About the Author
Margaret Matlin currently holds the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychology at SUNY Geneseo, where she has taught courses in the Psychology of Women for 36 years. Dr. Matlin has been honored with several major teaching awards, including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, the American Psychological Association Teaching of Psychology Award for four-year institutions, the American Psychological Foundation's Distinguished Teaching in Psychology Award, and the Society for the Psychology of Women's Heritage Award for lifetime contributions to the teaching of the psychology of women. She is currently the Teaching Section Editor for the journal, Psychology of Women Quarterly.

Great Book!

This was my textbook for my Psychology of Women class back in college and it really is a masterpiece. It is well written and completely understandable, full of great examples that you will always remember and that will help you learn the theories and concepts that are presented in it. It has become one of my favorite books and I would not sell it for the world!

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in psychological studies. The author is clearly biased and isn't interested in educating, more like proving her point and justifying her years of studies through a book that begs the readers to accept her point of view. Matlin does bring up many pressing issues but it appears as though she is reaching to make it fit into the realm of psychology. Instead of wasting my time reading this book, she could have written one sentence and I could have gotten the point- "women are more similar to men than what society believes." Not a psychology book at all, don't waste your time.

This book is not what it says it is. "The Sociology of Women" would be more fitting. "An Introduction to Feminism" would be close to apt.

Dr. Matlin is a familiar breed -- the "I know I'm right so I'll tell others anything in order to get them to believe what I already know to be true" breed.

For instance, there is a page with a drawing of a man and a woman, and Matlin encourages you to show the drawings to a child and ask questions like which one of these people is meek and mild and which one is confident. The problem is, the man is drawn with a confident cowboy body posture and the woman with an unsteady hands-behind-the-back meek stance. The book, of course, implies that the child's response would be solely based on culturally impressed gender stereotypes.

When the book does get around to non-feminist thought, it makes no effort to give the guys a fair shake. Rather than mention any of the perfectly reasonable items on the men's movement agenda (e.g. men shouldn't have to pay more for car insurance or be denied a loan based on gender or be forced to pay child support for a child that isn't their's) Matlin quickly glosses over the idea of the men's movement and portrays it as denying the seriousness of wife-beating.

I'm sure there are many more examples and I'm sure there are much more flagrant examples. I'm not going to find them though, because the five-minute scan that revealed everything you see above was enough to convince me not to take the "Psychology of Women" class at my school.

About the Author
V. Mark Durand is known worldwide as an authority in the area of autism spectrum disorders. He is a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where he was the founding Dean of Arts and Sciences and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. Durand is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received over $4 million in federal funding to study the behavior problems in children with disabilities. Previously he served in a variety of leadership positions at the University at Albany, including chair of the psychology department, interim dean of Arts and Sciences, and founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (all in psychology) at the State University of New York Stony Brook. Dr. Durand was awarded the University Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Albany in 1991, and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 2007. Currently a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Autism Society of America, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and has written 10 books as well as over 100 publications on functional communication, educational programming, and behavior therapy. Dr. Durand developed a unique treatment for severe behavior problems that is used worldwide. Most recently he developed an innovative approach (Optimistic Parenting) to help families work with their challenging children.

David H. Barlow is an internationally recognized expert and leader in clinical psychology, having pioneered many treatments and investigations in anxiety and mood disorders. Currently Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Boston University, Dr. Barlow is also founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, one of the largest research clinics of its kind in the world. Previously, he was distinguished professor at State University of New York at Albany. From 1975 to 1979, he was professor of psychiatry and psychology at Brown University, where he also founded the clinical psychology internship program. From 1969 to 1975, he was professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi, where he founded the Medical School psychology residency program. Dr. Barlow received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. from Boston College, and his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Psychological Association and is a fellow of the American Psychological Society.

Good read even outside of class.

This review is for Essentials of Abnormal Psychology in just that blue cover.

I bought it for a college course a year back.

Basically abnormal psychology is a study and compartmentalization of human conditions. Some, like melancholy and depression are common in our culture, others like schizophrenia are not.

It uses clear, well organized english language to describe topics, and regularly gives references to case studies and their results.

It examines groups and populations that have a lot of a given issue, as well as those where its very uncommon. This is done on enough of a scientific basis where I feel it is actually informative, and not stereotypical.

Heavy use of stock fotography is standard for these type of books and make it a more enjoyable read.

I actually took this book on my travels and would read it a few evening a week. I would not do it if the book was not trustworthy, or lacked a concise presentation style.

Overall I recommend this book, and trust that further additions will match this one in quality.

Another topic I recommend to those interested in human psyche is developmental psychology. There the organization of topics is based on age.

About the Author
Rachelle Perusse is an assistant professor and the school counseling coordinator in the counselor education department at Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, NY. She received a Ph.D. in counselor education from Virginia Tech and an M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from The University of Georgia. Dr. Perusse has been a professional school counselor and is a member of several professional associations. She regularly presents at national and regional conferences, and is actively engaged in research about current school counseling issues. Dr. Perusse is a MetLife Fellow with the MetLife Foundation National Counselor Training Initiative, and a member of the executive board of the New York State School Counselor Association.

Gary E. Goodnough is an associate professor and coordinator of the counselor education program at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH. A graduate of the University of Virginia, Dr. Goodnough has worked in public schools as a teacher, school counselor, and director of guidance. A National Certified Counselor since 1992, and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, he also provides direct services to undergraduate students at the Counseling and Human Relations Center at Plymouth State. Dr. Goodnough is a member of the executive board of the New Hampshire School Counselor Association and he publishes and presents regularly on issues related to the school counseling profession.

About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

Christin J. Mamiya received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of California--Los Angeles, and is Professor of Art History at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln. A recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Annis Chaikin Sorensen Award for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities from the University of Nebraska in 2001, Professor Mamiya specializes in the areas of modern, postmodern, and Oceanic art. She has published a book on Pop art, as well as many articles, catalog essays, and book reviews. She is an active participant in the wider community as both a curator and lecturer.

Brief Opinion

The newest edition of this book has some great qualities about it, namely the interactive cd to be utilized as a study aid (the flash card section was beneficial to me), the variety of objects chosen to represent the period/culture have improved, in my opinion, from the other editions as the book has updated archaeological finds. The only disappointing feature I found was in the text itself. The "extra" information boxes including explination of ancient religions and preservation techniques were facinating, but the bulk of text I found to dance around the point. It kept trying to be politically correct, such as changing Venus of Willendorf to Woman of Willendorf. Granted this new take is supposed to account for counter arguments against the purposes of certain objects, but I found that in the attempt to be objective there was a loss of passion for the object and culture itself. I also found that the terminology the book chose to define within the text was unneccessary (vocabulary such as hypostyle hall needs to be defined, not vocab such as carbon dating). However, overall the book holds to the tradition of the series by displaying stunning visual images (all objects are in colour no less!)and the information presented is rather informative, even if the style of writing is "too correct" in some places.

The Old-Soldier of Art History Texts never dies (unfortunately). . . .

Gardners' has long been regarded as the rather stuffy "bible" of art history texts, mainly because of its commercial longevity (it's been around since the 1930s). Recent editions have suffered under recent editorship. The addition of tiresome "clever" subtitles, coupled with the creeping-in of a new shallower "touchy-feelie" approach to the exegesis of the artworks--no doubt intended to perk-up this withering old warhorse--are sad things to behold. Readers are well-advised to select instead the far superior ART HISTORY by MARILYN STOKSTAD. It is everything Gardners' used to be...and more.

Very interesting pictures

I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.

About the Author
Thomas Magstadt earned his doctorate at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is the author NATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS: COMPARATIVE POLITICS IN REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE, Sixth Edition, (Wadsworth Publishing, 2011), and AN EMPIRE IF YOU CAN KEEP IT: POWER AND PRINCIPLE IN AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY (CQ Press, 2004). He has also published numerous journal articles, policy papers, and op-ed pieces, and is a regular contributor to Nation of Change, an on-line daily newspaper. He has chaired political science departments at Augustana College (Sioux Falls) and the University of Nebraska (Kearney), and has taught at the Thunderbird School, the Air War College, and the University of Missouri--Kansas City. In the 1980s, he served for a time as a foreign intelligence analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic from 1994 to 1996. From 2007 to 2010, he lectured on the European Union at the University of Kansas.

Virtually all the world civilization and world history textbooks I have reviewed have about 30 pages per chapter and contain a bewildering amount of detail. They are encyclopedic. Adler's book is much better suited to my survey, which meets three days a week for an hour; students read one chapter per meeting. It's easily manageable and the topic of the day is clear. I can supplement as I want and students are still not overwhelmed by a massive amount of material."

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Randall L. Pouwels earned his B.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in history at UCLA. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the history of Islam in East Africa. His book, HORN AND CRESCENT: CULTURAL CHANGE AND TRADITIONAL ISLAM ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, 800-1900 (Cambridge, 1987), has become a standard work in African history. THE HISTORY OF ISLAM IN AFRICA (Athens, Oxford, and Cape Town, 2000) was jointly edited with Nehemia Levtzion of Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Widely praised in reviews, it was selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2001 and was made a selection of the History Book Club. In addition, he has written numerous articles and reviews on East African history, the history of Islam in Africa, and historical methodologies. His other research interests include the history of the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, and the history and archaeology of Native Americans. Over the years, his work has been supported by grants and fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Studies Research Council, the National Geographic Society, and the American Philosophical Society. He has taught African history for over twenty years at LaTrobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and at UCLA. He has been the Professor of African and Middle Eastern History at the University of Central Arkansas since 1984.

GOOD BOOK!

Yea there is a new edition but my teacher seems to like this one, and in my school (sierra college), the bookstore sells it as if its gold. The 5th edition is not much different my teacher said, there were just more added info.

THis book is great! thanks to the author. It is well explained, understandable, and very intresting facts. It never once bore me. I love reading it. It makes me realize how this world started. OR maybe because of my biases, how the Bible seems to be true. The fact that most civilization pertains to a supreme being or after life; from there, is how culture was made from each civlization or country. THanks authors good job.

It took a while, but i got it. Its in good-enough-standing text book for class. It seems very old, and pretty beat up but its fine with me. It came around few days before the last day they assumed it will arrive. Took a while, but I got it thanks.

Earl Swokowski authored multiple editions of numerous successful textbooks, including CALCULUS; CALCULUS OF A SINGLE VARIABLE; FUNDAMENTALS OF COLLEGE ALGEBRA; and PRECALCULUS: FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS, all published by Cengage Learning Brooks/Cole.

Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

A good book, but you may need outside help or supplementaion

I've just completed this book as part of a correspondence course. I found most of the explanations clear and to the point, but there were places in which the author lost me completely. Much of the theory, which should have clarified the topics under discussion, only gave me more reason to ask, "Why?" The solutions provided in the back of the book only covered the odd-numbered exercises, and there were absolutely no explanations. Techniques of solving problems is the very foundation of the course. I'd like to see more of this included in future editions.

Poor explanations, poor book

This book explains the absolute bare minimum on how to do the problems. Every problem in a set is a curve-ball type, and with only the odd answers, you never feel like you get enough practice, other than re-doing each problem.

(side note)
The solutions manual is absolute garbage, the explanations dwell on the most obvious points, then gloss over things that actually need explanations.Unless you really know this stuff, you will need outside help. It's one of "those" manuals where it tells you the answer and how to start problems, but every solution will have you scratching your head thinking "how did they get from here to there?"

Only the odd problems are solved, so you're better off with just the crappy book, and hope you have a really good instructor.

Yes, this book is great if you want to learn what's behind each equation. In fact the most important thing about this book is to remember these theories and reasons so that you can apply them to many problems. Nice for learning the rules and good examples that illustrate the main ideas.

About the Author
Lawrence S. Cunningham is John A. O'Brien Professor of Theology (Emeritus) at the University of Notre Dame. The author or editor of over 25 books and hundreds of essays and reviews, his books reflect his interest in the history of Christian spirituality, hagiography, the intersection of theology and culture, as well as the relationship of contemplation and action. Cunningham is the recipient of three honorary doctorates and the winner of Notre Dame's Presidential Award for service to academy and church (2002) and the Christus Magister award from the University of Portland in 2011 for distinguished scholarship and teaching. He has served as a visiting lecturer in this country and in Europe, Asia, and South Africa. His most recent academic book is INTRODUCTION TO CATHOLICISM (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and is currently serving as the Christianity editor for the forthcoming NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD RELIGIONS.

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. Reich lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

It seemed like it took a long time to get here.

It didn't get here in time for my class that was starting. It may have been partially my fault in not realizing that it was coming from far away and I may not have allowed for time enough to get here. Good condition, all other aspects as planned.

Good textbook, but watch the volume number

I had to get this textbook for my class. As textbooks go, it's pretty good. I found the material interesting, and it supplemented the dry text with plenty of images. Actually, I was reading it while taking the bus to school, and I got so engrossed I ended up missing my stop! So I suppose that tells you something about it.

Just be sure to mind the volume numbers. I only bought volume one, and it turns out I needed both volumes for my class (and I only found out halfway through the semester, when the pages ran out). Just check your syllabus and order early, and you'll be fine.
