About the Author
Robert Jurmain received an A.B. in Anthropology from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from Harvard. He taught at San Jose State University from 1975 to 2004 and is now Professor Emeritus. During his teaching career, he taught courses in all major branches of physical anthropology, including osteology and human evolution, with the greatest concentration in general education teaching for introductory students. His research interests are skeletal biology of humans and non-human primates, paleopathology, and paleoanthropology. In addition to his three textbooks, which together have appeared in 30 editions, he is the author of STORIES FROM THE SKELETON: BEHAVIORAL RECONSTRUCTION IN HUMAN OSTEOLOGY (1999, Gordon Breach Publishers), as well as numerous articles in research journals.

Lynn Kilgore earned her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she now holds an affiliate faculty position. Her primary research interests are osteology and paleopathology. She has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in human osteology, primate behavior, human heredity and evolution, and general physical anthropology. Her research focuses on developmental defects as well as on disease and trauma in human and great ape skeletons.

Wenda Trevathan is Regents Professor (Emerita) of Anthropology at New Mexico State University, where she taught from 1983 to 2009. She is a biological anthropologist whose research focuses on the evolutionary and biocultural factors underlying human reproduction, including childbirth, maternal behavior, sexuality, and menopause. Her primary publications include works on the evolution of childbirth and evolutionary medicine. Her most recent book is ANCIENT BODIES, MODERN LIVES: HOW EVOLUTION HAS SHAPED WOMEN'S HEALTH (2010, Oxford University Press). She has taught courses in physical anthropology, nutritional anthropology, medical anthropology, evolutionary medicine, and anthropology of reproduction.

Harry Nelson received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Nelson originally studied cultural anthropology, and broadened his teaching and research interests to include both cultural and physical anthropology. Dr. Nelson pursued his interest in physical anthropology when he teamed with colleague Dr. Robert Jurmain to develop a new text. The resulting first edition of INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY appeared in 1979, and has regularly been revised and updated since that time. Dr. Nelson taught at Foothill College, CA., until his retirement. In December 2000, following a long illness, Dr. Nelson passed away.

Great introductory book

I bought this book for a lower-division anthropology class, and found it one of the few books used for college that i actually enjoyed reading. The writing is clear and straightforward, and the book has many maps, pictures, tables, and diagrams for understanding major points and for visual stimulation. Besides the evolution of modern humans from primate ancestors, the book also provides an introduction to genetics, primate behavior, important archaeological finds, human variation and adaptations, and more. I'm not an anthropologist so I can't attest to the accuracy of the book, but as a biology student I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it. Minus one star because for the price it should go into a bit more detail.

About the Author
Serena Nanda is professor emeritus of anthropology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Her most recent book is THE GIFT OF THE BRIDE: A TALE OF ANTHROPOLOGY, MATRIMONY, AND MURDER, a novel set in an Indian immigrant community in New York City. Her other published works include NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN: THE HIJRAS OF INDIA, winner of the 1990 Ruth Benedict Prize; AMERICAN CULTURAL PLURALISM AND LAW; GENDER DIVERSITY: CROSS-CULTURAL VARIATIONS; and a New York City guidebook, NEW YORK MORE THAN EVER: 40 PERFECT DAYS IN AND AROUND THE CITY. She has always been captivated by the stories people tell and by the tapestry of human diversity. Anthropology was the perfect way for her to immerse herself in these passions, and through teaching, to spread the word about the importance of understanding both human differences and human similarities.

Great price over newer editions.

Covers most of what the 1up newer version does, they just have the chapters mixed up (Ch.5 in old covers what Ch.4 in new does) so you will have to do a bit of looking if you bought this for a class and the teacher uses the newer version.

I've seen a lot of intro texts

This one stands out for its clarity and lack of too much of a materialist or idealist bias, which is where other intro texts have become annoying to me. I'm trying it for my next class because 3 of my colleagues have already recommended it.

JOHN W. SANTROCK, Ph.D., is a leading author of college success and psychology textbooks. I was required to have this book for a GUID 5 "College Success Skills" class. If that's why you're looking at it, then you don't have much of a choice. Otherwise, look somewhere else. I've found it nearly worthless at helping me adjust to college--all it seems to do is tell me what I already know (it points out what you need to "work on" in your life but gives you no suggestions on where to begin working). I'm surprised that the review says that it doesn't talk down to students--I think that's exactly what it does. It relies heavily on statistical stereotypes, and dispenses little practical advice. It seems as though anything they say that actually APPLIES to a person's real life, that person would most likely already know.

"I would say the Cannistraro book is the best all-around text on the market. It is especially good on the cultural and social aspects, but gives the other aspects its due weight. What I have noticed is that the students read it. I always had my doubts about other texts."

About the Author
Born in New York City, Philip V. Cannistraro is an authority on modern Italian history and the Italian-American experience. He studied in both the undergraduate and graduate programs at New York University and is now Distinguished Professor at Queens College and at the Graduate School, the City University of New York. Professor Cannistraro serves on the boards of several journals and is editor of THE ITALIAN AMERICAN REVIEW. He has written or edited a number of books, including CIVILIZATION OF THE WORLD (with R. Greaves, R. Murphey, and R. Zaller, 3/e., 1997), LA FABBRICA DEL CONSENSO: FASCISMO E MASS MEDIA (1975), FASCISMO, CHIESA E EMIGRAZIONE with G. Rosoli, 1979), HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF FASCIST ITALY (1981), and IL DUCE'S OTHER WOMAN, a biography of Margherita Sarfatti (with B. Sullivan, 1993).

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. Reich lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

Anderson's book is a primary example of signature anthropology methodology, i.e., ethnographic fieldwork or participant observation. He spent time with spirit mediums, joined in group seances, observed and recorded conversations between the living and the dead, arranged for spirit doctors to treat sick friends, and attended lectures at spiritist schools, and coffee klatches of the 'spirit society'.

About the Author
Robert Anderson is a physician-anthropologist who specializes in medical anthropology, including alternative medicine and healing, shamanism, and religion. He is a Medical Doctor (MD) who graduated from the University of Ciudad Juarez as well as a full Professor of Anthropology and Head of the Deparment of Sociology and Anthropology at Mills College, and his credentials are impressive with both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in anthropology from U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Anderson's interests in anthropology have always centered on issues of bipedalism--including back pain, bonesetting, and birthing--as well as medical anthropology and alternative medicine. While teaching in 1998 at the University of Iceland as a visiting Fulbright lecturer, Dr. Anderson was also researching alternative medicine. He discovered that in the North Atlantic, alternative medicine frequently included treatment by the ghosts of deceased doctors, which resulted in his fascinating fieldwork on religious beliefs and practices in contemporary Iceland that includes the paranormal. Over the years, he has served as Editor or as a member of the Editorial Board of several journals, including Medical Anthropology and Clinical Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, as well as the Director of Research at the San Francisco Spine Institute at Seton Medical Center. His published books include ALTERNATIVE AND CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE IN ICELAND: THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF LOW BACK PAIN (2000), and MAGIC, SCIENCE, AND HEALTH: THE AIMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY (1996).

I definitely recommend this book

I purchased this trip prior to a trip I was taking to Iceland and I found it VERY intriguing. It was written more from an anthropological point of view but this is what made it interesting for me. I am a paranormal researcher and investigator and I appreciate objective information and this book was just that. I do not go into a location that is suspected to have haunting activity with the intention to prove or disprove but it is important to try and discover what it is not before allowing yourself to believe what it might be. Using a "critical eye" is very important. This book is very much an anthropological study of Iceland's cultural phenomenon and traditions. Many cultures believe in ghosts and they can be a central part of their culture and Iceland is no different. I definitely recommend this book.

Elizabeth A. Segal is a Professor in Arizona State University's School of Social Work. Along with this text, Segal has multiple publications, including an introduction to social work text and numerous journal articles. She is a co-founder and editor emeritus of the Journal of Poverty.
