Great teaching tool
By Kimberly
This book is required reading for my general psychology students. Complex issues in behavioral science are presented in a clear, almost conversational manner, through discussion of apt examples like MPD and false memories, Clever Hans, crop circles, claims of alien abductions, conspiracy theories, and homeopathic medicine. The chapters are short (10-15 pgs.) and can be related to the intro psych text book chapters, thus it is fairly easy to integrate the material into the syllabus. For example, Ch. 4 covers the need to evaluate appeals to authority and expertise, in part by walking the reader through Milgram's obedience research and explaining the results, which makes it a good companion for the text book chapter on social psychology. Most students find the book compelling and thought provoking, and class discussions are lively and fun for me and for them. At semester's end, students are equipped with knowledge and thinking skills that will help them to sort science from pseudoscience, spot fallacious reasoning and bias in themselves and others, and examine correlations and claims of causation critically.

Borderline boring and extremely simplistic-a little hypocritical
By Thames River Arms
This book was with at least well laid out and somewhat cohesive, but I found it to be an extremely simple book in general. Most of the arguments made were obvious arguments that even the average person who has very little experience in psychology or even life in general could figure out for themselves. Anyone who purchased this book to fill a requirement in college is probably already smart enough to figure out about 90% of what the author is saying on their own.

I also found that the author contradicted himself numerous times by attempting to apply critical thinking skills to his pet peeve subjects but just arbitrarily discard those critical thinking tactics on the subjects that he clearly has no issues with. I don't care how you argue for a particular subject but at least stay consistent. He stresses how important peer-review is while completely ignoring the fact that many great scientists were laughed at for the majority of their career while being right, and many great scientists were accepted as geniuses when history has proven that not only were they wrong, but dead wrong.

Critical thinking usually boils down to taking the time to think things through while leaving emotions outs of the thought process. Remove any preconceived ideas or generalizations and look at the facts as well as you know them, question everything and come to your own conclusion. I found this book borderline boring and thought it would be more applicable for a middle school curriculum.

I'm not saying he did anything particularly wrong on purpose, it just seems as though either on his own or to meet a requirement he had to write a 400 page document about critical thinking and busted it out as quick as he could. Some of his examples were so basic and rudimentary but I honestly thought he was joking at times. One disturbing thing that I noticed is that he clearly has a list of things that he doesn't believe in. He occasionally mocks these subjects and applies his "critical thinking techniques" to the subjects yet doesn't apply these techniques to the subjects he apparently agrees with.

I am not going to get into the specifics because if you read this book you can draw your own conclusions. I am simply saying that if you're planning on actually learning anything from this book, you may be disappointed.

Presenting the methods of social science research within the context of human service practice, the Sixth Edition of APPLIED SOCIAL RESEARCH serves as an excellent text for courses emphasizing applied research in human services, counseling, social work, sociology, criminal justice, and community planning. In this revised edition, the authors show research and human service practice as allies bound by common goals of advancing knowledge and creating a better world. Covering the full range of topics included in traditional social science research methods courses, the book devotes considerable attention to both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Used at the undergraduate and graduate levels, this popular text explores the growing diversity of ways in which research is applied to practice and the extensive links between research and practice.

Review
"… this text facilitates students learning the research process. It simplifies the material for students' understanding, especially those who have negative preconceived notions of the research course. It integrates the CSWE themes (i.e. special populations) and the values and ethics of the profession to research. The use of examples from the field of human services facilitates the understanding of the role of research in social work."

"The text is comprehensive and clearly written. I appreciate the structure to each chapter: The intent of the chapter, bold print for words appearing in the glossary, attention to computers in research and practice research vignettes, recommended readings and activities."

A good practical guide for social research
By Masaki Matsumura
One of the good things about this book is that it contains many useful charts and diagrams. For example, the procedure of making guttman scales is explained in an easily understandable manner with example charts. Suggestions for further readings also contain many useful and recent materials. As a practical guide for social research, I recommend this book, because it is reader-friendly and does not require a lot of reading; everything needed is found at a glance.

Since Socrates: A Concise Source Book of Classic Readings, by Robert C. Solomon, Clancy Martin

This historically organized anthology, co-edited by one of contemporary philosophy's most noted scholars and teachers, Robert C. Solomon, provides philosophy students with a carefully edited collection of classical sources drawn from the history of philosophy. Unlike other historical anthologies, SINCE SOCRATES is designed as a concise source book, readily managed in the course of a semester with substantial yet manageable readings from original texts in translation. Beginning with selections from Pre-Socratic sources--both Eastern and Western--and moving through representative Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and 20th century readings, students are introduced to the wide range of ideas and styles that compose philosophy's historical cannon. The aim of the book is to provide both some contact with the great historical texts in philosophy and central topics for philosophical discussion. The readings are centered on three critical questions, ethics and the quest for the good life, truth and the problem of knowledge, and the existence of God.

This is a must for the scientifically curious.
By Charles A. Schuler
I have been remiss in not expressing my views about this book in a more timely fashion. I read it some time ago and am now reading it again ... as prompted by "A Briefer History of Time" by Stephen Hawking. Hawking's work reminded me that the cleavages among science and religion and philosophy cannot be fully appreciated by only reading books written by scientists. If you are a science reader, as I am, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Shallow at best
By Frank
This might be a good "primer" for those interested in a quick survey/overview of lots of topics. For those with some experience, it probably won't seem insightful -- or even useful. I've already given my copy away. It just doesn't add knowledge, or anything else, that will make a practicing visual artist's work better or help her/him evolve it.

Good book, misleading condition from seller.
By Ten
The content of the book itself is good and very useful for my Visual Communication course. The language and diction is straightforward. Very useful for analyzing various images and videos. However this seller listed it as "used but in nice shape" when it was clearly not.

Theories of Human Communication
By A Customer
It is a very intense book on multiple communication theories. Also a very good book if a person is studying in the communications field. Although, the overviews of each theory is brief, it makes room for most communication theories in the field. (For more in-depth information on some theories, you would want to consult a Communications Journal.)

For all Humanities Writers
By Megan Warren
This book really helped me in my advanced college writing class. It serves as a great reference for all sorts of writing. I really liked reading the in-depth descriptions of how to go about writing a research paper, an analysis paper, and more. It provides great outlines and sample essays to look at (this was the best part); something that helps me get going on the writing process. Another great thing about this book is that it addresses the specific areas in the humanities, so there's something for everyone. Also, in the back, there's a really useful handbook that addresses things like word choice, sentence structure, and punctuation; that makes for a great resource. My one complaint about the book would be that sometimes it provides samples that are wrong, and does not show the correct way of going about things. For example, on page 50, the book lists faulty analytical statements and then addresses what is wrong with them. I would have liked to have seen not only what is wrong, but also an example of how to make it right. That said, this is a great book for writing students in the humanities.

By M. Little
This book is a good book for beginning writers. It has very clear explanations of structure for research, analysis and argument papers. It provides proofs of good and bad theses, explanations of terms for writing and full essay examples of many different types of essays. It talks about ways to analyze the humanities and to write about them in a formulaic, concise way. This book is good for the beginniner because it provides such a clear structure and examples. For the advanced writer, it can be frustrating because it is so rigid in its structure and the examples are not always allowing of exceptions.
I felt a little frustrated because the book does not provide many options for structure and different methods of writing. It is a great reference for someone who needs clear structure, never having written before. But for the more experienced writer who is able to create a structue that does not necessarily follow the book, the book becomes uphelpful. Good for reference. The only other thing lacking examples of citations in MLA and ADA format, especially internet sources.

A Basic Guide
By S. Elsey
This book was a fairly good reference, and would be especially useful for beginning writers who have little or no experience writing about the arts. It gives detailed descriptions of research, analysis, and argument papers, complete with student examples and thorough explanations. It also gives numerous examples of good/bad theses and strong/weak structures, although the abundance of poor examples is a bit tedious because most fallacies are obvious. A more advanced writer should not feel bound by the strict structure that the book emphasizes either. It is a good idea to flip through the examples and notes for a springboard prior to writing a draft or two, but it is by no means the Bible, and students may get too caught up in following the designated formula. Overall, it was useful for viewing examples of assignments and learning from other student`s accomplishments and mistakes. I have not viewed other books designed specifically for writing about the arts, but this book is comprehensible and serves its purpose.
