I felt it necessary to understand his principles of instructional design. The purchase of this book was definitely worth the money.

This book was for a graduate course I took on instructional design. It was an incredibly boring read. I thought the information seemed out-dated as compared to other materials I have read for other courses. I wouldn't buy it just for myself.

Jay M. Shafritz is professor emeritus of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is the author, co-author, or editor of more than 40 textbooks and reference books on business and public administration. He holds a doctorate from Temple University and an MPA from the Baruch College of the City University of New York.

Lee S. Weinberg is an attorney and Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author or co-author, or editor of four books and over a hundred articles in newspapers, magazines, and journals. He holds a doctorate in political science and a J.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

About the Author
Ronald Lippi is a South American archaeologist. Although he has some archaeological experience in Wisconsin and Illinois, he has dedicated most of his career to projects in Ecuador. He received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Minnesota, then turned to Anthropology and received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is professor of Anthropology at the Marathon County campus of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, as well as chair of the 13-campus Department of Anthropology and Sociology that is spread around the state.

an impressive achievement!

Ronald Lippi's new book, Tropical Forest Archaeology in Western Pichincha, Ecuador, is a fascinating account of over twenty years of archaeological research in northern Ecuador. Well written with colorful and interesting anecdotes, Lippi provides an excellent overview of the perils of doing archaeology in a mountainous jungle region of South America. This is an excellent introductory text for archaeology students, providing them with the flavor of actual fieldwork in a very remote and isolated part of the world.
Lippi's account is much more than a textbook, however. He has devoted much of his professional life to the single-handed recovery of a forgotten Native American civilization-- that of the Yumbos and Niguas. This book provides an invaluable summary of his work that will be of great benefit to scholars of ancient South America. Tropical Forest Archaeology in Western Pichincha is a highly recommended contribution to South American archaeology and pre-history.

About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services at California State University at Fullerton; a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; a National Certified Counselor; a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Counseling Psychology); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Dr. Corey taught undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling, as well as courses in experiential groups, the theory and practice of counseling, and ethics in counseling. He is the author or co-author of 15 counseling textbooks currently in print and numerous journal articles. Along with his wife, Marianne Schneider Corey, Dr. Corey has conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland. The two received the Association for Specialists in Group Work's Eminent Career Award in 2001. Dr. Corey earned his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California.

Marianne Schneider Corey is a licensed marriage and family therapist in California and is a National Certified Counselor. She received her master's degree in marriage, family, and child counseling from Chapman College. She is a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work and was the recipient of this organization's Eminent Career Award in 2001. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011. She also holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, and the American Mental Health Counselors Association. She is the co-author of several counseling textbooks, and has made educational DVD programs on various aspects of counseling practice. Marianne has been involved in leading groups for different populations, providing training and supervision workshops in group process, facilitating self-exploration groups for graduate students in counseling, and co-facilitating training groups for group counselors and weeklong residential workshops in personal growth. With her husband, Jerry Corey, she has given many presentations at professional conferences and has conducted training workshops, continuing education seminars, and personal growth groups in the United States, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, and Korea.

Interactive text book, haven't really seen that before. It seems really personal experience related. I enjoyed reading it, it wasn't "hard to follow" like some text books. used for interpersonal relationships undergrad class

This is a great book for someone trying to "find" themselves. It helps you reach inside of yourself to find the answers for questions that you have, but you don't want to ask anyone else because you're embarassed. It'll be a great book to read after five years and see how you have changed and grown. I'd suggest keeping a notebook to record your responses to the questions asked in the book and compare the answers after re-reading it a couple years later.

Needed this book for one of my classes - It was very helpful and helped me get through the class - It is a lot of reading though, so prepare yourself. However in int end you walk away with more knowledge than you did in the beginning so that is always good :)
