About the Author
With a distinguished teaching and academic career, Craig R. Ducat has made an indelible contribution to the Constitutional Law arena. A professor at Northern Illinois University since receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, he was awarded the Presidential Teaching Professorship from 1995-1999; the Award for Excellence in Teaching, Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, 1998; and the Award for Excellence in Teaching, Phi Sigma Zeta in 2001. He was also recently granted the title Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus. Dr. Ducat is best known for writing the CONSTITUTIONAL INTERPRETATION casebooks.

About the Author
Dr. Dennis D. Long is a Professor and Chairperson of the Social Work Department at Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio). He teaches courses in macro practice, human behavior and the social environment, and research. Dr. Long received his B.A. from Ohio Northern University, a MSW from The Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. His research interests involve the importance of larger social systems in social work practice. Dr. Long has authored numerous articles in professional journals as well as co-authored another text published by Brooks/Cole, MACRO SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE: A STRENGTHS PERSPECTIVE. He is a site visitor for the Council on Social Work Education, and currently serves as a board member for both Oesterlen Services for Youth Inc. and the Butler County Mental Health Board.

Dr. Carolyn Tice is the Associate Dean and Program Chair at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and was appointed to her position July, 2002. Her prior appointment was chair of the Department of Social Work, Ohio University, a position she held for nine years. Dr. Tice teaches social welfare policy. She received her BSW from West Virginia University, a MSW from Temple University, and completed her DSW at the University of Pennsylvania where she worked with Hmong refugees. Throughout her career she has worked in the nation's Appalachian region. The author of three books, Dr. Tice's research focus has been on rural aspects of social work practice and the strengths perspective. She is a site visitor for the Council on Social Work Education and a member of the Program Committee for the Maryland Chapter of the National Association of Social Work.

John Morrison is currently Professor of Social work at Aurora University where he teaches courses in social policy, research, administration and community practice. He served as MSW Program Chair for over a decade. He served as Chair of the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration (ACOSA). He has been a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and continues to provide leadership to its International Network. He is a board member of several agencies in Chicago and has been a member of the Nominating Committee of the Council on Social Work Education. Dr. Morrison taught at the University of Pennsylvania and was Assistant Commissioner of the New York City Community Development Agency and Special Assistant to the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Social Services. He served as director of community centers in Brooklyn, N.Y. Current interests include prevention and development programs and international social work.

About the Author
James N. Olson received a Ph.D. in Psychology from UCLA in 1974. As one of the "founding faculty" of The University of Texas-Permian Basin, he has significant experience in the personalized system of instruction (also called mastery learning), and the cognitive and behavioral principles of learning. He was awarded the "Amoco Award" for excellence in teaching (this award evolved into today's "Chancellor's Council Outstanding Teaching Award"), which is given annually to one faculty member at each of The University of Texas' academic campuses. In 1990 he received the President's Award for Excellence in Research. Dr. Olson is the author of three books and numerous journal articles. He is presently Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Facinating Sociological Study

This book is the result of a fascinating study by Cromwell and Olson about what makes burglars tick. To conduct the study, the authors did not just look at statistics or talk to police. Instead, they interviewed actual active burglars in a medium sized Texas city. They asked the burglars how long they had been working, why they started, how they chose a target, what they stole, and how they stole it.

What they found was fascinating. The book gives information on who burglars are, what they steal, and how not to become a target.

Crime Prevention

As a law enforcement officer that deals with preventing crime, I enjoyed reading the book. It offered good insight into the process of how criminals "see" a house and what factors go into selecting a home to break into.

This is one of many sources of information that would be helpful if you were speaking to a community watch group.

I have been a Crime Analyst for a year and a half now, and I am constantly searching for material to help me improve. I am so glad that I found "Breaking and Entering". After reading it, I find myself digging deeper when analyzing ALL crime. I am now slower...but the quality of my work is better. I carry this book with me to work everyday. I think this should be required reading for all Crime Analyst.

About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to The Social History of Reformation, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies, and Utopian Studies. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2013). He is also the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Really nice book!

This book is really detail-oriented with vivid pictures and easy to follow writing. I am using this book right now for my History class. The questions at the end of the chapter reviews and the focus questions are really good at helping you stay focused on the "big picture" and challenging yourself to remember the material. This book is not the boring "history is just about learning the dates" kind of teaching. The author actually reaches into the era, and explains what was really going on. I definitely recommend this book, even for "History class haters."

Textbook Required For History Class, Not That Bad Of A History Textbook (-:

Bought this textbook for A LOT CHEAPER than at my school's co-op bookstore! The textbook came in decent shape for the price. There was some highlighting in it but I found it useful for studying.

The textbook can be a little dull to read, so with my history class I would Google AP Euro and the certain subject or definition, and that helped with understanding the material in the textbook AND saved me time from reading the whole section or chapter. The textbook is a great book for history nerds lol. The textbook really just explains what happened and why it happened. It tries to make you understand what happened and that history repeats itself.

Great history textbook. I am taking Western Civ 101 online, with numerous essay questions due each week. The book makes the class a breeze. The way it is written is very easy to understand and follow. It's set up very nicely for use with my assignments: every section is headlined with the topic and important points are bolded, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for without having to look back to the index.

Overall it is a very interesting book. Ancient history is not everyone's cup of tea, but after having this book for a few weeks I am seeing how fascinating it really is. The book is so easy to read that even if I didn't have to take this class I would still want to read it.

Have found that Amazon has the best price on text books, new or used, far lower than the local College book store. They arrive with in the week and are in good shape. Returning them is easy too with the reminders from Amazon at end of semester and on line return labels, just try and remember to keep the box they came in.

One caution though, it you are needing a study guide or on line materials that come with new books and have an access codes to use those materials, be advised that once the access code is used once (with the new text book) it can not be used again with the then used text book. Amazon was not real clear on this when we started ordering used text books, best to also order and pay for a new user guide & access code if you will need it with the used text book. Need also to consider ordering new text book with usable access code depending on what may be least expensive.

Denhardt's "Theories of Public Organizations" is a concise overview of public administration theories that have had contributed to the substantive mosaic of the field of public administration. Along a continuum ranging from the early contributors to the contemporary accounts in public administration, including scholars of different epistemological persuasions, Denhardt introduces the readers with mouthwatering fecundity of public administration theory/theories.
Denhardt organizes the book around eight major chapters. In the first chapter, the author persuades the reader of the close connection between theory and practice and argues that theory is derived from practice, therefore, how we acquire knowledge in practice and make sense of what is happening around us is important in theory building in that the way we learn helps us to come up with theories that explain what happened and why happened. In the second chapter, Denhardt discusses the intellectual heritage of Marx, Weber, and, Freud, all of whom concluded that complex organizations have important influences on the development of human faculties, for this reason, Denhardt argues that public administration scholars need focus on human issues when spending intellectual energy on public organizations. In chapter 3, the beginning of public administration theory is discussed with special emphasis to "efficiency" as the primary criterion of success (I strongly recommend Deborah Stone's Policy Paradox!). Chapter 4 discusses the rational model of organization. Chapter 5 is about organizational humanism and New Public Administration. In the sixth chapter, Denhardt talks about the New Public Management movement. In Chapter 7, New Public Service is recounted. The eighth chapter is a summary that emphasizes the intimate connection between theory and practice.
Beginning with targeted quotations from Marx, Freud, and Weber, Denhardt argues that large-scale organizations have significant influence on the lives of human beings, because of which one needs to go beyond a simple-minded view that organization theory is about how to increase productivity, a question that addresses only instrumentally-rational managerial techniques, without any palpable regard to personal learning and growth of individuals that populate complex organizations. Drawing from a broad range of public administration literature and epistemological movements that include interpretive/action theory, critical theory, and postmodernism, Denhardt comes up with a viewpoint that public administration scholars should contribute to a theory of public organization that makes a significant emphasis on personal learning, human values and action, and change in public organizations in pursuit of publicly defined societal goals.
Although the book is a generic one that gives a copious account of contributions to public administration theory, Denhardt accomplishes getting the core of his message across: there is (and should be) an intimate connection between theory building and learning, a point of view that leads Denhardt to conclude that students of public administration should endeavor to understand how individuals acquire knowledge in organizations and make sense of what is happening around them-different ways of acquiring knowledge lead to different learning processes and outputs. This proposition implies that researchers, too, should look back in order to interpret actions (intentions and behavior) of individuals and groups in organizations. As much audacious as it is, this proposition runs in manifest contrast to the positivist myth that scientific research should stay away from such post factum interpretations that adulterate the theoretical precision of scientific knowledge.
There are many interesting propositions in the book, which are difficult to be summarized here. There are a few shortcomings. The chapter on New Public Service could have been a bit more comprehensive. Critical and interpretive theories could have been linked more to public administration (for those interested in these theories, I recommend Richard Bernstein's The Restructuring of Social and Political Theory).
Overall, I highly recommend this book to students of public administration.

I especially like the way that topics in 'Traditional' introductory psychology textbooks (e.g. social/personality/developmental/clinical) are presented with different information and different studies than I have seen before."

About the Author
William Compton earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Vanderbilt University. Currently a Professor of Psychology at Middle Tennessee State University, he has taught a wide variety of classes including Introductory Psychology, Psychology of Adjustment, Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Counseling, Psychology of Happiness, and Introduction to Clinical Psychology. His research interests include health psychology, personality, and social psychology.

Perfect Textbook for an Introduction to Positive Psychology

This is the textbook I used to teach an introductory course in positive psychology/positive organizational behavior. It is clear, comprehensive, and to the point. It is perfect for undergraduates, but provides enough information to satisfy graduate students. One of its major strengths is that it sticks to a scientific approach to positive psychology. It avoids mixing eastern mysticism into the discussion in contrast to some of the other positive psychology textbooks. I hope a second edition is published soon.

AN INTRODUCTION TO GREATER WELL-BEING

Positive Psychology is defined as the scientific study of optimal human functioning. I would define it as the study and understanding of our overall well-being.

Because traditional psychology has been concerned with assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental illness, there's a lot that still needs to be studied; and thus understood, about what contributes to, or constitutes well-being.

Although this book is labeled as an "introduction," it is replete with fascinating information on what we should know - and do - to achieve optimal human functioning in every area of our lives.

As a career specialist, the chapter on "Work, Community, Culture, and Well-being," were of particualar interest to me, and I've already studied I/O Psychology. This book takes the key finding of other disciplines of psychology and places them in the context of our overall well-being, from a more holistic perspective that's instantly accessible. For example, this book delves much deeper into the elements of job satisfaction, such as the characteristics of the job itself, in relation to one's strongest personality aspects, as well as the environment in which one works. I/O only scratches the surface.

The chapter on "Positive Mental Health: Thriving and Flourishing" should resonate with everyone. It will help you do deeper introspection, and lay the foundation for greater personal growth. I love how it incorporates the topic of wisdom, and the "transcendent" self - which is what everyone aspires to become...but only a minority achieve.

I'm glad that I completed my psychology studies with positive psychology, and with this book specifically. William C. Compton did an excellent job of creating a robust and vibrant primer that fully prepares you for more comprehensive study of positive psychology as an entree, or completely satsifies as an appetizer.

A fabulous introduction to SAS essentials

If you are in need of data management or analysis, SAS is likely big on your list. This book gives extremely clear and useful introductions to how SAS is structured, how to manipulate and organize data, and some basic statistical procedures (descriptive statistics, ANOVA, OLS models, etc.) are also presented.
Official SAS manuals are usually bulky, complicated, and difficult to understand, particularly if you have little/no experience with SAS. This book can take a complete beginner through data set creation and manipulation into substantially more complex and important procedures and functions. As this is an introduction to the SAS system, the more advanced functions in SAS, such as SAS STAT, are not covered in any detail. However, in order to understand how to actually use SAS and manipulate data so as to employ these higher level procedures, this book is excellent.
This is the absolute best introduction on how to use the SAS system I have seen, but it has lots of useful information for people with some basic SAS knowledge as well. It is presented in the style of a textbook,with each section concluding with problems (with answers provided) that the aspiring SAS programmer can solve.
If you are just starting to look into SAS, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. 'If I was able to do it, anyone can.'

Good for beginners

This is the best introductory SAS book I have seen. It introduces the basic SAS structure and programming statements. A good and detailed explanation is provided for DATA step vs. PROC, a topic that always proves to be difficult to grasp for SAS newbies.
The book starts with SAS terminology and logic, i.e., how SAS works its magic. It moves on to simple tasks such as reading in data, summarizing it, and displaying it. Then there are chapters on SAS programming elements (expressions, logic flows, etc.) as well as intermediate-advanced statements. The MERGE statement is explained very clearly.
Examples abound, although I feel that they are presented in a very confusing format -- often you can't tell if a block of text belongs to the main text or an example. The organization of the book is also a little confusing, esp. if you want to use it as a reference book (not recommended; stick with SAS manual set instead).
In short, this book provides an excellent ovewview of SAS. Read the chapters in sequence and you'll soon be on your way to happy SAS'ing!

not bad for us amateurs

I was a SAS tyro when I purchased this book. I had taken the 4 day SAS for programmers course, and I was practically helpless. After I had worked the examples in this book, I was actually able to do useful work in SAS. The book continued to be a useful reference on elementary "how to" issues for the next year. The data disk provides innumerable worked examples of the sort that arise in day-to-day SAS work. I am grateful to the authors for making my entry into this business less painful than I had feared. The title is right on target. It is an introduction. Very soon, my SAS problems were past its purview.

About the Author
John Peterman received his Ph.D. in 1980 from The Pennsylvania State University. He is interested in ancient Greek philosophy (particularly Plato) and American pragmatism (particularly Dewey). He teaches courses in Ancient Philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, Environmental Ethics, and Life Science Ethics. He coordinates the Humanities Honors Program. He is an avid hiker and has successfully completed the New York City Marathon three times (best time: 4:15). Recent publications include ON PLATO (Thomson Wadsworth, 2000).

Outstanding introductory text

As with Prof. Peterman's book on Plato, this text does a first rate job of introducing Greek philosophy in a succinct manner. It situates the thinkers in their historical milieu.
