About the Author
Joel Samaha is University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. He received his B.A. (History), J.D., and Ph.D. (History) from Northwestern University and studied under Sir Geoffrey Elton at Cambridge University, England. Professor Samaha was admitted to the Illinois Bar, briefly practiced law in Chicago, and then taught at UCLA. In 1971, he joined the University of Minnesota, where he served as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies for four years, taught television and radio courses in criminal justice, co-taught a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar in legal and constitutional history, was named College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teacher in 1974, and named University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2007. Professor Samaha's works have appeared in Historical Journal, American Journal of Legal History, Minnesota Law Review, William Mitchell Law Review, and Journal of Social History.

Awesome book! Lots of useful information.!

This book provides all the basic information in criminal justice. It is clear and doesn't go above your head with technical lingo. I had Joel Samaha as a professor at the University of Minnesota and he is very knowledgable in his area. This book is filled with useful information if you are persuing a career in law enforcement. I would recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out in a intro. to crimal justice class. It also comes in handy as reference for those who are more advanced. I often use it to brush up on facts in my upper division courses. It's worth the price!

About the Author
Debra L. DeLaet is a Professor of Politics and International Relations at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where she teaches courses on human rights, global health, the United Nations, international law, and gender & world politics. Her major research interests are in the area of human rights, global health, and gender issues in world politics. She is the author of U.S. Immigration Policy in an Age of Rights (Praeger 2000) and (co-authored with David E. DeLaet) Global Health in the 21st Century: the Globalization of Disease and Wellness (Paradigm Publishers, 2012). In addition to these books, she has published numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of topics, including gay marriage as a religious right, justice for children born of war, and sexual orientation discrimination in international human rights law.

About the Author
Stanley R. Alten teaches audio production, TV/film aesthetics, writing, and criticism. Before joining the Syracuse University faculty, he worked in radio and television as a producer, writer, sound designer, performer, and station manager in numerous markets, including Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. He also has many film and record production credits and continues to be professionally active through his own production company. Alten is an internationally recognized authority in sound production. He is the author of AUDIO IN MEDIA, the leading audio-production text in North America for more than two decades. The book has been translated into Spanish, Korean, German, and Chinese. Recently, Alten authored a brief version of it titled AUDIO BASICS, also published with Cengage Learning. Other writing credits include AUDIO AND MEDIA: THE RECORDING STUDIO, which focuses on music recording. He also has written many articles for the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO, WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA (for which he served as audio editor), and the INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EDUCATION, 2nd Edition. He has been honored for teaching excellence by the Outstanding Educators of America, Alpha Epsilon Rho, and the National Science Foundation.

Not for Beginners

If, as this book claims, is a beginner's guide offering a nontechnical approach, than I am the Queen of England. I have an advanced degree, am published myself and work as a college professor in another field, but for all practical purposes, this book might as well as be in another language. If this book is truly for beginners, it would avoid sentences like "There are two parallel signal strengths, channel and monitor. In the I/O section, equalization and other signal processing can be delegated to the monitor system for auditioning without effecting the signal being sent to the multitrack recorder, or the signal can be sent to multitrack recorder, or both." Sure.

The editors at Wadsworth should have caught this, but my guess is no editor ever read it. Expensive and frustrating.

About the Author
Professor Cooper is the Gund Professor of Liberal Arts in the Department of Political Science at the University of Vermont. He received his BA in Government at California State University, Sacramento and the M.A. and Ph.D. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University. He has taught at several universities, including Georgia State University, the Nelson Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy of the State University of New York at Albany, and the University of Kansas, with faculty appointments in Public Administration, Political Science, Public Policy, and Law. He has served as Chair of the Department of Political Science at the State University of New York at Albany, Chair of the Department of Public Administration at the University of Kansas, and Director of the Master of Public Administration Program at the University of Vermont. Active in a variety of leading public administration professional associations and journal editorial boards, Professor Cooper was the first recipient of the Charles Levine Award given by the American Society for Public Administration and the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration to the person determined to be the nation's outstanding example of excellence in public affairs scholarship, teaching, and service. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He has also received the Town Government Award given by the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. He is the author of numerous books and articles on public administration, administration law, constitutional law, law and public policy, environmental policy, and sustainable development administration. He has served as a consultant to the United Nations and the World Bank on sustainable development administration. He has also been a consultant to local governments, state and federal agencies, the U.S. Congress, and the White House.

I used this book for an undergraduate course. The prose is easy to read. Sometimes sections seem disjointed,, but overall a good textbook. If you want to know how American religion came to be where it is today, this book will explain it all.

About the Author
Bruce L. Bowerman is a professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in statistics from Iowa State University in 1974 and has over 32 years of experience teaching basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate students. In 1987 Professor Bowerman received an Outstanding Teaching award from the Miami University senior class, and in 1992 he received the Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Richard T. O¿Connell, Professor Bowerman has written ten textbooks. In addition to the earlier editions of this forecasting textbook, these textbooks include BUSINESS STATISTICS IN PRACTICE and LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS: AN APPLIED APPROACH. The first edition of FORTECASTING AND TIME SERIES earned an Outstanding Academic Book award from CHOICE magazine. Professor Bowerman has also published a number of articles in applied stochastic processes, time series forecasting, and statistical education.

intermediate level time series book

I reviewed the third edition of this book for the American Statistician in 1994. The book covers most of the important topics for an applied course and has a reasonable list of references. There are many examples and homework exercises. Statistical software packages such as SAS and MINITAB are used throughout in example problems. The early chapters cover the basics of statistical inference and regression (Chapters 2-5). This material can be skipped in a first time series course if introductory statistics is a prerequisite.

The latter chapters cover time series regression, seasonal decomposition methods, exponential smoothing and Box-Jenkins methods. But this book does not include nonlinear time series models and it overlooks the recent and popular state space approach to time series modeling. Multivariate time series methods are also left out, though perhaps they are more appropriate for an advanced or second course in time series analysis.

The cookbook nature of the text can be found in the guidelines given for Box-Jenkins model identification. The statistical theory that the methods rely on is avoided. Although a number of important probability distributions are used with their relevant statistical tables, the underlying assumptions and distributional theory is completely avoided.

Important concepts such as the central limit theorem and the concept of a stationary stochastic process are given only very brief treatment. Other concepts are oversimplified to avoid the need for the development of any distribution theory.

This book will serve well for a course in which the student is interested in how to implement exponential smoothing and the general class of Box-Jenkins models through the use of standard statistical packages. However if the instructor wants depth of understanding the text is not adequate. Frequecy domain methods often useful in engineering applications are not even discussed.

While the book covers forecasting applications, it does not consider applications to decomposition of variance or discriminant analysis. Time series methods are also applicable in these contexts. Abraham and Ledolter (1984) "Statistical Methods for Forecasting" cover the same topics but in much greater depth. Also Janacek and Swift (1993) "Time Series: Forecasting, Simulation, Applications" is slightly more advanced and provides broader coverage. Anyone interested in the theory can consult a number of good books including the latest edition of Brockwell and Davis "Time Series: Theory and Methods". Shumway and Stoffer (2000) "Time Series Analysis and Its Applications" is up-to-date, comprehensive and has many good engineering applications.

This book covers step by step methodology and theory for the basic time series concepts. It has worked out examples with even the most rudimentary calculations demonstrated for complex subjects like ARMA and Box-Cox decomposition. It is a good book for basic practitioners and those with a basic interest in time series analysis

Outstanding text on time series forecasting

This is a very well written textbook on time series forecasting. This 725 page textbook provides thorough coverage of time series methods from elementary statistics to Box-Jenkins models and transfer functions and intervention models. It is easy to read and includes many tables of actual data which are analyzed. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Mary Warner Marien teaches at Syracuse University where she worked closely with William Fleming on the previous edition of ARTS and IDEAS. She is the author of numerous articles, book reviews, and essays on these and other subjects. Her book, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ITS CRITICS: A CULTURAL HISTORY was named one of the two best books in photographic history for 1997. She recently completed PHOTOGRAPHY: A CULTURAL HISTORY (2002), a new survey of the history of photography, with special emphasis on contemporary global practice. Her current research project is an investigation of the women's movement in the late twentieth-century and its relationship to feminist art and art theory.

William Fleming became an associate professor of Fine Arts at Syracuse University in 1945. Feeling that the Humanities program at SU did not sufficiently serve the needs of a growing Fine Arts program, Fleming founded the Department of Fine Arts in 1947 and became its first chairman. He held this position until 1969. It was during this time that William Fleming authored ARTS and IDEAS. First published in 1955, this work served as the synthesis of music and art that Fleming had been so desperately seeking. In 1970, Fleming was named Centennial Professor of Fine Arts, for his outstanding leadership and contributions to his field. Upon his retirement from Syracuse University in 1975, he was named Centennial Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts.

About the Author
Gary E. Kessler received his Ph.D. from Columbia University where he studied philosophy and comparative religions. After teaching at Bard College, he accepted a position at California State University, Bakersfield where he taught for over thirty years. His most recent research centers on religion and violence. Class Reference

This book was recommended by my teacher and unless you know nothing about Matlab this book will not help you in a class. It would be fine if you just wanted to know about Matlab or if you know nothing about Matlab. My personal opinion is this book was a waste of my six bucks

About the Author
Hedley Nosworthy is Professor of Music at El Camino College, Torrance, CA. He has been teaching Voice for 25 years. His own career included leading tenor Opera roles both in Europe and the United States, considerable Musical Theater, Oratorio, and Concert experience, and numerous recitals. His students are international competition winners, Grammy award winners, professional Opera, Concert, Broadway, and Jazz, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Heavy Metal, and religious music singers. He spent almost six years studying with William Vennard on the Graduate and Post-Graduate levels at the University of Southern California.

Peter Summers earned both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in English Literature from Cambridge University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film from the University of California, Los Angeles. A published author and successful screenwriter, he has worked in post-production for many major Hollywood films including "Gladiator," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Star Wars Episode II."

Accompaniments play the melody.

The quality of the music was fine. However, I ordered it thinking that I could use the tracks for accompaniments. However, the one track I checked, Down by the Salley Gardens played the melody along with the accompaniment and therefore it will not suit my purposes. I assume the other selections are similar, though I did not check them. Sorry I couldn't give a better review.
