Very Good Bridge between Calc and Analysis

This book is a proof-based calculus and a first Analysis. I've had experience with a few Analysis books and this is much more approachable while still containing rigorous definitions and proofs. The author takes care to give intuitive examples and motivation. That being said, it would be difficult (but not impossible) for someone who wasn't familiar with writing and closely reading proofs. If you intend to attempt this book without having had some sort of math reasoning course or background you should pick up an introduction to proofs book - I suggest Eccles "Intro to math reasoning":

it's fair, not great tho

Fitz's Advanced calculus is a fair textbook. It's not great and the Rn is somewhat ponderously developed. Furthermore, there are typo errors that one can occasionally find in the book reading each section. Excercises vary in difficulty, number (some sections only have 10 problems and others have 30 problems) and quality. From my experience with this text, as a TA, the problems really don't develop the skills neccesary for learning higher math; rather, it bludgeons the reader to recall simple ideas and rehash them out in a proof (the Principle of Mathematical Induction is one example, a beautiful tool, but poorly used). Furthermore, certain proofs, like the Triangle Inequality, aren't rigorously laid out in the text. They simply sketch a proof and leave it at that. There are also small, but not inconsequential holes, in other proofs. If one does not have a brilliant lecturer to go along with this mediocore book, then the student could leave the class with terrible skill, or lack thereof, in proofs. Lastly, if one must purchase a Real Analysis text, go with Walter Rudin's Principles of Mathaematical Analysis. If that seems like a very big jump in mathematical difficulty and maturity level, then try Spivak's "Caluclus," Serge Lang's "Undergraduate Analysis," or Apostol as well. This text is a fair book, but certainly not outstanding or worth the price they're asking for.
BTW, if Real Analysis is the reader's first introduction to proof based mathematics, then he might do well to purchase a copy of "An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning." It's a small book for roughly $30, but it's a wonderful piece to properly develop the skills needed in theoretical math.

it's not a bad text

This is not a bad introduction to mathematical analysis. It provides a clear, concise, and often intuitive discussion of many of the fundamental topic in the field: sequences and series of reals, convergence, subsets, compactness, connectedness, differentiation, integration, the inverse and implicit function theorems and even a brief (not fully satisfactory ) discussion of metric spaces. Certainly it lacks rigour (it even neglects to properly develope the real number field), but it is nonetheless valuable as an introduction to mathematical reasoning. For those seeking more rigorous treatments of the subject at a more reasonable price I would have to agree with some of the other reviewers that Kolmogorov & Fomin's and Haaser & Sullivan's texts are wonderful. David Sprecher's text "The Elements of Analysis" is also well worth a look.

Ready for Climate and Change.....

Although they had visited two continents and settled in a third within the first month of their lives, I've often had to remind my children that books are the next best thing to travel. This volume is no exception. The excursions the reader embarks upon in this enjoyable collection are a remarkable adventure across six continents and fifteen cultures. More than geography or even culture, however, these stories tell intriguing tales of change -the inevitable, often frightening and at other times rejuvenating impact of both time and globalization. The change is all the more marked because it is recounted by an outsider who has become intimately acquainted with the culture, but following a distinct break in time since their last visit. I applaud the editors on their creative compilation.

Working on a doctorate linked to migration, I was first attracted to this volume by its subtitle. It wasn't until a few tales deep that I realized the ethnic groups described were moving less often, less swiftly -or at least, shorter distances-- then change itself. Far from being victims of that change, however, the authors eloquently describe cultures that show fierce resilience and crafty enterprise as they transform their identities to keep pace with a changing world. The most common change-related theme manifested in the fifteen chapters is identity. The second two most recurring themes are globalization and power.

Migration, in fact, took only the fourth place. Chavez has an excellent narrative that uses theory and history to compare the effect of migration on culture. It would have served well as an introductory piece in the section on migration (Part III); the other sections could likewise have benefitted from a global opening chapter. The tales specifically dealing with migration were as colorful as they are incomparable. The Yolmo in Nepal have a complex network enabling international labor migration, far from home. The Rashaayda of Sudan, a Bedouin tribe born in migration, see their culture evolving (and migration slowing) due to policy, war and economic pull factors in Saudi Arabia. The Mardu of Western Australia, originally nomadic hunter gatherers, started to settle under the influence of ecological change and colonization. Although not included in Part III, the chapter on the Vasilikans in Greece specifically describes migration networks that satisfy the growing need for consumer goods, marriage and labor networks. Migration in China has also contributed to an evolving construction of identity.

Change is described through these chapters as a result of time, of globalization, of capitalism, of simple exposure to external stimuli or other ways of living; usually change arrives softly and gradually, sometimes so much so that it is hard to discern. Setting aside migration, the most common catalysts of change among these fifteen cultures include market forces, state policy, colonization and technology. Seven of the adventures gave importance to transnational market forces, economics and/or wage labor: the Canela of Brazil, the Yaxbe'os of Yucatan, the Rashaayda of Sudan, the Yolmo in Nepal, the Sambia of New Guinea and the Vasilikans in Greece. This is not to say that the economy was the only driver of change, but rather was accompanied by the influence of policy, modernity, marriage, colonization, religion, and schools. In four cultures, state/policy surfaced as a key driver of change: the Minangkabau of Sumatra, China, the Mardu of Australia and again, the Rashaayda of Sudan. Colonization was a focus in three cultures: those of the Sambia of New Guinea, the Mardu of Australia, and the Aztecs in Mexico, while Technology/modernity played a key role in China, the Crofters of Scotland and the Vasilikans in Greece. Among the Vice Lords in Chicago, kinship and the Nation of Islam drive recent changes, and in the Ju/'houansi of Nambia/Botswana, continuity and female autonomy.

Despite the colorful travels, as I turned the pages, I desired more information than that which was offered. At each frontier between chapters, a short biography is provided to describe the profiles of the tour guide / author. Although an excellent initiative, there seems to be no standard for these descriptions; some are written in first, others in third person; some give great detail, others offer little useful information. It would be helpful, especially to students or newcomers to anthropology, to be able to learn from these profiles the author's specialty within anthropology, his/her major contribution to the field and perspectives. Although in this era, much information can be extracted with little ingenuity from the internet, it is pleasant to learn effortlessly at the start of the voyage the key formative factors of one's tour guide, i.e. gender, nationality and specialty.

Unfortunately, although westerners and Anglophones hold no monopoly on culture, change or ethnography, less than three out of fifteen authors seem to be from beyond North America, with almost none schooled far from the U.S. A Japanese perspective of the stereotypical Midwest USA between the 1980s and 21st Century in Wisconsin is particularly refreshing. A chapter or two more from other authors who view change through non-western or, at least less American glasses would greatly enhance the volume. Certainly there is no lack of modern anthropological works from foreign scholars.

The most jolting gap in the volume is the near total silence of the natural environment as a driver of major cultural change. Only once was the ecological climate -gradual or abrupt-- mentioned as an even remote force edging cultures towards forced adaptation and evolution. This was in the chapter on the Mardu of Western Australia and received a total of three lines (spanning pages 226-227). Most of the fifteen cultures are portrayed as largely detached from the natural environments in which they live. They are described to engage in the social, and at times economical, construction of their identities, leaving the influence of the environment to the imagination of the reader. Despite excellent and vivid ethnographies, the tales surface, thus, as partial. Nowhere was there even the hint of a political ecology of globalization where politics, economy and the environment join in a rich trio to mold new culture.

In our epoch, when climate change is awarded the ultimate Nobel Peace prize, it is time for anthropologists to specifically research the impact of the environment on cultures across the globe. It would be beneficial to give those persecuted by harsh environments voice and agency before western governments make them the next "public enemy". If anthropologists happen to be rare in this particular field, there are many geographers and other interdisciplinarians that avidly and astutely apply "Foucault". They could join together to produce the sequel volume: Climate and Change in Fifteen Cultures.

This could have been amazing.

Normally I don't write reviews, but I'm writing this in hopes that the authors/publishers will read this. I bought this book as a textbook for an Anthropology class discussing globalization and change. While there is a lot of good information found in the text, the presentation is abhorrent. Most of the chapters read like research or book proposals; instead of simply presenting the information (which there is plenty of!) the authors also provided a lot of information that was not important to the context of the book. If the information were presented in a more coherent manner it would be a better read and more cohesive. This disjointed effort is a good attempt, but falls short of leaving a meaningful impact because of such a poor presentation.

About the Author
Kathleen M. Galotti holds a B.A. in psychology and economics from Wellesley College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology and an M.S.E. in computer and information sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. A full professor of psychology and cognitive studies at Carleton College, she serves as the director of an interdisciplinary program in cognitive studies that she helped establish in 1989. She is a former chairperson of the psychology department at Carleton College and teaches courses in introductory psychology, statistics, cognitive, and developmental psychology. Kathleen Galotti is the author or co-author of dozen of studies in cognitive and developmental psychology. Her research centers on the development of reasoning and decision-making skills from the preschool period through adulthood, and on the styles with which adolescents and adults plan for the future, make important life commitments, and learn new information. Her research has been funded through the NSF, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She recently authored a book entitled Making Decisions that Matter: How People Face Important Life Choices (Erlbaum, 2002).

About the Author
Dr. John Gardner is Director, CAES Energy Efficiency Research Institute at Boise State University. As a member of the City of Boise Climate Protection Committee and the Boise Public Works Commission, Dr. Gardner has worked on citywide programs to minimize energy consumption through better planning, incentives for efficient design and changes in city operations. He also is a member of the Idaho Power Integrated Resource Plan Advisory Committee, which helps the utility make decisions regarding the evolving needs of customers. In his current work through Boise State's Division of Research, Dr. Gardner deals directly with facilities managers, electric utility representatives, state officials and executives to plan for sustainability programs. As EERI moves forward, he will continue guiding energy research, environmental policy and campus sustainability efforts at Boise State. These efforts have exposed many potential research issues that could be explored and applied more broadly through EERI.

One way of doing machine simulations

This book was pretty good as describing some methods for using MATLAB and Simulink to analyze and predict machine motion. There are other methods that I learned in school that I preferred but if you are new to the subject, this is pretty good. I'm not sure how up to date it is now.

About the Author
Steffen W. Schmidt is a professor of political science at Iowa State University. He grew up in Colombia, South America, and has studied in Colombia, Switzerland, and France. He has a B.A. from Rollins College and obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, in public law and government. Schmidt has published fourteen books and over one hundred and thirty articles in scholarly journals and is the recipient of numerous prestigious teaching prizes, including the Amoco Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in Teaching and the Teacher of the Year award. He is a pioneer in the use of web-based and real-time video courses and is a member of the American Political Science Association's section on Computers and Multimedia. He is known as "Dr. Politics" for his extensive commentary on US politics in US and international media. He is a weekly blogger for Gannett, comments on CNN en Espanol and Univision as well as WNYC, New York. He's on Facebook (SteffenWSchmidt) and Twitter (DrPolitics).

Mack C. Shelley, II is a professor of political science and statistics at Iowa State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, DC, he went on to graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he received a master's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Political Science. He arrived at Iowa State in 1979. From 1993 to 2002 he served as elected co-editor of the POLICY STUDIES JOURNAL. Shelley has also published numerous articles, books, and monographs on public policy, including THE PERMANENT MAJORITY: THE CONSERVATIVE COALITION IN THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS; BIOTECHNOLOGY AND THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE: A GUIDE TO THE LITERATURE (with William F. Woodman and Brian J. Reichel); AMERICAN PUBLIC POLICY: THE CONTEMPORARY AGENDA (with Steven G. Koven and Bert E. Swanson); and QUALITY RESEARCH IN LITERACY AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES AND GOLD STANDARDS (with Larry Yore and Brian Hand).

Barbara A. Bardes is professor emerita of political science at the University of Cincinnati. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Kent State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She served as a faculty member in political science and dean of Mundelein College at Loyola University of Chicago. In 1993, she was appointed dean of Raymond Walters College of the University of Cincinnati, where she served until 2003. She returned to the political science department where she held the position of graduate director before retiring. Bardes has written articles on public and foreign policy, and women and politics. As Liberal as Liberal gets!!! I think they mention gay marriage in this book about 100 times!!! They also make Obama seem like the greatest president in our history!!! To me, way too much opinion and not enough facts. Only got it because it was required reading in my government class. Would rather have read The Complete Idiot's Guide to U.S. Government and Politics!!!

About the Author
Joseph Walsh received his MSW and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He is Associate Professor of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University and teaches courses in generalist practice, clinical practice, research, and mental and emotional disorders. He has been a direct services practitioner in the field of mental health since 1974, first in a psychiatric hospital and later in community mental health center settings. Joe has provided services to older adult and general outpatient populations, but he specializes in services to people with serious mental illness and their families. He is the author of two other Brooks/Cole texts, CLINICAL CASE MANAGEMENT WITH PERSONS HAVING MENTAL ILLNESS and THEORIES FOR DIRECT SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE.

I got this book quick and fast from Amazon!

I got this book for my Social Work class and it's the smallest of out of my textbook that semester. Even though the book is short it's very, very dry. But it's very informative and good for the basis for learning about Intervention.

Chapter 1 through 5 now provide a strong background in chemical and biological concepts, reactor fundamentals, and other key process. Subsequent chapters present a practical approach to the design of water and wastewater treatment plants, carefully explaining new technologies that affect the design of such facilities. New problems and worked examples have been developed to give readers a greater practical understanding of unit operations.

About the Author
Paul Richards FSA, DL was born and bred in King's Lynn and studied for both BA and PhD degrees in History at Birmingham University followed by teacher training at Nottingham. Paul taught in further and higher education at the College of West Anglia. He has been a part-time tutor for the WEA, Open University and university extra departments. He was a borough councillor (King's Lynn and West Norfolk) and Mayor (1998-2000) before becoming an Honorary Alderman. His History of King's Lynn was published in 1990, and he has written articles on local and regional history for various publications. Amongst several other interests, he is a trustee of True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum, a member of the King's Lynn Festival board and a town guide.

Unit Operations and Processes in Environmental Engineering

Good and well organized book for a graduate class in environmental/sanitary engineering. Unlike the traditionally used book, it is organized for easy reference and study. It includes most of the unit processes to consider in the desing of wastewater and water treatment plants. I wish it would expand a litte more in the water part. The wastewater is covered very well. It is a good book to keep as a reference. Answer to key problems are provided for easiness of verification of process. Couple of formulas are outdated in the air transfer chapter, not major problem.

Lacks Explanations for Many Problems, Lots of Typoes and Incorrect Information

This is possibly one of the worst texts I have ever used. Many of the example problems contain typos or diagrams that do not match the given problem. Numbers are often pulled out of thin air without explanation. Many of the "answers" in the back of the text are incorrect. Some chapter problems cover material not covered in the chapters. Additionally, the solutions provided by the publisher are often incorrect. This textbook needs a significant overhaul before it can be considered appropriate for use in undergraduate or graduate programs!!
