The author has written about issues facing law enforcement on information and intelligence sharing, what works, what doesn't. I have just made it a required text for my fall classes. His one statement brings the focus of the book to heart...'Despite the police fetish for secrecy, the reasons for not sharing crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11'."

About the Author
Jonathan R. White is professor of interdisciplinary studies in the Frederik Meijer Honors College of Grand Valley State University. The founding director of GVSU's School of Criminal Justice, Dr. White was promoted to dean of Social Sciences and served there until he was summoned to the Bureau of Justice Assistance to direct the State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT) program after the attacks of 9-11. He conducted counterterrorism training for law enforcement and military forces in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and throughout the United States. A recognized expert on religious terrorism, Dr. White currently teaches classes on national security, intelligence analysis, and counterterrorism in the Meijer Honors College.

The 'MUST Read' for law enforcement intelligence students

Jonathan R. White's Defending the Homeland: Domestic Intelligence, Law Enforcement, and Security is the book I assign as the keystone text for a Law Enforcement Intelligence course. It is a `must read' because it correctly portrays intelligence as both art and science, deeply rooted in action-making tangible things happen, getting real things done-by reducing warfare to its simplest level and thereby limiting the negative effects of susceptibilities such as fog, chance, and friction. This volume makes sense of how the traditionally polar fields of law enforcement and intelligence can develop a symbiotic relationship for synergistic effect.

Because it is one of the first sources for this argument, it serves as a measuring stick for both policy and operational analysis. It examines the concepts, uses, and limits of strategic intelligence in contrast to operational imperatives. Very little has been previously offered in law enforcement intelligence beyond rhetoric-which are sound as far as they go-such as, `intelligence is the key to the problem', or `the support of the population must be won'. Students and practitioners tasked with, or having previously experienced the responsibility of actually executing missions will appreciate this book the most.

The essence of the book can clearly be defined as delineating the parameters of low intensity conflict and law enforcement; to deduce from them the principles of asymmetric warfare, and to outline the corresponding strategy and tactics.

With that said, the book is very outdated. Hopefully your teacher won't choose it for your class. If they do, it's a very short book, like 7 chapters. One could easily read it in a matter of hours or days.

It's an old book.

The truth is, this book was published in 1993. Computer technology has advanced quite a bit since then, even though the roots of logical machines hasn't. This book is okay, but it belongs more in a historical library. It's a good buy, though. I just could not use it for my computer engineering class. :(

Good book covering core features of hardware

This is the textbook used in a computer hardware class I have taken - its a good read and has some clear explanations and good illustrated examples of the ideas - found several errors and typos in the logic diagrams and am not sure if their outlined in a errata supplement. some of the technology seems to be a bit dated in the later chapters, but the ideas still hold.- Overall a good introductory text book.

About the Author
Ellie Whitney, PhD grew up in New York City and received her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English and biology at Radcliffe/Harvard University and Washington Universities, respectively. She has taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, has written newspaper columns on environmental matters for the Tallahassee Democrat, and has authored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which have been revised multiple times over the years. In addition to teaching and writing, she has spent the past three-plus decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology. Her latest book is Priceless Florida: The Natural Ecosystems (Pineapple Press, 2004).

Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.

excellent book! love reading it! i had the 1st edition so i decided to buy this edition (6th). i read it all week long. fantastic information and worth the money. i bought it used for under a buck + shipping so i got more than my money's worth with this one. Ellie Whitey is awesome. really knows her stuff. if you want to learn about nutrition the right way this is the book to do it with.

Waste of Money....

This is probably the worst textbook on this topic because it does little justice to the concepts. I found it hard to understand exactly what the book was talking about and what the exercise questions were asking. In many cases, I was unable to find any corelating content in the book, between questions and answers.

The book also references some languages such as ADA , FORTRAN, ML, etc. Unfortunately, it simply touches each one vaguely. I was REALLY put off by this book. It is very verbose and does not approach topics in a linear way. I used the book for an online course and resorted to consulting other books, such as "Learning Computer Programming: It's Not About Languages" by Mary E. Farrell.

Too vague and general

I used this book for my programming language concepts course, and I was quite disappointed. It's just way too vague, trying to cover too many things. And few, if any, of the concepts from chaper to chapter carry through to develop a cohesive understanding. I also think most people who'd consider this book (or take a class requiring it) should have the knack to pick this stuff up pretty quickly from experimenting and perhaps a website tutorial or two.
I did enjoy the chapter on axiomatic semantics, which offers a straightforward approach to proving programs and more importantly loop invariants. But that was hardly worth nearly $100.

This book is very vague, doesn't go into enough detail about anything and the examples and practice problems are badly worded and poorly explained. HORRIBLE. I've heard that Programming Language Pragmatics by Michael L. Scott is a great book.

About the Author
Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

Kathryn Pinna received her M.S. and Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught nutrition, food science, and human biology courses in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years and has also worked as an outpatient dietitian, Internet consultant, and freelance writer. Her other publications include the textbooks Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition for Health and Health Care. She is a registered dietitian and member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ellie Whitney, Ph.D. grew up in New York City and received her BA and PhD degrees in English and Biology at Harvard and Washington Universities. She taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, wrote newspaper columns on environmental matters for the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, and coauthored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which repeatedly reappear as new editions. She spen three decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology, and then cowrote PRICELESS FLORIDA: NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS AND NATIVE SPECIES (Pineapple Press, 2004). Now retired, and more concerned about climate change than any other issue, she volunteers full-time for the nonpartisan national nonprofit Citizens Climate Lobby.

A 3 star rating with reservations

I had to give this book a 3 star rating for the ease of information it contains concerning the enzymatic pathways used by each vitamin or mineral. The book is also easy to read. Having said that however, this book is typical American Dietetic Association Clap Trap. I have both the 6th and 7th Editions of this book and with only small qualifications in the 7th edition, both books endorse aspartame and condemn stevia, regurgitate standard government misinformation about nutrition, knock dietary supplements, and actually list Steven Barrett's Quackwatch site as a reliable source of information on what is quackery and what is not! The chapters on Cancer and HIV and Nutrition are virtually useless. If you do buy this book for the basic information it contains on metabolic pathways and co-enzyme structures, then do yourself a favor and also get "Clinical Nutrition, A Functional Approach", put out by the Institute for Functional Medicine, and "The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book", by Shari Lieberman, among others. Find out the Real Cutting Edge science of Nutrition and why standard American Dietetic Association Fare with their Corrupt Corporate sponsors calling the shots in Government Nutrition information is not reliable.

Good Choice for Students, Has Limitations

This book has very scientific explanations of all areas of human nutrition. It is a good choice for students, but not people hoping to get a good reference and go-to book. It gets a little dense on some subjects, and has too much on a few clinical dietetic issues, so overall it can be lopsided. For an inexpensive book for students, it is still a good choice.

Awful presentation

It is unfortunate that I had to use this book for my Statics course just because it was written at my school (Georgia Tech). The material in this book is poorly presented and far from complete. If your professor requires this book try to present an alternative for future classes. You will be doing your classmates a favor.

This book is garbage. The typos in the problem section are frustrating (check out the free body diagram answers for chapter 4) and the material is poorly presented. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University, where he was a faculty member for nine years. After leaving Northeastern, he held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. He then taught in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell for more than 26 years. Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach online courses. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Brandon C. Welsh is an Associate Professor in the College of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University as well as a Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement at Free University in Amsterdam. His research interests focus on the prevention of crime and delinquency and evidence-based crime policy. Dr. Welsh has published extensively in these areas and is an author or editor of seven books. Born in Canada, he received his undergraduate and M.A. degrees at the University of Ottawa and his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in England.

About the Author
Bruce Russett is Dean Acheson Professor of International Relations and Director of United Nations Studies at Yale University. Since 1972, he has edited the JOURNAL OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION and has been president of the International Studies Association and the Peace Science Society (International). He also has taught at Columbia University, MIT, and the Free University of Brussels and was Visiting Professor of International Capital Markets Law at the University of Tokyo. He has held research appointments at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, The Richardson Institute in London, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, and the University of Tel Aviv.

Harvey Starr is the Dag Hammarskjold Professor in International Affairs and Chair of the Department of Government and International Studies at the University of South Carolina. He is the former president of the Conflict Processes Section of the American Political Science Association, the APSA vice president, and the president of the Peace Science Society. He served as editor of INTERNATIONAL INTERACTIONS and associate editor of the JOURNAL OF POLITICS. He also has taught at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and the Australian National University.

David Kinsella is Professor and Chair of Political Science, and Director of the Public Affairs and Policy Ph.D. program in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and has held faculty positions at American University and the University of Missouri. His primary areas of research are the global arms trade, regional conflict, democratic peace, and just war theory.

Higher menu

I have used this book in the World Politics class that I have been teaching at the local community college. In many ways, it seems more in line with an advanced undergraduate or even graduate level introductory text on various conceptual issues and frameworks possible for the analysis of international relations.

The idea of the `menu' of choices is introduced early, and this menu draws upon the different levels of analysis available from schemes such as that by James Rosenau (which identifies six levels: individual decisionmakers, decisionmaker roles, government structures, society, relations between state and international actors, and world system). These are options within the menu, but then there are elements of opportunity and willingness that are coupled with other elements for a more complex analysis.

From this beginning, different paradigms are given, including realist (realpolitick), idealist/liberal (idealpolitick), and radical (Marxist and other) paradigms. The same events, actors and issues can be explored in each of these paradigms, yielding different results. There are a few other paradigms referenced, but these are not generally used through the text.

The overall structure of the book then goes to looking at world politics and international relations both from a world systems view to comparative and foreign policy standpoints. Following this is a section on international conflict and cooperation, including international law and issues of war and peace. Next is a section on international political economy, which looks at issues of defense, resources, developmental gaps, integration and globalization issues. The final section address future possibilities in three modes, as well as pressing problems facing the world on a major scale at present.

The authors use game theory quite extensively throughout the text (which was sometimes confusing for my first-year and second-year undergraduate students - this is where the idea that this should be a graduate student text arises for me). As the authors state, this book uses game theory `more, indeed, than most other books of this sort. Rational choice analysis is an increasingly common approach to the study of world politics.' Game theory is an effective way of doing this, but presupposes a certain level of comfort with the concepts (often mathematically or logically based) that some of my students did not have.

I do appreciate the extra resources available for students via their website. There is also a good number of maps, charts, graphs and other pieces beyond the simple narrative text that are helpful to students. However, this book does presume some level of familiarity with the international system, governments in general, and some degree of history that many beginning undergraduates do not possess. I would gladly use this text again for an advanced undergraduate text, possibly for a course that follows a comparative politics course.

A Top Book, One of Three in English

I buy books from three sources: Amazon online (80%), airport bookstores (15%), and selected university bookstores (5%). This one came to me from a visit to the University of Colorado bookstore, where I was quite impressed by the breadth and depth of the selection across all topics.

I bought this book because the table of contents is one of the very best I have seen, and even if only the table of contents were memoized, one would be well-prepared for a senior undergraduate or master's degree final examination.

While grotesquely over-priced, as most textbooks are (it cost the publisher $5.70, at most, to print this book, a penny a page), I will leave that to the side, but it is a factor in the loss of one star.

This book could and should be completely re-designed to add more white space, dramatically improve the coverage of the ten threats, twelve policies, and eight challenges, dramatically improve the coverage of decision-support both secret and non-secret, and introduce a complete new section on national, regional, and global budgets as they represent our actual priorities, together with a completely new section on sub-state (vice non-governmental) tribes, clans, families, and neighborhoods. In my view, this book has the potential to be a "keeper" for every student that buys it, and I would design it--and price it--accordingly.

The books lacks a more revisionist appreciation of the damage that the United Kingdom and the USA have done in their combined two centuries of colonialism, unilateral militarism including horrendous war crimes against most indigenous cultures, and predatory capitalism (not ignoring the same crimes by Spain and Portugal, France, Germany, and Russia).

Were I teaching today, I would lean toward assigning this as the text to one third of the class, with the two books below being assigned to the other two thirds of the class, and everyone having to also buy the third book. See my comment for a URL where anyone can receive, for free, a weekly report, "GLOBAL REALITY: The Week in Review," covering in less than 8 pages, the ten threats, twelve policies, and eight major players other than the EU and US.

The two books below are better than this book, but this book is most definitely in my top three. See my lists for many other books regarding the information society, intelligence, emerging threats, strategy & force structure, anti-Americanism, blowback, and dissent, and the negative impact of domestic politics on sound foreign policy.
