About the Author
Rodney Stark is a renowned scholar and researcher, and is recognized as one of the foremost sociologists working in the field of sociology of religion. Professor Stark has published more than 140 articles and 27 scholarly books that have won numerous awards and acknowledgements, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination. This book was just what I needed for my class. It was cheap although shipping cost more than the book itself. But I was surprised to find no marks in the book which made it easier for me to read. The book was in great condition, with no bent edges or missing pages. It was delivered with in the time frame stated on the web site.

About the Author
Frederick J Gravetter is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The College at Brockport, State University of New York College. While teaching at Brockport, he specialized in statistics, research design, and cognitive psychology. Dr. Gravetter received his Bachelor's degree in mathematics from M.I.T. and his Ph.D. in psychology from Duke University. In addition to publishing several research articles, Dr. Gravetter is co-author of the best-selling STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 9th Edition, ESSENTIALS OF STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 8th Edition, and (with Lori-Ann B. Forzano) RESEARCH METHODS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 5th Edition.

Larry B. Wallnau is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the State University of New York College at Brockport. The recipient of grants and awards in both research and teaching, Dr. Wallnau has published numerous research articles primarily on the effect of psychotropic drugs. With Frederick J Gravetter, he has co-authored previous editions of STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, now in its tenth edition, and ESSENTIALS OF STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, now in its eighth edition.

Not to bad

Good book but lacks examples. More importantly, it lacks the instructions for calculator steps to perform the functions. I had a friend that was taken the same class from different school. Her book was different and it showed the steps for properly using a graphing calculator for functions. I was very jealous.

some typos and errors in the chapters and answers in the back, but overall this was a very good book to study from. the author has done a good job explaining concepts, and is good for someone to start statistics with, as I started this book with absolutely no idea what statistics even started with.

About the Author
Born in New York City, Philip V. Cannistraro is an authority on modern Italian history and the Italian-American experience. He studied in both the undergraduate and graduate programs at New York University and is now Distinguished Professor at Queens College and at the Graduate School, the City University of New York. Professor Cannistraro serves on the boards of several journals and is editor of THE ITALIAN AMERICAN REVIEW. He has written or edited a number of books, including CIVILIZATION OF THE WORLD (with R. Greaves, R. Murphey, and R. Zaller, 3/e., 1997), LA FABBRICA DEL CONSENSO: FASCISMO E MASS MEDIA (1975), FASCISMO, CHIESA E EMIGRAZIONE with G. Rosoli, 1979), HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF FASCIST ITALY (1981), and IL DUCE'S OTHER WOMAN, a biography of Margherita Sarfatti (with B. Sullivan, 1993).

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. Reich lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

About the Author
Dr. Lori Russell-Chapin was the chair of the graduate counseling program for 11 years at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. She is currently the Associate Dean of the College of Education and Health Sciences at Bradley and the co-director of the Center for Collaborative Brain Research. She continues to teach practicum and internship, crisis intervention, introduction to the profession, and neurofeedback and ethics courses. Dr. Russell-Chapin works in private practice with her husband, Ted, and has been a clinical supervisor for many years. She is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, a NBCC Approved Clinical Supervisor and a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor. An award-winning teacher at Bradley with numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, books, and creative productions, Dr. Russell-Chapin and Dr. Allen Ivey are the co-authors of Your Supervised Practicum and Internship: Field Resources for Turning Theory into Practice.

Allen E. Ivey is Distinguished University Professor (emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Courtesy Professor of Counseling at the University of South Florida, Tampa. He is president of Microtraining Associates, an educational publishing firm. A diplomate in counseling psychology, Dr. Ivey was honored as a Multicultural Elder at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit. He has written more than 40 books and 200 articles and chapters, translated into 25 languages. Dr. Ivey's undergraduate work was in psychology at Stanford University, followed by a Fulbright Grant to study social work at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His doctorate is from Harvard University. He is the originator of the Microskills approach, basic to this book.

Excellent Introductory Text with Global Relevance

Excellent fusion of the historical development of the social work profession, important HBSE models influencing practice, and key social work values. Social issues are discussed in a global context, distinguishing this from many other introductory texts. References are meticulously documented at the end of each chapter and are from a variety of credible quantitative and qualitative sources. Overall, this text is a globally-relevant, timely work that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the American social work profession and the larger world.

This author offers a thorough explanation of social work and global implications. The content of information is current and relevant to the vast aspects of social work on a local and global scale. I especially appreciated the personal narratives included throughout the text which give facts and figures a face. I am also grateful for the expertise and experience of the author which allows her to pull from her own personal experiences from around the world. So oft times books are written by those who have only read of experiences themselves, but this is not so of this author. From those just entering the field of social work, to those whose professions require an informed world view, Introduction to Social Welfare and Social Work: The U.S. in Global Perspective will inform, inlighten, and enspire.

An EXCELLENT primer to philosophy, designed to be down-to-earth and easy to understand for everyday morons like myself. n_n
For starters, Soccio has included biographies of philosophers, countless numbers of quotes, illustrations (to further define the subjects), commentaries, summaries, internet resources, a collection of stories, cultural variety, and flexible structure.
The first chapter answers many critical questions hte beginner may have: Is objectivity possible? Does might make right? Is there one standard of right and wrong for everyone, or are moral standards relative? "Is it possible to justify the study of philosophy considering the urgent needs of such overwhelming contemporary problems such as world hunger?" The six branches are explained away in a nutshell in the behinning chapter, then elaborated throughout the rest of the book.
What I like best about Soccio's style of writing is his fair treatment of every single nook and cranny of the philosophical world. No bible-beating hellfire, or condescending arrogance! Yay!

A stellar and thorough intro. Great for college.

As a textbook, I think this is an impressive accomplishment. I enjoy it partly because Soccio is encouraging rather than patronizing. He does his best to write with clear, terse language rather than using stilted, esoteric prose.

Soccio has organized the commentary, biographical information and analyses very well in this beautiful tome.

As with all text instructions, it's necessary to have an credible instructor to answer any questions left after reviewing the chapters. This book has always prepared me well enough for lectures and discussions to be confident in my classroom musings.

The accompanying CD-ROM is very useful, containing a number or primary documents from select philosphers. It's crucial to read the original author's treatise to be aware of the value of the interpretation of the textbook's evaluations.

The structure and layout is gentle on the eye and the reading flow is easy with engaging content. It's a high-quality compilation and explanation of some of the most interesting questions and persons of the philosophical world.

Don't forget to visit the Wadsworth website to take online quizzes, print out chapter glosseries and practice essays. It's helpful.

As an ancillary text, my class used Readings From the Roots of Wisdom, which covers important philosophical writings from multinational writers, cultural minorities (including women) and more modern thinkers.

With both these texts, you will survey a wonderful collection of work. You can really get a cerebral orgasm from this stuff, if it interests you enough. My rating is 4.6

A Must!

Having first read Archetypes of Wisdom (an older version) back in my first year or so of college, I eagerly awaited revisions to the book I fell in love with. Soccio did not disappoint. The newest edition of Archetypes of Wisdom is its best yet and I strongly encourage anyone interested in philosophy to give this book a read.

Ideas are presented in a clear cut manner as is the biographies of key philosophers throughout the ages as well as the background history of the time periods in which these philosophers lived.
