About the Author
Jonathan R. White--a national expert on the topic of terrorism--is executive director of the Homeland Security Initiative. Immediately prior to that appointment, Dr. White served as dean of Social Sciences at Grand Valley State University. He has instructed on terrorism, militarism, criminology, police administration, philosophy, and justice in Western civilization. Since 1998, he has worked as an adjunct instructor with the State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT) Program. A recognized expert on Middle Eastern extremism, Dr. White used his knowledge to develop and strengthen the SLATT program on international terrorism.

An Introduction to Terrorism, with a caution....

Jonathan R. White's "Terrorism and Homeland Security", now in its sixth edition, gathers together an impressive amount of material in a textbook survey of a difficult field. White approaches the subject of terrorism from theoretical, organizational, historical, and geographic points of view, among others. His concluding chapters address the homeland security response to terrorism, the dangers of bureaucratizing that response, and the inherent threat to civil liberties. The presentation includes an impressive collection of maps, graphics, and photographs. The text has obviously been updated to practically the moment of publication.

The good news is that this textbook is a great introduction for the average college student. White methodically presents all sides of every important question; the thoughtful student will have much to ponder in considering the challenging topic of terrorism.

There are some shortcomings. The text has some annoying factual errors; for example, the US Navy escort of Kuwaiti tankers in the late 1980's had everything to do with the effects of the Iran-Iraq War and nothing to do with the hijacking of airplanes, as White implies. More importantly, in presenting all sides of any given question, White makes little effort to distinguish between the factually grounded and the merely speculative. Not every point of view on terrorism is equally valid; many cited opinions are the stuff of incomplete newspaper reporting, politicized Op-Ed pieces, or even obvious terrorist propaganda. Conscientious instructors will have to parse those points of view for their students.

"Terrorism and Homeland Security" is cautiously recommended as an introductory-level college textbook on the topic of terrorism.

I found this book to be well organized and a decent introduction to terrorism. It is a textbook so I would not consider it a fun read, but it is informative.

Excellent Textbook but biased

This is an excellent textbook for any Political Science or Criminal Justice major. It gives the facts. However, there is a liberal bias. This review is coming from someone who has a liberal bias. Many facts are available in this text. The world is a complicated place and terrorism is subjective. If you are a conservative do not buy this book. It will only anger you. However, if you are a logical, free thinking person you will learn from this book. I give it 7/10.

Its treatment of physiological contributes to psychopathology is particularly illustrative of this approach." About the Author
David H. Barlow is an internationally recognized expert and leader in clinical psychology, having pioneered many treatments and investigations in anxiety and mood disorders. Currently Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Boston University, Dr. Barlow is also founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, one of the largest research clinics of its kind in the world. Previously, he was distinguished professor at State University of New York at Albany. From 1975 to 1979, he was professor of psychiatry and psychology at Brown University, where he also founded the clinical psychology internship program. From 1969 to 1975, he was professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi, where he founded the Medical School psychology residency program. Dr. Barlow received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, his M.A. from Boston College, and his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award from the American Psychological Association and is a fellow of the American Psychological Society.

V. Mark Durand is known worldwide as an authority in the area of autism spectrum disorders. He is a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, where he was the founding Dean of Arts and Sciences and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. Durand is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received over $4 million in federal funding to study the behavior problems in children with disabilities. Previously he served in a variety of leadership positions at the University at Albany, including chair of the psychology department, interim dean of Arts and Sciences, and founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (all in psychology) at the State University of New York Stony Brook. Dr. Durand was awarded the University Award for Excellence in Teaching at SUNY Albany in 1991, and the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in 2007. Currently a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Autism Society of America, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions and has written 10 books as well as over 100 publications on functional communication, educational programming, and behavior therapy. Dr. Durand developed a unique treatment for severe behavior problems that is used worldwide. Most recently he developed an innovative approach (Optimistic Parenting) to help families work with their challenging children.

Great Introductory book

Very thorough treatment of the subject from well rounded, expert authors. Text assumes no previous knowledge, and is quite lengthy because of its comprehensive nature. I have used it many times as a reference text after taking a course in which it was required.
Also this text is an example of a beautiful job of "book making". The text has many color plates -- and a high quality printing job.

DSM-IV explained (maybe).

Using DSM-IV criteria throughout, the authors manage to provide a succinct analysis of psychopathology, as seen from a transtheoretical perspective.
The research alone quoted throughout makes this book a valuable resource, but combined with an engaging writing style and top-notch structure, it promises to secure Barlow and Durand's position as authors-to-beat when it comes to the field of Abnormal Psychology.

Great Book!

I ordered this book for my Psychopathologies class, and I absolutely love it! Each type of disorder is broken down into chapters, for example, one chapter covers all the Somatoform and Dissociative Disorders. Then, each chapter is broken down into the individual disorders. There are case studies, diagnostic criteria per the DSM-IV-TR, colored pictures, and current research regarding each of the disorders. The book also covers, briefly, the treatment process for these disorders. The treatment section focuses more on therapy rather than medications, but it does state what type of medications are generally prescribed. There are visual aids as well to help those who can't learn by straight reading. I think this is a valuable book and worth the money I spent on it. I will definitely be keeping this book!

About the Author
Jim Dalton is Professor of Psychology at Bloomsburg University and is in charge of the undergraduate curriculum clearinghouse for community psychology for the Society for Research in Community Psychology. He holds a bachelor's degree from King College in Tennessee and a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.

Maurice J. Elias earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Elias is a Professor for the Department of Psychology at Rutgers University, and co-developer of the Social Decision Making/Social Problem Solving Project. Areas of research interest include clinical, school, and community psychology particularly in the area of children, adolescents, and families; design and evaluation of preventive interventions; social, cognitive, and behavioral competence; and emotional intelligence.

Abraham Wandersman earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1976 and is currently a Professor at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Wandersman's areas of interest include community psychology, program evaluation, environmental and ecological psychology, citizen participation, community coalitions, and program evaluation.

Decent and solid introduction to Community Psychology

I purchased this book as a textbook for my Community Multicultural School Psychology Doctoral level course. It includes all of the basic tenements and theories of general community and multicultural psychology. The book reads easily and lends the practicing psychologist ideas to many areas of research. Great reference!

5$ book best investment ever! Needed this for my community psych class, it has the same material as the 3rd edition the only difference is in the way the chapters are ordered. So I saved over $100+ buying this. This book has the exact same content as the 3rd edition the only difference is the way the chapters are ordered in the third edition, you just need to do a bit of searching in this book to find the content.

Amazing books for those interested in learning about Community Psychology

This is an excellent introductory book for any interested in Community Psych. The book starts with an explanation of some of the more basic concept and than works its way up to the more challenging ones. I would definitely recommend this book. It's very easy to understand.

About the Author
Michael Horvit is Professor Emeritus of Composition and Theory at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. His works range from solo instrumental and vocal pieces to large symphonic and choral compositions and operas, all widely performed in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Israel. He has published with C.F. Peters, MorningStar, Recital Publications, Shawnee Press, E.C. Schirmer, Southern, and Transcontinental, and has CDs with the Albany label. Horvit's awards include the Martha Baird Rockefeller Award as well as the National Endowment for the Arts.

Timothy Koozin is known internationally as a specialist in music instructional technology. Dr. Koozin is editor of the electronic journal, MUSIC THEORY ONLINE. His writings appear in PERSPECTIVES OF NEW MUSIC, CONTEMPORARY MUSIC REVIEW, MUSIC THEORY ONLINE, COLLEGE MUSIC SYMPOSIUM, NOTES AND COMPUTERS IN MUSIC RESEARCH. He teaches courses in music theory, analysis, and music technology at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music.

Robert Nelson teaches music theory and composition at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. A composer in residence and music director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival for 17 seasons, he has also received numerous commissions for compositions and arrangements for the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

Required for school!

I am a music major and part of my required curriculum is that I take two years of ear training. This book was obligatory for all four semesters of aural comprehension and very helpful in practicing lessons learned in class. If you were to use this as a self-taught book, this is not the book to buy. This book is a bound book of aural comprehension worksheet drills for homework that should be supplemented with a real text and teacher. For a great text to learn ear training, sight singing, and complex rhythms, buy Rhythm and Pitch.

This book is one of the very best sources available to practice ear training (dictation), especially if you are a music major in college. It starts at a simple level and takes you through melodic and harmonic dictation in a methodical manner. If you are having trouble with music dictation in college buy this book; use it over the summer to keep your skills up. The CD-ROM element is perfect for playing melodies and harmonic progressions to you for practice. I have spent much time and money looking into these ear training methods and this is one of the very best. - Wayne Dieterich, BM, MA, MM, CRCCO, ChM. AAGO.

Its a fast-cash fraud

First of all, there is no "book". What you receive is an almost empty workbook (of the kind you could buy in any papershop), and a CD with a poorly designed software.

If you want some quality, buy a common, GOOD music notebook and a GOOD ear training software, like EarMaster School. This book is a waste of money. I bought it, do not make the same mistake.

About the Author
Michael Campbell is a writer and pianist. A California native, he is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Amherst College and holds a doctorate from Peabody Conservatory, where he studied piano with Leon Fleisher. As a commercial musician, he has assisted such artists as Angela Lansbury, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Bob Hope, Redd Foxx, Ethel Merman, and Don McLean. As a concert pianist, he has performed a broad range of repertoire, including his own transcriptions of recordings by Art Tatum, Jelly Roll Morton, and other legendary jazz pianists. He also performs all of the piano selections included with this textbook.

The book is great. There is a myriad of information (which is lacking from Wikipedia). The text is very readable. The sections about the lives of regular people during time periods is rather dry. Otherwise the book is great. One of the best history texts out there.

Great book for High School Students

I bought this book to tutor one of my kids with. I was there to help explain the concepts, but the book did most of that. We needed a lot of problems to work out and they were right in the book too. This is a great book to teach high school students with.

Easy to understanding, good for beginners

I bought this book for a restricted course. I have learned everything in this book before. However, I still learn something new from this book. Examples in this book are good and all exercises helped me to refresh my knowledge. I highly recommend it to beginners in intermediate algebra.

The book was in the fair category, but it was a little worse than that. It just was not what I expected when I purchased the book. I by no means did not expect top quality, but I did expect the book to be in a better condition.

About the Author
Michael Campbell is a writer and pianist. A California native, he is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Amherst College and holds a doctorate from Peabody Conservatory, where he studied piano with Leon Fleisher. As a commercial musician, he has assisted such artists as Angela Lansbury, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Bob Hope, Redd Foxx, Ethel Merman, and Don McLean. As a concert pianist, he has performed a broad range of repertoire, including his own transcriptions of recordings by Art Tatum, Jelly Roll Morton, and other legendary jazz pianists. He also performs all of the piano selections included with this textbook.

About the Author
Eugene R. Wittkopf was the R. Downs Poindexter Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University (LSU). He also held appointments at the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina. He received his doctorate from The Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He published more than thirty books on international politics and foreign policy and several dozen refereed articles in professional journals and chapters in books. He held offices in professional associations and served on the editorial boards of numerous profession journals. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Foreign Policy Section of the International Studies Association. Earlier, Professor Wittkopf was named the 1996 Distinguished Research Master of Arts, Humanities, and Social Studies at Louisiana State University. This is the highest award given by the LSU in recognition of faculty contributions to research and scholarship.

Christopher M. Jones is associate professor and chair within the Department of Political Science at Northern Illinois University (NIU). He has also served as assistant chair and director of undergraduate studies. He received his doctorate from The Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University, where he received university-wide awards in research and teaching. He has published more than twenty journal articles and book chapters related to American foreign and defense policy, and co-edited The Future of American Foreign Policy (1999) with Eugene R. Wittkopf. Professor Jones has been recognized for teaching excellence by student organizations, the American Political Science Association, The National Political Science Honor Society, Who's Who among America's Teachers, and three universities. In 2002 he became the youngest recipient of Northern Illinois University's Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, the institution's longest-standing faculty honor. Professor Jones currently serves as vice-president (and president elect) of the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the International Studies Association.

Charles W. Kegley, Jr., is Corporate Secretary on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs and a Moynihan Faculty Research Associate in the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syracuse University. He has held appointments at Georgetown University, the University of Texas, Rutgers University, the People's University of China, and the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva. He received his doctorate from The Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He has written and edited more than forty-five books and over one hundred journal articles and book chapters. He is past president of the International Studies Association (ISA) and a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award of ISA's Foreign Policy Section. Professor Kegley is also Distinguished Pearce Professor of International Relations Emeritus at the University of South Carolina.

Essential !

There are a fair number of books on this subject, but for my money only 2 are really worth getting: Bruce Jentleson's "American Foreign Policy" and this text.
I am a professor at an I.R. Department of a university, so naturally I am always on the look out for any new and good book on US foreign policy, as that is one of the courses that I usually teach. This comprehensive text is really a blessing for anyone engaged in either teaching the subject or being a student of it.
The book is an indepth study of US foreign policy of the last 200 years or so, with clear emphasis placed on the more recent area, namely the Cold War and beyond. At 670 pages it is certainly not short, but so far I can only say that just about everything is relevant to the subject. The main authors of this text Wittkopf and Kegley can certainly be considered veterans of this subject. Their approach is not only pervasive but also insightful. There are numerous examples and the sources explored are very relevant and important, as far as I could tell. The authors go through all the different aspects of US foreign policy and have a chapter on decision making as well. Models and theories are also briefly discussed, although this is not a theory book.

To make a long story short, this is certainly a text book worth having for the student of US foreign policy and I.R.

I am usually not impressed with textbooks; since this class is pretty much taught and based off of this book, it is sufficient for our needs. Though I cannot say that I have learned much from the material or how it is presented.
