About the Author
Ralph A. Rossum received his doctorate from the University of Chicago. He is Henry Salvatori Professor of Political Philosophy and American Constitutionalism at Claremont McKenna College.

G. Alan Tarr received his doctorate from the University of Chicago. He is a distinguished professor of political science and director of the Center for State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, Camden. Professor Tarr has served as a constitutional consultant in Russia, South Africa, Cyprus, and Burma. A three-time NEH Fellow, he is currently completing a study of judicial independence and accountability in the American states.

Doman Lum is professor emeritus of social work at California State University, Sacramento. His previous texts include SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE AND PEOPLE OF COLOR: A PROCESS-STAGE APPROACH; MULTIDIMENSIONAL PRACTICE: DIVERSITY IN CONTEXT; CULTURAL COMPETENCE, PRACTICE STAGES AND CLIENT SYSTEMS: A CASE STUDY APPROACH; SOCIAL WORK AND HEALTH CARE POLICY; and RESPONDING TO SUICIDAL CRISIS. He has written articles on Asian Americans, health care delivery and health maintenance organizations, culturally diverse social work practice, suicide prevention, and pastoral counseling. Dr. Lum is a consulting editor for THE JOURNAL OF ETHNIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN SOCIAL WORK and ARETE, and has been on the board of directors and the Commission on Accreditation for the Council on Social Work Education. He received the Distinguished Recent Contributions in Social Work Education award from the Council on Social Work Education in 2000. He is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ, Northern California Conference.

complexity of clients

The book is for social workers who need to take into account the cultural and ethnic facets of their clients. Thus, there are chapters on dealing with native Americans (referred to in the book as First Nations people), African Americans, Latinos and Asians. But there are also a chapter for when a client might be gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender. And another chapter for refugees and one for disabled clients.

Naturally, each chapter can only hope to briefly deal with its topic. The text is meant as a broad overview.

All this attests to the sheer complexity of dealing with the human condition. The book reminds us constantly of this. It is very commendable in the attention given to the diversity of client types and needs.

Curriculum text review

I purchased this book for a course I am taking, so it was required. The text is fairly straightforward, but would really benefit from more examples (across content areas) and more in depth explanations. I could really have used concept map examples for reading and writing curriculums. The end of chapter activities are great exercises, but how about an answer key? I am taking this course as a web-based class and would like more validation of my understanding. Overall, this book does a good job explaining the parts and steps involved in a thorough course development. I feel I have a solid foundation to start designing curriculum.

About the Author
Roberta Greene is a professor and The Louis and Ann Wolens Centennial Chair in Gerontology and Social Welfare at the University of Texas, Austin. She received her MSW from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. in human development from the University of Maryland. Dr. Greene's work experience has included clinical social work with older adults and their families, marriage and family therapy, as well as refugee resettlement. She has worked for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) as a staff member and was instrumental in passing the 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act (OBRA). Dr. Greene also worked for the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) as a curriculum development specialist. Before coming to The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, Dr. Greene taught at George Mason University, the University of Maryland, the University of Georgia, and served as Dean at Indiana University School of Social Work. Dr. Greene is the author of eight texts and numerous research articles. She currently is continuing her scholarship through filmmaking and Web site design. In addition, she serves on a number of editorial review boards including the Journal of Social Work Education.

About the Author
V. Mark Durand is known worldwide as an authority in the area of autism spectrum disorders. He is a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where he was the founding Dean of Arts and Sciences and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. Durand is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received over $4 million in federal funding to study the behavior problems in children with disabilities. Previously he served in a variety of leadership positions at the University at Albany, including chair of the psychology department, interim dean of Arts and Sciences, and founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (all in psychology) at the State University of New York Stony Brook. Dr. Durand was awarded the University Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Albany in 1991, and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 2007. Currently a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Autism Society of America, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and has written 10 books as well as over 100 publications on functional communication, educational programming, and behavior therapy. Dr. Durand developed a unique treatment for severe behavior problems that is used worldwide. Most recently he developed an innovative approach (Optimistic Parenting) to help families work with their challenging children.

David H. Barlow is an internationally recognized expert and leader in clinical psychology, having pioneered many treatments and investigations in anxiety and mood disorders. Currently Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Boston University, Dr. Barlow is also founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, one of the largest research clinics of its kind in the world. Previously, he was distinguished professor at State University of New York at Albany. From 1975 to 1979, he was professor of psychiatry and psychology at Brown University, where he also founded the clinical psychology internship program. From 1969 to 1975, he was professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi, where he founded the Medical School psychology residency program. Dr. Barlow received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. from Boston College, and his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Psychological Association and is a fellow of the American Psychological Society.

Not Abnormal at all!

I really enjoyed this text. It is similar to other General Psychology texts but goes into more depth about the Abnormal side to it. I had to use it for a class and found it had great information, especially on court cases and laws that deal with various forms of mental illness. It was a good and easy read. Concepts were explained clearly and it comes with a great DVD rom.

Enjoyable read with very nice illustrations and graphics.

This textbook is a very good overview of many forms of mental illness. It's a pleasurable read with good illustrations. The information was timely, up-to-date, and pertinent to contemporary issues and knowledge. I was fortunate enough to have a top-notch professor for this course who knew the text well, so that made the course much more enjoyable. If sociology or psychology is your major and you are planning on entering the field, this is one text you should consider keeping and adding to your personal library. I can gladly rate this textbook with a solid four stars.

Not too Bad Overall

Overall the shipping was great I paid a little extra for expedited but don't think I really needed to now since it came so fast, took about 2 days. Only complaint is the description didn't say it was a PAPERBACK or Instructors addition. I really wish I would have known that because while I think/hope it will work but since I'm a student I needed the student copy and would have preferred hardcopy, and I was disappointed at the amount of used sticker that was placed on the book when it said excellent condition, never used. The inside is perfect and NO highlighting which is awesome. I'm just a little unhappy at the instructors addition and the paperback.

About the Author
Dr. Mays was a Knoxville, Tennessee police officer for five years prior to completing his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Tennessee in 1979. He has previously taught at Appalachian State and East Tennessee State Universities. Dr. Mays has served as a consultant to the Department of Corrections, State Police, Youth Authority, and Association of Counties in New Mexico and to the El Paso, Texas Police Department. From 1981 to 1990, Dr. Mays was head of the New Mexico State University Department of Criminal Justice. His primary areas of research interest are jails, court organization and administration, and juvenile justice.

"Perhaps the chief virtue of the book centers on the fact that chapters seven through 20 cover many of the forms PR writing can take. With undergraduates, I like to have a single textbook from which I can teach. Assigning multiple books to a class does not work well with college sophomores and juniors. The breadth of this book allows me to teach from one text."

About the Author
Doug Newsom, Ph.D., APR and Fellow Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is a Texas Christian University professor emerita of The Schieffer School of Journalism and the senior co-author of THIS IS PR AND PUBLIC RELATIONS WRITING. She also is the co-author of three other books and the author of another two, as well as the author of four current book chapters. She is former member of the Commission on Public Relations Education, former chair of PRSA's College of Fellows and is a past chair of the Accrediting Committee for the Accrediting Council on Education for Journalism and Mass Communications. She has been president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas Public Relations Association, and both the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of PRSA. Dr. Newsom has been national faculty advisor to PRSSA. She has been head of the PR Division of AEJMC and served as chair of its former division heads. Awards include the Institute for Public Relations' Pathfinder, PRSA Outstanding Educator, Public Relations Foundation of Texas's Educator of the Year Award, Texas Public Relations Association's Golden Spur, the Association for Women in Communications Headliner, and in 2010 she was named to the Hall of Excellence of TCU's Schieffer School of Journalism. She has served Fulbright teaching appointments in India and Singapore; given workshops in South Africa, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland and Vanuatu; and taught in Latvia and England. She has been chair of the Fulbright discipline committee, served 18 years on a gas research institute's advisory council and was one of the first women elected to the board of a publicly held company, she was the first woman elected to the board of ONEOK where she served 24 years until reaching mandatory retirement age. Currently, her volunteer public relations work is for Rotary International.

Jim Haynes is the director of research, senior consultant and a member of the Board of Directors of QuickSilver Interactive Group, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. He also is an adjunct professor at UNT, where he teaches public relations writing. Accredited in Public Relations (APR), he is a member of Public Relations Society of America's College of Fellows and is a Certified Records Manager. He served on the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) national Board of Directors and the Universal Accreditation Board, responsible for accreditation for Public Relations Society of America PRSA and eight other participating organizations. Former assistant dean in the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin he taught public relations there and at the University of North Texas, Texas State University-San Marcos, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University. He has spoken at professional conferences and led seminars and workshops throughout the US, Canada, England and Norway. Co-founder of the Public Relations Foundation of Texas, he served as chairman of that organization as well as president of the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA) and the North Texas (now Dallas) Chapter of PRSA. He has received numerous national, state and local awards from public relations organizations, including lifetime membership in TPRA. Through Jim Haynes Consulting, he provides consulting services to clients that have included major corporations throughout the United States, as well as associations, municipalities, state agencies and non-profit organizations in the US, Canada, Norway and Sweden. He worked with the Norwegian Institute of Journalism for 20 years, coordinating a two-week short course for Norwegian newspaper editors at The University of Texas at Austin.

About the Author
Michael J. Palmiotto, PhD, is Professor of Criminal Justice at Wichita State University. He has a master's degree from John Jay College (CUNY) and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Palmiotto has published ten books and numerous book chapters and research articles on policing and criminal justice. He has also lectured internationally.

N. Prabha Unnithan, PhD is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for the Study of Crime and Justice at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He edits the Social Science Journal and recently co-authored Guns, Violence and Criminal Behavior (Boulder, CO: Lynne Rienner Publishing). He has published numerous book chapters and research articles and has lectured internationally on a wide variety of criminal justice and policing topics.

The book is very hard to follow. I feel the material is just dry and it gets very boring to read after a page or two.
