A must for psychology graduates!

The biggest reason for psychologist burn out is not defining oneself theoretically or truly knowing your worldview as a therapist. Les Parrott's very accessible style of writing explains the various therapy theories with enough pros and cons for you to examine each critically and integrate that which you relate to into your personal theory or worldview. Chapter 5 is an introduction to your Personal Theory of Therapy and is written simply, in a conversational style. The last chapter "Comparing the Major Therapeutic Theories" is brief and excellent. This is really the only book on therapy theories you'll ever need. It's fantastic and enjoyable to read!

Excellent textbook introduction to the theorists

Counseling and Psychotherapy takes a broad overview of each of the major theorists in the development of psychology as a formal discipline. It's an excellent textbook for classroom use or a primer for those who have a proclivity for the field.

Each chapter overviews the same twelve components (bio, history, view of human nature, function of therapist, goals of therapy, methods & techniques, etc.) from the POV of the particular theorist under discussion.

Dr. Parrott's approach makes it easy to differentiate from one important method or technique to another. All topics are covered in view of the person, background and philosophical perspective of the originator. This humanizing style saves the book from the aridity of most textbooks, making it especially readable and interesting.

Excellent introduction to a field that is both broad and deep. Also enlightening for those who are pursuing a career/practice in "life coaching".

Review of Kindle version (not about book content)

I usually get annoyed seeing reviews that do not talk about the product but instead complains about the seller or shipping but I just wanted to warn others not to get the Kindle version even if it is for renting. I don't think this book was really cleared for the digital version and so more than 30 pages were omitted and left blank except for a sentence citing copyright issues.

This book is expensive for us college kids on a budget so don't go the cheap route and rent or buy the Kindle version because there's a catch!

New Fifth Edition correct flaws

I reviewed the Fourth edition before, but have now revised that review to reflect major improvements in the new edition.

This is a learn-by-example style of text. Not only are examples given in the body text, but the first end-of-chapter problems are worked out in detail, and solutions are given for many more. I consider this a fine book for enriching the material I'm presenting in class.

The old edition was dated and promoted design styles that are not advised. The new edition fixes those problems and this is now a great text. Three chapters introducing VHDL have been added after the chapter sequences on combinatorial logic, sequential logic, and digital systems. Thus VHDL doesn't intefere with the teaching of the fundamentals, but serves to enhance by providing the modern practices. The chapters are not thorough enough for practicing design in VHDL but are a good introduction. Relatively modern components are now used in the practical examples. I don't think anyone will mind that the chapters on asynchronous state machine design are gone.

The new text comes with a CD containing a simple VHDL simulator (which I have not tested), SimuAid (also untested) and Professor Roth's venerable LogicAid -- a combinatorial logic synthesis tool which if nothing else provides a means that students can check their hand-made designs. People using this text in self-study would probably find the CD paricularly useful, although it has little value in school settings where professional software tools are available.

I had a horrible prof. and managed to learn logic design on my own. This book made it possible. Very clear explanations, plenty of theory and design examples plus some great problems. I recommend this title, great for self study or as a class supplement.

the best for excercises

i have been using both roth and mano for my digital design course at college and my experience is that roth is 'the' book for digital design.it is clear ,concise and to the point.mano seems to be a little too descriptive and sometimes drives you early to bed.however it is always good to refer to mano as for PLDs are concerned..

A great book on *all* the basics

I thought this was a terrific book when I had it in college! That was way back and it was the 4th ed., but I doubt it's changed much (I need to buy it myself). This book covers all the "basics" of music. Now, I'm a little biased because I learned the very true basics of music through several years of band as a kid (notes, scales, basic time, etc), but there are still very many things I never learned from those kid days that are contained herein. It is concise and complete, covering many topics and makes it easy to understand everything very quickly. I was devastated when the last WEEK of the semester I left the book somewhere - and when I tried to find it in the likely places that day, it was gone. Some other engineering student (I was taking this as an extra class) probably picked it up and realized what a great source it was. I liked it so much I went back to the school store during the next-semester sale to buy one - only to see the department had given it up for another book! Bummer!

Must have some background in music or it's gibberish

Duckworth is not a very good writer of educational texts. I was able to follow it fairly well, but this was a textbook for an introductory class, and much of the material is poorly explained, with an assumption that the reader, whom he seems to intend to be a beginner, knows more than they probably do. I found this textbook to be needlessly challenging for the wrong reasons. It is fairly useful, but my professor even hated using this book for an introductory course (the department selected it for her). If you are in step with a lot of music fundamentals, it should help you advance much farther; however, if you are not,, this book will seriously confuse you.

I hope that no one was scared away by my use of the word theory. Most people seem to fear and laothe music theory but this book offers a simple and easy way to learn the basic elements of theory. William Duckworth has explained everything with the utmost concern for the reader's comprehension of the material. Useful excercises are provided after each lesson. This book is structured like a textbook but it is also a useful learning tool for someone with mere interest.

Good broad overview of subject matter.

Used in my Social/Political Science class in college, it gives a great variety of exposure to many various philosophers. Then, after each is the feminist perspective in modern context. It's a great source for broad brush exposure, but for more thorough reading, I would go elsewhere. I did keep the book though, makes a good reference once in a while.

Awful - Never buy from seller

I purchased the book with more than enough time to receive before my class started and then never received the book. I sent several emails and never got a response when following up to see why I did not get the book.

Not reliable at all!!!!

Forced me to scramble to get the book elsewhere and cram for my test at the last minute.

About the Author
Jose Ashford teaches the human behavior course in the department of Social Work at Arizona State University and serves as a professor of social science and law in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Justice Studies. He is currently the principle investigator for the Family Drug courts grant, funded by the governor's Division of Drug Policy. He is widely published in areas dealing with the assessment, classification, and treatment of special need offenders; juvenile aftercare; and forensic social work. Professor Ashford testifies around the country as an expert in the assessment of mitigating factors in capital murder cases.

Craig Winston LeCroy is a professor in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University. Dr. LeCroy has directed several projects for children and adolescents, including a National Institute of Mental Health Training Grant for emotionally disturbed children and adolescents; Youth Plus: Positive Socialization for Youth, a substance abuse prevention project; and a primary prevention program for adolescent girls. Professor LeCroy has published widely in the areas of children's mental health, social skills training, risk and needs assessment with juvenile offenders, and adolescent treatment and program evaluation.

Kathy L. Lortie is a school social work with the Tucson Unified School District. She was previously a pediatric social worker at University Medical Center, University of Arizona, Health Sciences Center. She co-teaches Social Work in Health Care, a graduate course at Arizona State University. A certified childbirth educator, she has taught classes on childbirth, parenting, and infant care and has worked as a labor assistant. She is also the author of SPECIAL DELIVERY: A LABOR GUIDE FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS. Her current interests include child abuse prevention, infant mental health, school social work, and coping with chronic illness in adolescence.

Needs an editor

I had the misfortune of having to read this book in a Human Development course. This textbook is wordy, redundant, and overflowing with irrelevant detail. The writing is incomprehensible. There is a crippling lack of focus which defeats the purpose of any text--to guide a student through relevant material. A good editor would have rejected this book outright, or at least have gotten out a big pack of red pens!

Very poor text book

I'm in a MSW program and this text book was part of the reading material. For a text book, its poorly written. The book jumps from topic to topic and does not have a clear flow from one subject to anouther. Items are misplaced and the information is difficult to find. In my class of 25 student there was no one who was happy with this book.

The only textbook I've ever enjoyed

I'm a first-semester MSW student. I don't have a background in social work or the social sciences, so I may be way off when I say that this is the most informative textbook that I've ever read. (Mind you, I'd stil rather be reading something by Howard Zinn or Jared Diamind.) Every page teaches me something new. If it has organizational problems, I haven't noticed, because reading it is so engrossing.

I really thought this book was helpful. I bought this book to complement another book I had trouble understanding. I finished this book in a couple of days in time to complete a research paper. You can't find many easy reading books like this one.

Schultz & Schultz's *Theories of Personality* is incredibly well written, concise, and a pleasure to read. The information is presented in a way that is both in-depth and easy to understand. This text provides background information on theorists, their theoretical contributions, and loads of current research on aspects of each theory. A+ for Schultz & Schultz! Highly recommended for all students of psychology, and all professors of personality!

I have enjoyed this textbook because it gives a lot more information about the theorist and their theory develpment than many other Psychology textbooks. It is interesting to read about their lives, and understand more of the reasoning behind the development of their theories.

About the Author
Dr. Reeves is Regent's Professor of Public Administration at The University of New Mexico. His books include (authored and co-authored) Cases in Public Human Resources Management, Human Resources Management, Personnel Management in the Public Sector, Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector, and Politics of Peace Corps and VISTA. He also has published numerous journal articles and consulted with private and public sector organizations in areas of performance appraisal, discipline, grievance handling, dispute resolution, and labor-management relations. Dr. Reeves serves on labor and employment arbitration panels of the American Arbitration Association, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, US Postal Service/APWU, Tinker Air Force Base/AFGE, US Postal Service/NALC, and Rio Grande Credit Union. He is an arbitrator and grievance hearing officer for the City of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, Albuquerque T-VI, Gallup, Roswell, Lake Havasu City, as well as the County of Bernalillo, Curry, Dona Ana, and Maricopa. Dr. Reeves has provided consulting services to the governments of Kazakhstan, Hungary, Somalia, Oman, and Brazil, as well as the Navajo and Jicarilla Apache Nations. Dr. Reeves is on the Board of Directors and Past-President of Outcomes, Inc., and Casa Esperanza.

Made HR Class Much More Engaging

I used this casebook for the first time in a graduate-level public sector human resource management course in the Spring of 2007. I essentially structured the course around the case studies, using a basic survey text as a supplement. The student response was strongly positive. I had them do weekly writing assignments based on the cases, and we started each class meeting by discussing the cases. This approach made the subject matter much more real and practical to the students, and as a result they all excelled. If I have any criticisms of the book, they are: 1) many of the cases that are labeled as something other than a disciplinary matter are actually disciplinary matters. So there is less variety to the cases than a look at the table of contents indicates. 2) For such a slim book, the price tag is quite high!

About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to The Social History of Reformation, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies, and Utopian Studies. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2013). He is also the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Textbook Required For History Class, Not That Bad Of A History Textbook (-:

Bought this textbook for A LOT CHEAPER than at my school's co-op bookstore! The textbook came in decent shape for the price. There was some highlighting in it but I found it useful for studying.

The textbook can be a little dull to read, so with my history class I would Google AP Euro and the certain subject or definition, and that helped with understanding the material in the textbook AND saved me time from reading the whole section or chapter. The textbook is a great book for history nerds lol. The textbook really just explains what happened and why it happened. It tries to make you understand what happened and that history repeats itself.

Western Civ 101

Great history textbook. I am taking Western Civ 101 online, with numerous essay questions due each week. The book makes the class a breeze. The way it is written is very easy to understand and follow. It's set up very nicely for use with my assignments: every section is headlined with the topic and important points are bolded, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for without having to look back to the index.

Overall it is a very interesting book. Ancient history is not everyone's cup of tea, but after having this book for a few weeks I am seeing how fascinating it really is. The book is so easy to read that even if I didn't have to take this class I would still want to read it.

Have found that Amazon has the best price on text books, new or used, far lower than the local College book store. They arrive with in the week and are in good shape. Returning them is easy too with the reminders from Amazon at end of semester and on line return labels, just try and remember to keep the box they came in.

One caution though, it you are needing a study guide or on line materials that come with new books and have an access codes to use those materials, be advised that once the access code is used once (with the new text book) it can not be used again with the then used text book. Amazon was not real clear on this when we started ordering used text books, best to also order and pay for a new user guide & access code if you will need it with the used text book. Need also to consider ordering new text book with usable access code depending on what may be least expensive.
