About the Author
Karen M. Sowers is Dean of the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. Her expertise and research interests include juvenile justice, sexuality, social work education, child welfare, best practices in mental health, evidence-based practices, and international social work. Dr. Sowers is the author or co-author of numerous books, book chapters and journal articles. In addition to this text, Dr. Sowers has co-authored another Brooks/Cole text, Juvenile Justice Practice.

William S. Rowe is the Director of the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida. His research interests include HIV/AIDS, harm reduction, child welfare, and international social work. Dr. Rowe has written numerous journal articles and books.

Good Introduction Book

I use this book in the classroom with undergraduate students for an introduction to social welfare class. Beginning with the profession of social work, the authors then explore major concepts like poverty as well as vulnerable populations to include elders, children, women, people with disabilities, etc. Simple to read, but complete with concepts, this book provides both an ethical and human rights framework to the discourse with important examples. Organizations dedicated to specific social problems and vulnerable people are also presented to further underscore the ways in which problems are being addressed. In sum, this is a good introduction book with a global perspective on well-being and some of the pressing problems of concern to social workers today.

Not just a textbook

Arrived quickly and in good condition. The book had no signs of damage, looks as if it hasn't been used more than a few times, if that. Actually a surprisingly interesting book for a textbook. I ordered it for a class but I recommend it to anyone in the field who just wants to learn a little bit more about this aspect of social work. Has a great variety of examples, doesn't focus too much on any one issue. Maybe it's because its my field of study, but its definitely the best textbook I have, I actually have been reading the chapters that aren't assigned to me as well.

About the Author
John M. Murrin studies American colonial and revolutionary history and the early republic. He has edited one multivolume series and five books, including two essay collections?COLONIAL AMERICA: ESSAYS IN POLITICS AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, Sixth Edition (2010), and SAINTS AND REVOLUTIONARIES: ESSAYS IN EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY (1984). His own essays cover topics ranging from ethnic tensions, the early history of trial by jury, the emergence of the legal profession, the Salem witch trials, and the political culture of the colonies and the new nation to the rise of professional baseball and college football in the nineteenth century. He served as president of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic in 1998?1999.

A specialist in early national social history, Paul E. Johnson is the author of THE EARLY AMERICAN REPUBLIC, 1789-1829 (2006); SAM PATCH, THE FAMOUS JUMPER (2003); and A SHOPKEEPER'S MILLENNIUM: SOCIETY AND REVIVALS IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, 1815-1837, 25th Anniversary Edition (2004). James M. McPherson is a distinguished Civil War historian. He won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for his book BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM: THE CIVIL WAR ERA. Professor McPherson served as president of the American Historical Association (2003-2004).

Gary Gerstle is the Paul Mellon Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge. He previously taught at Princeton University, the Catholic University of America, the University of Maryland, and Vanderbilt University. A historian of the twentieth-century United States, he is the author, coauthor, and coeditor of six books and the author of nearly 35 articles. His books include WORKING-CLASS AMERICANISM: THE POLITICS OF LABOR IN A TEXTILE CITY, 1914-1960 (1989); AMERICAN CRUCIBLE: RACE AND NATION IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (2001), winner of the Saloutos Prize for the best work in immigration and ethnic history; THE RISE AND FALL OF THE NEW DEAL ORDER, 1930-1980 (1989); and RULING AMERICA: WEALTH AND POWER IN A DEMOCRACY (2005). A new book on the principles underlying the use of public power in America from the Revolution to the present will soon be published by Princeton University Press. In reference to the other reviewers, the complaints here don't seem to address the actual content of the book - $95 is expensive for a paperback, but that's why the same book can be found for $20 under Used&New.

ANYWAY, I'm a high school student who ordered this for use in my AP United States History course this fall. The book is clearly laid out, the prose is engaging, and the parts that I have read so far are comparable to(and in some instances this one surpasses) Alan Brinkley's "American History: A Survey", which is ranked far better. I'll probably drop another review next year after the AP exam, but it seems to be clear and concise, and the resources on the CD-rom are invaluable.

I am a great student at college who loves school and I had to take a mandatory history class. I'm not good at history and do not like it but since I wanted a good grade in the class I had to read this book. This book was confusing to me and was not in a logical order. It kept jumping around from topic to topic in the first part of the book. It was too wordy and did not get to the important facts.

About the Author
Michael Sipser has taught theoretical computer science and mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the past 32 years. He is a Professor of Applied Mathematics, a member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), and the current head of the mathematics department. He enjoys teaching and pondering the many mysteries of complexity theory.

Theory for the Rest of Us

Finally, a clearly-written, concise, and thorough introduction to the essentials of the theory of computation. Beautifully designed, written, and illustrated, this book fills a long-standing need, acutely felt by students forced to use dense reference books (like Hopcroft and Ullman) in order to learn the material. Focusing on essential areas (regular and context-free languages, the Church-Turing Thesis, NP-Complete problems) and dropping deadwood (context-sensitive languages, index languages), this book efficiently guides readers through the material that they need to know, without getting bogged down in irrelevant details. The "Proof Idea" concept is especially refreshing, helping students focus on the meat of a proof, rather than the irrelevant details. I highly recommend this book to teachers, students, and anyone else interested getting a fundamental background in the theory of computation.

An EXCELLENT Automata/Theory of Computation book

This book is one of the best written books on Automata/Theory of Computation that I have ever seen. It is a great introduction to the subject. It's also a great way to review the key topics.
One of the greatest things about this book is its focus on developing an intuitive understanding of the concepts and proofs. Other books do a better job of formal proofs but this book is light years ahead of any other in terms of helping you develop an intuitive understanding of why a given proof or construction is correct. It's a lot better than the memorize/regurgitate model necessitated by the emphasis on minutiae of other books.
Lastly, this book provides great tips on how to approach problem solving (especially proofs).

The best!

I had this book in a computer theory course and I looked up similar books in the library looking for extra help and different perspectives. They were all horrible in comparison! No book can make this topic as easy as something hands-on like programming, but this one does the best I can imagine. The proofs are preceded by a "proof idea" that outlines what's going on before you get into the rigorous details. The writing is fluid and discusses the implications of the theorems and why they're important. This gives the reader an appreciation of the topic, which is a rare thing in something this arcane. Even if your course doesn't use this book, I recommend buying it as a supplement. I expect it to become a classic in the field.

Disappointing Database

I purchased this software because not only was it recommended by my school but because a fellow nutrition student recommended it. It has wonderful features for charting and graphing nutrient intakes, but its database is sorely lacking. I would expect that they would have included at least what is readily available in the USDA Nutrient Database, but the software doesn't even come close. For those who eat mostly whole foods, the software is practically useless, especially since it only allows the user to add up to thirty of his or her own entries into the database. All the charts and graphs in the world won't help if they don't accurately reflect what I've eaten! One would be better off using the free, online software at the USDA's website: [...]

About the Author
Julia T. Wood is the Lineberger Professor of Humanities and a professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she teaches courses and conducts research on gender, communication, culture, and communication in personal relationships. Dr. Wood has authored 15 books and edited 10 others. In addition, she has published more than 80 articles and book chapters, and she has won nine awards for undergraduate teaching. She received her B.A. from North Carolina State University, her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.

About the Author
Jeff Todd Titon received his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota, where he studied ethnomusicology with Alan Kagan and musicology with Johannes Riedel. He has completed fieldwork in North America on religious folk music, blues music and old-time fiddling with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. For two years he was the guitarist in the Lazy Bill Lucas Blues Band, a group that appeared in the 1970 Ann Arbor Blues Festival. The author or editor of seven books, including EARLY DOWNHOME BLUES (which won the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award) and the five-volume AMERICAN MUSICAL TRADITIONS (named by Library Journal as one of the outstanding reference works of 2003), Titon is also a documentary photographer and filmmaker. In 1991, he wrote a hypertext multimedia computer program about old-time fiddler Clyde Davenport that is regarded as a model for interactive representations of people making music. He founded the ethnomusicology program at Tufts University, where he taught from 1971 to 1986. From 1990 to 1995, he served as the editor of ETHNOMUSICOLOGY, the journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology. A Fellow of the American Folklore Society since 1986, he has been Professor of Music and the director of the Ph.D. program in ethnomusicology at Brown University.

Timothy J. Cooley is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he teaches courses in Polish and American vernacular, and folk and popular music. He also is affiliated faculty with the university's Global and International Studies Program. He earned a masters degree in Music History at Northwestern University, and received his Ph.D in Ethnomusicology at Brown University, where he studied with Jeff Todd Titon. His book, MAKING MUSIC IN THE POLISH TATRAS: TOURISTS, ETHNOGRAPHERS, AND MOUNTAIN MUSICIANS, won the 2006 Orbis Prize for Polish Studies, awarded by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. He enjoys playing Polish mountain fiddle music, American old-time banjo, and singing in choirs. A revised second edition of his book SHADOWS IN THE FIELD: NEW PERSPECTIVES FOR FIELDWORK IN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY, edited with Gregory F. Barz, is being prepared for publication in 2008. Cooley is the editor of Ethnomusicology, the journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and serves as the Society's Southern California Chapter president. His recent research considers how surfers, especially in California, musically express their ideas about surfing and the surfing community, and how surfing as a sport and lifestyle is represented in popular culture.

David Locke received his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in 1978, studying with David McAllester, Mark Slobin, and Gen'ichi Tsuge. At Wesleyan, he studied traditional African music under Abraham Adzinyah and Freeman Donkor. From 1975 to 1977, he conducted doctoral dissertation fieldwork in Ghana under the supervision of Professor J.H.K. Nketia. In Ghana, his teachers and research associates included Godwin Agbeli, Midawo Gideon Foli Alorwoyie, and Abubakari Lunna. He has published numerous books and articles on African music and regularly performs the repertories of music and dance about which he writes. He teaches at Tufts University where he serves as the director of the master's degree program in ethnomusicology and as a faculty advisor in the Tufts-in-Ghana Foreign Study Program. His current projects include an oral history and musical documentation of dance-drumming of the Dagbamba people and an in-depth musical documentation of Agbadza, an idiom of Ewe music, in collaboration with Professor Gideon Foli Alorwoyie. He is active in the Society for Ethnomusicology and has served as the president of its Northeast Chapter.

David P. McAllester received his Ph.D. in anthropology from Columbia University, where he studied with George Herzog. A student of American Indian music since 1938, he undertook fieldwork among the Comanches, Hopis, Apaches, Navajos, Penobscots and Passamaquoddies. He was the author of such classic works in ethnomusicology as PEYOTE MUSIC, ENEMY WAY MUSIC, MYTH OF THE GREAT STAR CHANT and NAVAJO BLESSINGWAY SINGER (with co-author Charlotte Frisbie). He was one of the founders of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and he served as its president and the editor of its journal, ETHNOMUSICOLOGY. Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Music at Wesleyan University, he passed away in 2006.

Anne K. Rasmussen is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the College of William and Mary, where she also directs a Middle Eastern Music Ensemble. She received her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of California where she studied with A. J. Racy, Timothy Rice, and Nazir Jairazbhoy. Gerard Behague and Scott Marcus also are among her influential teachers. Her first area of research is Arab music and culture in diaspora enclaves of North America, and her current project, based on two years of ethnographic research in Indonesia, concerns Islamic ritual and performance. Her book, WOMEN'S VOICES, THE RECITED QUR'ÂN, AND ISLAMIC MUSICAL ARTS IN INDONESIA, is forthcoming with University of California Press, and she is the contributing co-editor of MUSICS OF MULTICULTURAL AMERICA (Schirmer, 1997). Professor Rasmussen has written articles appearing in ETHNOMUSICOLOGY, ASIAN MUSIC, POPULAR MUSIC, AMERICAN MUSIC, THE WORLD OF MUSIC, THE GARLAND ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORLD MUSIC, and the HARVARD DICTIONARY OF MUSIC; she also has produced four CD recordings documenting immigrant and community music in the United States. She is a former Fulbright senior scholar, served as the First Vice President of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and received the Phi Beta Kappa Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the Jaap Kunst Prize for the best article published annually in the field of ethnomusicology.

This book is wonder and a treasure trove of musical ideas from around the planet. For example, how many music historians are aware of how the Native Amercians used song to identify each of their tribes?
Mr. Titon has provided very interesting facts about music making from many world cultures. He has also produced a 3 CD sound compilation of musical examples for this book that is indispensible.
If you're tired of today's bland market of music that has sadly squashed historical music making of any kind, this book is an excellent journey into the world's most basic roots of song and music.

Fortran 77: the best programming language for scientific applications

Fortran 77 were, and it could continue being it, a powerful programming language, easy to learn and using for any scientific and technical schools students. All real-world scientific and engineering applications, from 1957 until late 1970's, they were programmed in Fortran. When the first personal computers appeared, at the beginning of the 1980's, Fortran compilers also got ready for them, but nowadays we haven't good compilers for home computers at affordable prices. The 77 version of Fortran added to the language the important and practical concepts about structured programming, what allowed to design and modify program routines orderly and easily, very laborious task of making with the previous sequential languages, because of the GOTO sentence, that became useless in structured languages. I would even say that the later versions of Fortran, the 90/95/2003..., the only thing that they add is to approach them to languages like C or C++ that don't contribute anything to facilitate the life to technical programmers and, on the other hand, they need to lose a precious time solving lots of specific internal language needs, far away of their real-world-problems to solve. A Fortran programmer doesn't need to design complicate user interfaces for input and output data, on the contrary to administrative applications programmers, which really need these tools, and for that reason, they need other languages different from Fortran.

About the Author
Cheryl Hamilton, an author well known for her writing style and award-winning teaching, understands the importance of communication as a lifelong skill. Also the author of COMMUNICATING FOR RESULTS, she has conducted a number of research studies, including one published in the COMMUNITY COLLEGE JOURNAL OF RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. Dr. Hamilton has presented more than 32 papers at professional conventions, including those sponsored by the National Communication Association, Southwest Educational Research Association, Western Communication Association, and Texas Speech Communication Association. She has conducted seminars for groups such as the National Property Management Association, Bell Helicopter Textron, U.S. Postal Department, North Central Regional Police Academy, and LTV Aerospace. A native of Illinois, she received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University; her master's degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana; and her doctoral degree from the University of North Texas in Denton.

An Outstanding Book for Public Speakers!

This book was required for a speech class I took. The book is very interesting and has a lot of techniques to make a speech effective. I really like the sections on "Preparing Your Speech" and "Presenting Your Speech." They were actually the best. There are some great examples of how communication affects the environment and the speaker. The sequential process of writing and delivering a speech is packed with some excellent principles and suggestions. This is an excellent book for preparing and delivering a speech; building confidence to speak, and to develop credibility with the audience. This is an excellent book for speakers and potential speakers. It has helped me with poetry presentations and speaking engagements.

Another great book to read is "Trilogy Moments for the Mind, Body and Soul." This book introduces the new "Epulaeryu" poetic form, and it's also filled with great inspirational poems to stimulate the mind, body and soul.

GREAT EXPLANATIONS!

Great emphasis on visual aids. Organization is great and easy to understand. Author does an excellent job of explaining. Includes some great examples of speeches throughout the book. Great section on speaker anxiety - helped a lot.

Dont waste money buying this from the school book store. Get it here at amazon. It is the same thing and cost much less. Arrived in new condition.
