About the Author
Todd R. Clear is the Provost at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. He is currently involved in studies of religion and crime, the criminological implications of "place," and the concept of "community justice." He serves as founding editor of the journal Criminology and Public Policy. Previous writing covers the topics of correctional classification, prediction methods in correctional programming, community-based correctional methods, intermediate sanctions, and sentencing policy. Clear has been elected to national office in the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He has served as a programming and policy consultant to public agencies in over 40 states and five nations, and his work has been recognized through several awards, including those of the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, The Rockefeller School of Public Policy, the American Probation and Parole Association, and the International Community Corrections Association. Clear is the author of three books on community justice: COMMUNITY JUSTICE (Cengage Learning), WHAT IS COMMUNITY JUSTICE? (Sage), and THE COMMUNITY JUSTICE IDEAL (Westview). He is also author of IMPRISONING COMMUNITIES: HOW MASS INCARCERATION MAKES DISADVANTAGED PLACES WORSE (Oxford University Press).

George F. Cole is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Connecticut. He has been recognized for outstanding teaching and research and in 1995 was named a Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. A specialist in the administration of criminal justice, he has published extensively on such topics as prosecution, courts, and corrections. He developed and directed the graduate corrections program at the University of Connecticut and was a Fellow at the National Institute of Justice (1988). Among his other accomplishments, he has been granted two awards under the Fulbright-Hays Program to conduct criminal justice research in England and the former Yugoslavia. He is co-author of several other Cengage Learning/Wadsworth criminal justice titles, including CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA, Eighth Edition (with Christopher Smith and Christina DeJong); AMERICAN CORRECTIONS, Eleventh Edition (with Todd Clear and Michael Reisig); AMERICAN CORRECTIONS IN BRIEF, Third Edition (with Todd Clear, Michael Reisig, and Carolyn Petrosino); and THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: POLITICS AND POLICIES, Tenth Edition (with Marc Gertz).

Michael Reisig is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1996. Previously he was faculty member at Michigan State University and Florida State University. His corrections research has appeared in several leading criminology journals, including Criminology, Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly, and Punishment and Society.

Great corrections book

I've taught college-level corrections courses for quite a few years now and have kicked around a number of different corrections texts. This new edition is definitely an improvement over previous ones--it's much heavier on the recent empirical research, which helps me to keep my students "on track" with what the actual research indicates regarding a number of correctional topics.

I do have some students who may take issue with the authors' discussion on certain subjects (much like one of the reviewers here), yet much of their dissatisfaction is likely to arise out of their disappointment that the reality of corrections is different from their preconceived ideas of what corrections "should" be about (in general, such dissatisfaction is expressed by my younger, more close-minded, right-wing zealot students who have a long way to go before they're capable of thinking critically).

In short, it's a great corrections text. It might be a bit lengthy for a single course on a quarter system, but if you're teaching on a semester system it's great because you won't need to hoist a bunch of supplementary materials/books onto your students (this edition is more than enough to last you a full semester).

Review of American Corrections, 7th Edition

Clear, Cole, & Reisig present a thorough overview of classic and historical correctional philosophy that is strongly tied to their discussion of more contemporary issues. Each revision includes the most up to date, critically acclaimed research from top criminology journals. Additionally, they regularly cite the best government sources (such as the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Federal Bureau of Prisons) to support various claims. In sum, this is a fair and balanced approach to all of the important issues facing corrections. I have taught Corrections for many years, and would not consider using a book other than American Corrections.

About the Author
Lenore T. Szuchman, Ph.D., Florida International University, is a developmental psychologist and Professor Emerita of Psychology at Barry University, where she taught graduate and undergraduate courses on lifespan development as well as undergraduate research methods courses. She has supervised a wide range of master's theses and senior projects that have been published and presented at professional and student conferences regionally and nationally. She has been awarded funding for research from the National Institute on Aging and received the Barry University President's Award for Excellence in Research. She is the author and coauthor of articles on cognition and social cognition in older adults as well as on gender issues in various age groups. In addition to being the author of WRITING WITH STYLE: APA STYLE MADE EASY, she is co-editor of the book, PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON HUMAN SEXUALITY (John Wiley and Sons). She has been a member of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the Association for Psychological Science (APS), and the American Psychological Association (APA). She has also served as a Psychology Councilor for the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).

Dr. Barbara Thomlison is a professor in the School of Social Work and director of the Institute for Children and Families at Risk at Florida International University. She obtained her Ph.D. in social work from the University of Toronto. Her academic experiences involve various undergraduate and graduate programs, where she teaches advanced clinical practice and family intervention courses. Her research interests include parenting programs, children at risk of maltreatment, family and youth violence, foster care, and early childhood interventions. Dr. Thomlison's extensive publications include articles, chapters, and books in the areas of child maltreatment interventions, parenting for effectiveness, family assessment, risk and resilience, foster care, APA style, forensic assessment, intervention in child sexual abuse, evidence-based internships, and designing evidence-based intervention search strategies. She is actively involved as a board member in local and national child welfare, foster care, and family service organizations. Her lengthy interdisciplinary practice history also includes services to children and families, as well as policy services research.

Good guide but not worth the $27 I paid.

This information written in the Preface would have been helpfeul before I purchased this book. (Social workers should not expect this book to replace the Publication Manual. They should be aware that this is one of several reference books that belong on their desk when they write. Somtimes the transition from first-year English composition classes to social work classess leaves students confused because these first-year classes tend to be taught with emphasis on the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. In these courses students learn how to organize a coherent paragraph, how to develop a thesis statement, and how to write an essay or a library research paper in generic (MLA-based)style. This is a useful start, but it does not enhance students' technical writing skills when it comes to using APA gudelines. They must now learn to write using APA Style, which includes not only rules made excilict in the Publication Manual but also other conventions that constitute the unwritten rules of the APS style. For example, rather than write about what other authors "said" or "believed", they should concentrate on what the author "found or "reported". Also, the title of an article should not be mentioned in a literature review, and passive voice may sometimes be used.)

About the Author
Jerry V. Diller has been teaching for over 30 years at all levels of higher education. He has been on the faculty of at The Wright Institute, University of California at Berkeley, University of Oregon, and Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. He was awarded the "Innovation of the Year Award" for teaching at Lane Community College. In his private practice he has been a partner in Multicultural Associates, a consulting and training organization focusing on issues of cultural diversity and social justice.

Jean Moule is Assistant Professor of Early Childhood and Adult Education and the "Immersion" Program Coordinator at Oregon State University. Jean began her higher education journey with a major in Art and a minor in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. She received a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon and her doctorate from Oregon State University with a dissertation titled "My Journey with Preservice Teachers: Reflecting on Teacher Characteristics that Bridge Multicultural Education Theory and Classroom Practice."

Excellent resource for educators

I have assigned this book, or parts of it, in my courses at the university level. My students have found it to be clearly written and helpful in understanding the basic concepts of cultural competence. Although some people often take a defensive posture on these issues (see excellent article by Jean Olson called Detour-Spotting), most of my students are there to learn to be teachers, so, thankfully, they maintain an open mind. The book explains terms, gives examples, and synthesizes research. It is not as dense as some other texts on this topic, and is more cohesive than some of the excellent edited volumes available. For those reasons, it is a good introductory text.

Practical Book for Teachers!

I'm using this text as a required book for my multicultural education course. I'm enjoying it because it presents the material in a way that beginning students can understand, it provides practical frameworks such as the cultural iceberg, and it gives students ideas on how to deal with different issues in the classroom and in real life. For example, it introduces microaggressions (the kind of subtle racism that is more common today) and then gives them language to disrupt it in a non-confrontational manner. The text covers the most common cultural groups present in schools and how to be more culturally aware and self-aware as a teacher.

As in any multicultural education text, it may rub some whites the wrong way. This is inevitable, in my experience, and I work one on one with irritated students to explore those feelings, decide the meaning of them, and help them learn to be culturally competent white educators. I think there is a place for all of us at the table, and we each have valuable contributions in this area--that is why I work closely and sincerely with students who are frustrated by this topic in general.

Each chapter ends with practical tips for all grade levels (K-12). This has been a missing piece for me in multicultural education text, and that is one of the main reasons I chose this texts. We all benefit from immediate application.

About the Author
Margaret L. Andersen (B.A., Georgia State University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is the Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware, where she has also served in several senior administrative positions, including most recently as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Diversity. She holds secondary appointments in Black American Studies and Women and Gender Studies. She is the author of several books, including (among others) THINKING ABOUT WOMEN, recently published in its tenth edition; the best-selling anthology, RACE, CLASS, AND GENDER (co-edited with Patricia Hill Collins, now in its ninth edition); LIVING ART: THE LIFE OF PAUL R. JONES, AFRICAN AMERICAN ART COLLECTOR; and ON LAND AND ON SEA: A CENTURY OF WOMEN IN THE ROSENFELD COLLECTION. She is a member of the National Advisory Board for Stanford University's Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, the Past Vice President of the American Sociological Association, and Past President of the Eastern Sociological Society, from which she received the ESS Merit Award. She has also received two teaching awards from the University of Delaware and the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award.

Kim A. Logio is Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Saint Joseph's University, where she recently received a teaching award. She often teaches research methods and guides students through the completion of their undergraduate thesis projects. A member of the American Sociological Association and the Eastern Sociological Society, Dr. Logio has been interviewed for local television and National Public Radio for her work on body image and race, class, and gender differences in nutrition and weight control behavior. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Delaware and lives in Delaware County, Pa., with her husband and three children.

Howard F. Taylor has taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and Princeton University, where he is presently Professor of Sociology and former director of the African American Studies Center. He has published over fifty articles in sociology, education, social psychology, and race relations. His books include THE IQ GAME (Rutgers University Press), a critique of hereditarian accounts of intelligence; BALANCE IN SMALL GROUPS (Van Nostrand Reinhold), translated into Japanese; and the forthcoming RACE AND CLASS AND THE BELL CURVE IN AMERICA. He has appeared widely before college, radio, and TV audiences, including ABC's Nightline. Past president of the Eastern Sociological Society, Dr. Taylor is a member of the American Sociological Association and the Sociological Research Association, an honorary society for distinguished research. He is a winner of the DuBois-Johnson-Frazier Award, given by the American Sociological Association for distinguished research in race and ethnic relations, and the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University. Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hiram College and has a Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University.

I love how this book saved me tons of money

I love how this book saved me tons of money. As a college student I already spend lots of money on text books and tuition. This book at my bookstore was 60 bucks and bought it for 3 cents. plus $4 of shpping. it was fast shipment and useful information. i ended up getting a 4,0 in this class because I actually read it. I totally would recommend this book especially to a college student because it was in perfect condition and affordable something that is really awesome

About the Author
Lawrence S. Cunningham is John A. O'Brien Professor of Theology (Emeritus) at the University of Notre Dame. The author or editor of over 25 books and hundreds of essays and reviews, his books reflect his interest in the history of Christian spirituality, hagiography, the intersection of theology and culture, as well as the relationship of contemplation and action. Cunningham is the recipient of three honorary doctorates and the winner of Notre Dame's Presidential Award for service to academy and church (2002) and the Christus Magister award from the University of Portland in 2011 for distinguished scholarship and teaching. He has served as a visiting lecturer in this country and in Europe, Asia, and South Africa. His most recent academic book is INTRODUCTION TO CATHOLICISM (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and is currently serving as the Christianity editor for the forthcoming NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD RELIGIONS.

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. Reich lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

I received that book and noticed that there is permanent black marker on all art that showed nudity. I'm ver frustrated because my teacher put art in my exams. How can I learn the art of I can't see it?

This book was the required text for my Humanities class this semester; and may I say that it is a waste of money, time and effort. A more superficial text could not have been willfully created; and at $150.00 new/$80.00 used you are better off dropping the class if you can.

If you are interested in the culture and history of ancient civilizations read anything but this book.

A Hot Mess of Errors

I had the misfortune of teaching a humanities course in which this book had been assigned by the college. It has very pretty pictures, but heaven help you if you actually read the text. I spent a great deal of class time correcting the FACTUAL ERRORS that abound in this "text". In just the half page text that begins Chapter 15 on the Baroque world, there are more errors than I care to enumerate. e.g. Peasants did NOT wear "homespun fabric often mixing hemp and wool." If they mixed it was linen and wool. Their clothes were NOT "generally dyed black or some other dark color". They used the natural dyes available to them and preferred brighter tones. There are lichen that make lovely purples and lavenders. Generally, peasants did NOT go barefoot. England and France were NOT "the chief centers of power" in "the late 1500s; look to Spain, Poland, and the Holy Roman Empire for that. The errors and false generalities go on and on.

It is disturbing that a text book should fill every page with errors of fact and reasoning. But it is more disturbing that the text takes the time to get the facts wrong about matters that are of NO SIGNIFICANCE to the PURPOSE of the text. Most of the problems in this volume center around repeating opinions and ideas that may have been in vogue during Victorian era, but which have long since been disproved.

Apart from the pretty pictures, this book is not only useless, it is dangerously flawed.

About the Author
Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University, and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The 2004 recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University, Dr. Hoeger continues to research and lecture on exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. In addition to PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Dr. Hoeger has published several Cengage Learning texts, including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness (with Terry-Ann Spitzer Gibson). Dr. Hoeger is a former luge runner and Winter Olympian, and renowned fitness and wellness innovator. He developed many popular fitness assessment tools in use today, such as the modified sit and reach, total body rotation, shoulder rotation, muscular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and soda pop coordination tests.

Sharon A. Hoeger is Vice President of Fitness & Wellness, Inc. in Boise, Idaho and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. As co-author of PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, 10th Edition and four other Cengage texts, Ms. Hoeger is responsible for researching the most current scientific information for each revision, as well as developing the interactive software that accompanies all of the Hoeger fitness and wellness textbooks--innovations that have set the standard for fitness and wellness software today. Great resource book with a very few minor errors

This is a great book overall and is written by a couple who have been married for over 30 years and have been actively engaged in a healthy lifestyle all that time. I'm very much into health, though through more simple and alternative methods, but this gave me a basic working knowledge of the body and exercise which I found incredibly helpful. I found a handfull of things I would disagree with, mainly concering food and drink... such as the comment that caffinated beverages count towards your water intake... I would vehemently argue that as much proof exists to the contrary ... caffiene is also a diuretic. But I have a good underlying knowlege of food so I was able to just ignore the things I disagreed with. But the mechanics of the body and exercise were wonderful and its a good source of fact and also can be quite inspiring to read. I learned many things I didn't know, such as where you carry your fat makes a difference in your health. Knowing this was written by a couple who practice what they preach really made it even more meaningful.

About the Author
Roy F. Baumeister is currently the Eppes Eminent Scholar and Professor of Psychology at Florida State University. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Princeton in 1978 and did a postdoctoral fellowship in sociology at the University of California at Berkeley. He spent over two decades at Case Western Reserve University. He has also worked at the University of Texas, the University of Virginia, the Max-Planck-Institute, the VU Free University of Amsterdam, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Russell Sage Foundation, the University of Bamberg (Germany), and Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Baumeister's research spans multiple topics, including self and identity, self-regulation, interpersonal rejection and the need to belong, sexuality and gender, aggression, self-esteem, meaning, and self-presentation. He has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and from the Templeton Foundation. He has over 500 publications, and his 31 books include EVIL: INSIDE HUMAN VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY, THE CULTURAL ANIMAL, MEANINGS OF LIFE, and the New York Times bestseller WILLPOWER: REDISCOVERING THE GREATEST HUMAN STRENGTH. The Institute for Scientific Information lists him among the handful of most cited (most influential) psychologists in the world. He has received several major awards, including the William James Fellow award (their highest honor) from the Association for Psychological Science, and the Jack Block Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

Brad J. Bushman is a professor of communication and psychology at The Ohio State University, where he holds the Margaret Hall and Robert Randal Rinehart Chair of Mass Communication. He is also a professor of communication science at the VU University Amsterdam, the Netherlands in the summer. For about 30 years he has conducted research on the causes, consequences, and solutions to the problem of human aggression and violence. He co-chaired the National Science Foundation youth violence advisory committee that was formed in the wake of the Newtown school shooting. He also is a member of President Obama's committee on gun violence. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles. According to Google Scholar, his articles have been cited over 25,000 times. He is ranked #2 in citations among communication scholars. In 2013 he received the 2013 Ig Nobel Psychology Prize (signed by three Nobel Laureates) for research with French colleagues titled "'Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder': People who think they are drunk also think they are attractive." In 2014 he received the Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Media Psychology and Technology, American Psychological Association. His research has challenged several myths (e.g., violent media have a trivial effect on aggression, venting anger reduces aggression, violent people suffer from low self-esteem, violence and sex on TV sell products, warning labels reduce audience size). One colleague calls him the "myth buster." His research has been published in the top scientific journals (e.g., Science, PNAS), and has been featured extensively in the mass media (e.g., BBC, New York Times, NPR).
