About the Author
A Georgia State faculty member since 1979, Lloyd Nigro is currently professor and chair of the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies at Georgia State University. He previously taught at Syracuse University and the University of Southern California and his primary areas of scholarly research and publication are public-sector human-resources management and policy, administrative ethics, and American political thought and administration. He has published numerous articles in these areas and is co-author of THE NEW PUBLIC PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION, a widely used textbook. Currently his research interests are focused on state and local government civil service reform in the United States. Nigro's research has been published in Public Administration Review, International Journal of Public Administration, Journal of Management History, Administration and Society, Public Productivity Management Review, Policy Studies Journal and Review of Public Personnel Administration.

J. Edward Kellough is Professor and Head of the Department of Public Administration and Policy at the University of Georgia. His major area of academic interest is public personnel administration/human resources management. His research has addressed such topics as equal employment opportunity and affirmative action, representative bureaucracy, reinventing government, and civil service reform. Some of his other recent works include UNDERSTANDING AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: POLITICS, DISCRIMINATION, AND THE SEARCH FOR JUSTICE (Georgetown University Press, 2006); and CIVIL SERVICE REFORM IN THE STATES: PERSONNEL POLICY AND POLITICS AT THE SUB-NATIONAL LEVEL, co-edited with Lloyd G. Nigro (SUNY Press, 2006). He has also published numerous articles in scholarly journals.

An Exhaustive Collection of Public Personnel Issues

I recently read this book for a Ph.D. course, I found it to be quite exhaustive in coverage. From the beginnings of the public sector and the issues of spoils and patronage to the current issues of pay for performance, sexual harrassment and current public work trends, this book covers a great deal of subjects. Perhaps the most notable is the writers' ability to combine historical personnel issues with relative theories to argue current problems and situations. The second full reading really helped to clarify the book's thoughtful issues.

About the Author
Samuel Walker is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, where he taught for 31 years before retiring in 2005. He is the author of 13 books on policing, criminal justice history and policy, and civil liberties. His current research involves police accountability, focusing primarily on citizen oversight of the police and police Early Intervention Systems (EIS) systems. Originally trained as a historian, he is completing a book on U.S. presidents and civil liberties. His personal web site, with information on police accountability is http://samuewalker.net.

Cassia Spohn is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. She has published extensively on prosecutors' charging decisions in sexual assault cases, the effect of race, ethnicity, and gender on sentencing decisions, sentencing of drug offenders, and the deterrent effect of imprisonment. She is currently conducting a National Institute of Justice-funded study of police and prosecutorial decision making in sexual assault cases in Los Angeles.

Miriam DeLone's research interests include political economy and social control; race, ethnicity, gender and sentencing; and corrections. Her teaching interests are in the area of minorities and crime; criminology; corrections; law and social control; nature of crime; and administration of justice.

Leslie Alexander is a professor at the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College. Her major areas of research include client-worker relationships and ethical issues in implementing research in community-based settings. She has served on a number of editorial boards, is a frequent reviewer for scholarly journals, and has been funded by both NIMH and private foundations.

Phyllis Solomon, Ph.D., is a professor of social work who teaches in the area of research. She was the Director of a National Institute of Mental Health social work research development center; and currently serves on numerous mental health, psychiatric, and social work journal editorial boards. She is also the Principal investigator of an evaluation of PRIME (Partners Reaching to Improve Multicultural Effectiveness) which is funded by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration.

About the Author
William A. Haviland is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for 32 years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He has carried out original research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of numerous publications in national and international books and journals, as well as in media intended for the general public. His books include The Original Vermonters, coauthored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He also served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse Faces of Culture, and he is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Besides teaching and writing, Dr. Haviland has lectured to many professional and nonprofessional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. He served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont in an important court case over aboriginal fishing rights. Dr. Haviland was named University Scholar by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine. He serves as a trustee for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, focused on Maine's Native American history, culture, art, and archaeology. His most recent books are At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009) and Canoe Indians of Down East Maine (2012).

Harald E.L. Prins is a University Distinguished Professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University. Academically trained at half a dozen Dutch and U.S. universities, he previously taught at Radboud University (Netherlands), as well as Bowdoin College and Colby College in Maine, and was a visiting professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. Named a Distinguished University Teaching Scholar, he received numerous honors for his outstanding academic teaching, including the Presidential Award in 1999, Carnegie Professor of the Year for Kansas in 2006, and the AAA/Oxford University Press Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology in 2010. His fieldwork focuses on indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere, and he has long served as an advocacy anthropologist on land claims and other native rights. In that capacity, Dr. Prins has been a key expert witness in both the U.S. Senate and Canadian courts. His numerous academic publications appear in seven languages, and his books include The Mi'kmaq: Resistance, Accommodation, and Cultural Survival. Also trained in filmmaking, he was president of the Society for Visual Anthropology, and coproduced award-winning documentaries. He has been the visual anthropology editor of American Anthropologist, co-principal investigator for the U.S. National Park Service, international observer in Paraguay's presidential elections, and a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Dana Walrath, an award-winning writer, artist and anthropologist, is a faculty member of University of Vermont's College of Medicine. After earning her PhD in medical and biological anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught there and at Temple University. Dr. Walrath broke new ground in paleoanthropology through her work on the evolution of human childbirth. She has also written on a wide range of topics related to gender in paleoanthropology, the social production of sickness and health, sex differences, genetics, and evolutionary medicine. Her work has appeared in edited volumes and in journals such as Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Anthropology Now. Her books include Aliceheimer's, a graphic memoir, and Like Water on Stone, a verse novel. She developed a novel curriculum in medical education at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine that brings humanism, anthropological theory and practice, narrative medicine, and professionalism skills to first-year medical students. Dr. Walrath also has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has exhibited her artwork in North America and Europe. Her recent work in the field of graphic medicine combines anthropology with memoir and visual art. Spanning a variety of disciplines, her work has been supported by diverse sources such as the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Vermont Studio Center, the Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She spent 2012-2013 as a Fulbright Scholar at the American University of Armenia and the Institute of Ethnography and Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. She is working on a second graphic memoir that combines her Aliceheimer's work with her fieldwork on aging and memory in Armenia.

Bunny McBride is an award-winning author specializing in cultural anthropology, indigenous peoples, international tourism, and nature conservation issues. Published in dozens of national and international print media, she has reported from Africa, Europe, China, and the Indian Ocean. Holding an MA from Columbia University, she is highly rated as a teacher, and she has served as visiting anthropology faculty at Principia College and the Salt Institute for Documentary Field Studies. Since 1996, she has been an adjunct lecturer of anthropology at Kansas State University. Among her many publications are books such as Women of the Dawn; Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris; Indians in Eden (with Harald Prins); and The Audubon Field Guide to African Wildlife, which she coauthored. McBride also has authored numerous book chapters. Honors include a special commendation from the state legislature of Maine for significant contributions to Native women's history. As an activist and researcher for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs (1981-1991), she assisted this Maine Indian community in its successful efforts to reclaim lands, gain tribal status, and revitalize cultural traditions. In recent years, she has served as co-principal investigator for a National Park Service ethnography project and curated several museum exhibits, including "Journeys West: The David & Peggy Rockefeller American Indian Art Collection" for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her latest exhibit, "Indians & Rusticators," received a 2012 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History. Currently, she serves as president of the Women's World Summit Foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is completing a collection of essays.

I don't know why the other reviews are so critical

I bought this because it is needed for my Cultural Anthropology class and it's a pretty smooth read. It has a definate liberal bias but no more than any other college book I've had to buy, if anything it's a bit less liberal bias than some of the books I've had to suffer through.

It's topics are very interesting and in most places the authors at least try to be neutral. The really good part of the book is not the part the instructors normally assign but the stuff in the yellow boxes which are almost like reading stories.

A Good Introductory Text

This is one of the better anthropology texts available today. It is very comprehensive, well-organized, and takes a very broad view of the human condition. The problem with textbooks is that they sometimes summarize issues as if they were settled questions, when, in reality, many of the problems involved are the subjects of complex debate. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since the majority of undergraduate students are not interested in primary sources that are very difficult to read and take a lot of work to understand. As an instructor I found the book to be very good as a basic resource that allowed me to teach my perspective of the discipline to students using supplementary materials and lectures. The major drawback is that it is so expensive, but not more so than other textbooks out there.

Here is what one of my very good students said about the book, "I found it to be well-organized, thorough, and easy to understand. I have never taken a class in this subject before, so I have nothing to compare it to, but as far as I can tell it is a useful text. I had one other cultural anthropology class this term and I was able to use the textbook from your class as a reference from time to time. I chose anthropology as my minor, and so for further reference purposes I have kept the text from your class."

Students who have strong political views (right or left) will say this book is "biased" since it does not claim that Western civilization, Christianity, or American culture are superior or inferior to other cultures. The book, for example, teaches that ethnocentrism, racism, economic exploitation, colonialism, and polluting the environment are generally not good things-- but these evils are not new to the world or authored by any one particular culture. Those who don't like the idea of multiculturalism will not like the book.

Robert B. Denhardt is Professor and Director of Leadership Development in the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, Regents Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, and Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Delaware. A past president of the American Society for Public Administration and a member of the National Academy of Public Administration, Dr. Denhardt has published twenty-two books, including THE DANCE OF LEADERSHIP, THE NEW PUBLIC SERVICE, MANAGING HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN PUBLIC AND NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, THEORIES OF PUBLIC ORGANIZATION, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION: AN ACTION ORIENTATION, IN THE SHADOW OF ORGANIZATION, and THE PURSUIT OF SIGNIFICANCE.

Janet V. Denhardt is the Chester A. Newland Professor of Public Administration in the Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. About the Author
Jeff Todd Titon received his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota, where he studied ethnomusicology with Alan Kagan and musicology with Johannes Riedel. He has completed fieldwork in North America on religious folk music, blues music and old-time fiddling with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. For two years he was the guitarist in the Lazy Bill Lucas Blues Band, a group that appeared in the 1970 Ann Arbor Blues Festival. The author or editor of seven books, including EARLY DOWNHOME BLUES (which won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award) and the five-volume AMERICAN MUSICAL TRADITIONS (named by Library Journal as one of the outstanding reference works of 2003), Titon is also a documentary photographer and filmmaker. In 1991, he wrote a hypertext multimedia computer program about old-time fiddler Clyde Davenport that is regarded as a model for interactive representations of people making music. He founded the ethnomusicology program at Tufts University, where he taught from 1971 to 1986. From 1990 to 1995, he served as the editor of ETHNOMUSICOLOGY, the journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology. A Fellow of the American Folklore Society since 1986, he has been Professor of Music and the director of the Ph.D. program in ethnomusicology at Brown University.

Linda Fujie received the Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Columbia University, where she was a student of Dieter Christensen and Adelaida Schramm. She conducted field research in Japan, mainly concerning urban festival and popular music, under grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Columbia University, and Colby College. Her interest in overseas Japanese culture also resulted in research on Japanese-American and Japanese-Brazilian communities, the latter funded by the German Music Council. Her research has been published in the Yearbook for Traditional Music, in publications on popular music, and in Japanese journals. She taught at Colby College as Assistant Professor, at the East Asian Institute of the Free University of Berlin and lectured on ethnomusicology at the University of Bamberg.

David Locke received the Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in 1978, where he studied with David McAllester, Mark Slobin, and Gen'ichi Tsuge. At Wesleyan his teachers of traditional African music included Abraham Adzinyah and Freeman Donkor. From 1975 to 1977, he conducted doctoral dissertation fieldwork in Ghana under the supervision of Professor J.H.K. Nketia. In Ghana his teachers and research associates included Godwin Agbeli, Midawo Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, and Abubakari Lunna. He has published numerous books and articles on African music and regularly performs the repertories of music and dance about which he writes. He teaches at Tufts University, where he currently serves as the director of the master's degree program in ethnomusicology and as a faculty advisor in the Tufts-in-Ghana Foreign Study Program. His current projects include an oral history and musical documentation of dance-drumming of the Dagbamba people and an in-depth musical documentation of Agbadza, an idiom of Ewe music, in collaboration with Professor Gideon Foli Alorwoyie. He is active in the Society for Ethnomusicology and has served as the president of its Northeast Chapter.

David P. McAllester received the Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University, where he studied with George Herzog. A student of American Indian music since 1938, he undertook fieldwork among the Comanches, Hopis, Apaches, Navajos, Penobscots, and Passamaquoddies. He was the author of such classic works in ethnomusicology as Peyote Music, Enemy Way Music, Myth of the Great Star Chant, and Navajo Blessingway Singer (with coauthor Charlotte Frisbie). He was one of the founders of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and he served as its president and the editor of its journal, Ethnomusicology. Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Music at Wesleyan University, he passed away in 2006.

David B. Reck received the Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University, where he studied under Mark Slobin and David P. McAllester. With grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Arts Foundation, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and others, he traveled extensively in India, Mexico, and Southeast and East Asia. AA senior disciple of the legendary master musician, Mme. Ranganayaki Rajagopalan, he is an accomplished veena player and has performed widely in India, Europe, and the Americas. As a composer in the 1960s and 1970s, his works were performed at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Tanglewood, and at numerous international new music festivals. His publications include MUSIC OF THE WHOLE EARTH, chapters in IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY and articles in THE GARLAND ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD MUSIC. He also has published articles on aspects of India's music, the Beatles, J.S. Bach, and cross-influences between the West and the Orient. He and his wife, photographer Carol Reck, live in Chennai. Currently he is Professor Emeritus of Asian Languages and Civilizations, and of Music, at Amherst College.

Good book for your Music Class

I have enjoyed this book a lot. It really goes into the world's music cultures in detail. The CD that comes with the book has some very interesting listens on it.

Overall, an interesting book if you have to get it for your World Music class, as I did.

Expensive, yet very useful

I don't mean to take the same words of the reviewer Nicholas H. Canale, but he's right. Worlds of Music is an excellent book containing two CDs to introduce you to the music of the world and its relation to the culture the music is found in.

The book contains an introduction which explains musical terms to non-musical people. From there, you're on your own to understand the how these terms apply to odd music cultures. Hopefully you will have a great professor or musically-inclined friend to help you out. Nevertheless, the authors all have Ph.D's in ethnomusicology (or a similar subject) and are very good at presenting information.

The book does indeed cost a pretty penny, but its well worth it. Then again, worth doesn't mean much if you're taking a 'World Music' class at college and don't have a choice. Even still, the situation isn't bleak - the audio examples are great, and you're bound to enjoy at least one foreign music you never considered worth your time before reading Worlds of Music.

About the Author
Jo Sprague is Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at San Jose State University, where she also served as associate director of the Center for Faculty Development and Support. In addition, she is a former president of the Western States Communication Association. Her research focuses on critiquing, teaching, and the scholarship of speech communications.

Douglas Stuart is Vice President of Technical and Marketing Publications at FirstTel Systems Corporation.
