About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to The Social History of Reformation, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies, and Utopian Studies. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2013). He is also the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

I used this book for a humanities class in college. I never really enjoyed humanities, but this book read like a story and made the class much more bearable.

Cindy L. Griffin is a professor of communication studies at Colorado State University. She received her PhD from Indiana University and has taught public speaking; civility; gender and communication; communication, language, and thought; contemporary theories of rhetoric; history of rhetorical theories; feminist theories of discourse; identity, voice, and agency; and graduate seminars in women's studies. A proponent of civic engagement and civility in people's communication and their lives, her research interests include developing the theory of invitational rhetoric, advancing theories that help communication scholars and students understand our complex identities, and exploring the relationships between civility, power, and rhetoric. She is the author of Invitation to Public Speaking (Cengage, 2012), Invitation to Public Speaking Handbook (Cengage, 2011); coauthor of Invitation to Human Communication (with Jennifer Bone, 2013), Feminist Rhetorical Theories (with Sonja K. Foss and Karen A. Foss, Waveland, 2006), and Readings in Feminist Rhetorical Theory (with Karen A. Foss and Sonja K. Foss, Waveland, 2004); and coeditor of Standing in the Intersections: Feminist Voices, Feminist Practices in Communication Studies (with Karma R. Chávez, SUNY Press, 2012). About the Author
William A. Haviland is professor emeritus at the University of Vermont, where he founded the Department of Anthropology and taught for 32 years. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He has carried out original research in archaeology in Guatemala and Vermont; ethnography in Maine and Vermont; and physical anthropology in Guatemala. This work has been the basis of numerous publications in national and international books and journals, as well as in media intended for the general public. His books include The Original Vermonters, coauthored with Marjorie Power, and a technical monograph on ancient Maya settlement. He also served as consultant for the award-winning telecourse Faces of Culture, and he is co-editor of the series Tikal Reports, published by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Besides teaching and writing, Dr. Haviland has lectured to many professional and nonprofessional audiences in Canada, Mexico, Lesotho, South Africa, and Spain, as well as in the United States. He served as expert witness for the Missisquoi Abenaki of Vermont in an important court case over aboriginal fishing rights. Dr. Haviland was named University Scholar by the Graduate School of the University of Vermont in 1990; received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sovereign Republic of the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi, St. Francis/Sokoki Band in 1996; and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Center for Research on Vermont in 2006. Now retired from teaching, he continues his research, writing, and lecturing from the coast of Maine. He serves as a trustee for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, focused on Maine's Native American history, culture, art, and archaeology. His most recent books are At the Place of the Lobsters and Crabs (2009) and Canoe Indians of Down East Maine (2012).

Harald E.L. Prins is a University Distinguished Professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University. Academically trained at half a dozen Dutch and U.S. universities, he previously taught at Radboud University (Netherlands), as well as Bowdoin College and Colby College in Maine, and was a visiting professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. Named a Distinguished University Teaching Scholar, he received numerous honors for his outstanding academic teaching, including the Presidential Award in 1999, Carnegie Professor of the Year for Kansas in 2006, and the AAA/Oxford University Press Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology in 2010. His fieldwork focuses on indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere, and he has long served as an advocacy anthropologist on land claims and other native rights. In that capacity, Dr. Prins has been a key expert witness in both the U.S. Senate and Canadian courts. His numerous academic publications appear in seven languages, and his books include The Mi'kmaq: Resistance, Accommodation, and Cultural Survival. Also trained in filmmaking, he was president of the Society for Visual Anthropology, and coproduced award-winning documentaries. He has been the visual anthropology editor of American Anthropologist, co-principal investigator for the U.S. National Park Service, international observer in Paraguay's presidential elections, and a research associate at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.

Dana Walrath, an award-winning writer, artist and anthropologist, is a faculty member of University of Vermont's College of Medicine. After earning her PhD in medical and biological anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught there and at Temple University. Dr. Walrath broke new ground in paleoanthropology through her work on the evolution of human childbirth. She has also written on a wide range of topics related to gender in paleoanthropology, the social production of sickness and health, sex differences, genetics, and evolutionary medicine. Her work has appeared in edited volumes and in journals such as Current Anthropology, American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and Anthropology Now. Her books include Aliceheimer's, a graphic memoir, and Like Water on Stone, a verse novel. She developed a novel curriculum in medical education at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine that brings humanism, anthropological theory and practice, narrative medicine, and professionalism skills to first-year medical students. Dr. Walrath also has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has exhibited her artwork in North America and Europe. Her recent work in the field of graphic medicine combines anthropology with memoir and visual art. Spanning a variety of disciplines, her work has been supported by diverse sources such as the National Science Foundation, the Templeton Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Vermont Studio Center, the Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She spent 2012-2013 as a Fulbright Scholar at the American University of Armenia and the Institute of Ethnography and Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. She is working on a second graphic memoir that combines her Aliceheimer's work with her fieldwork on aging and memory in Armenia.

Bunny McBride is an award-winning author specializing in cultural anthropology, indigenous peoples, international tourism, and nature conservation issues. Published in dozens of national and international print media, she has reported from Africa, Europe, China, and the Indian Ocean. Holding an MA from Columbia University, she is highly rated as a teacher, and she has served as visiting anthropology faculty at Principia College and the Salt Institute for Documentary Field Studies. Since 1996, she has been an adjunct lecturer of anthropology at Kansas State University. Among her many publications are books such as Women of the Dawn; Molly Spotted Elk: A Penobscot in Paris; Indians in Eden (with Harald Prins); and The Audubon Field Guide to African Wildlife, which she coauthored. McBride also has authored numerous book chapters. Honors include a special commendation from the state legislature of Maine for significant contributions to Native women's history. As an activist and researcher for the Aroostook Band of Micmacs (1981-1991), she assisted this Maine Indian community in its successful efforts to reclaim lands, gain tribal status, and revitalize cultural traditions. In recent years, she has served as co-principal investigator for a National Park Service ethnography project and curated several museum exhibits, including "Journeys West: The David & Peggy Rockefeller American Indian Art Collection" for the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her latest exhibit, "Indians & Rusticators," received a 2012 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History. Currently, she serves as president of the Women's World Summit Foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is completing a collection of essays.

Biased and superficial

The Essence of Anthropology does a great job of taking a very readable and approachable tone. Unfortunately, the authors sling their biases everywhere, making a big mess all over the text. A book of this nature should be written from a disinterested perspective. The authors write it from a hyper-liberal perspective.

For instance, they refrain from judging cultures based on marriage practices. Arranged marriages in India are fine and dandy. Polygyny is cast in a positive light. But as soon as you get to same-sex marriage, you get this series of paragraphs:

"The arguments most commonly marshaled by opponents of same-sex unions are, first, that marriage has always been between males and females, but as we have just seen, this is not true. Same-sex marriages have been documented not only for a number of societies in Africa but in other parts of the world as well. As among the Nandi, they provide acceptable positions in society for individuals who might otherwise be marginalized.

"A second argument against same-sex unions is that they legitimize gays and lesbians, whose sexual orientations have been widely regarded as unnatural. But again, as discussed in earlier chapters, neither cross-cultural studies nor studies of other animal species suggest that homosexual behavior is unnatural.

"A third argument, that the function of marriage is to produce children, is at best a partial truth, as marriage involves economic, political, and legal considerations as well...."

This happens time and time again. No judgment from our fair-minded intellectual authors until a conservative viewpoint is on the table, in which case it is reduced to their silly understanding of it, beat up, and cast aside.

So much for unbiased.

The whole book is like this. Anthropology should be about understanding humanity, not trashing Western culture.

About the Author
Ellie Whitney, PhD grew up in New York City and received her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English and biology at Radcliffe/Harvard University and Washington Universities, respectively. She has taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, has written newspaper columns on environmental matters for the Tallahassee Democrat, and has authored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which have been revised multiple times over the years. In addition to teaching and writing, she has spent the past three-plus decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology. Her latest book is Priceless Florida: The Natural Ecosystems (Pineapple Press, 2004).

Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.

excellent book! love reading it! i had the 1st edition so i decided to buy this edition (6th). i read it all week long. fantastic information and worth the money. i bought it used for under a buck + shipping so i got more than my money's worth with this one. Ellie Whitey is awesome. really knows her stuff. if you want to learn about nutrition the right way this is the book to do it with.

About the Author
Robert R. Pagano received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1956 and a Ph.D. in Biological Psychology from Yale University in 1965. He was Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington, Seattle, from 1965 to 1989. He was Associate Chairman of the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, from 1990 to June 2000. While there, in addition to his other duties, he served as Director of Undergraduate Studies, was the departmental adviser for undergraduate majors, taught both undergraduates and graduate statistics courses, and served as a statistical consultant for departmental faculty. Pagano was also Director of the Statistical Cores for two NIH center grants in schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. He retired from the University of Pittsburgh in June 2000. Pagano taught introductory statistics courses at the University of Washington and at the University of Pittsburgh for over thirty years combined. While at the University of Washington, he was a finalist for the Outstanding Teaching award for his instruction of introductory statistics.

Not exactly the book I was expecting.........

Well first of all it wasn't a hardcover as described. Second, it was the University of Maryland edition not the picture shown. That was a fun surprise to get in the mail. Regardless the three hole punched version of the textbook seems to be doing the trick. By the way, I have scanned the contents, anyone want to buy my book?

It's Statistics....

If this is a class that is needed for graduation, then this is a good one. It accurately describes formulas to the extent that often I refer to the book over what the professor is speaking. Too frequently the prof can deviate from the actual material that a good sense of grounding is needed. Pagano effortlessly provides this backbone from which to base all statistics.

I can only speak from a psychology student's perspective, but despite my loathing for statistics, I still find this book somewhat endearing (as far as textbooks go). There are several sections that I would not have been able to pass had it not been for this books descriptions and breakdowns of problems and examples.

Though I wish there were more problems per chapter (at the end of the chapter questions and practice problems), this book provides a comprehensive introduction into statistics.

About the Author
Dr. Coltrane has written about the inter-relationships among fatherhood, motherhood, marriage, parenting, domestic labor, popular culture, ethnicity, and structural inequality. Results of his research have been published in various scholarly journals, including the American Journal of Sociology, Social Problems, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Sex Roles, and Gender and Society. Professor Coltrane is author of Gender and Families, Family Man, and coauthor (with Randall Collins) of Sociology of Marriage and the Family: Gender, Love, and Property. Dr. Coltrane serves as Associate Director of the UCR Center for Family Studies and is Co-Principal Investigator (with Ross D. Parke) of FAMILIES FIRST, an NIH funded longitudinal study of Mexican-American and European-American families. He is the 2000/2001 President of the Pacific Sociological Association.

Not a fan of the way it was written, has a definite liberal bias in topics and tone. But it was what my community college required so what can you do lol. The book itself was in ok condition, not great like advertised, but it served it's purpose.

I am a Latino, Mexican American, male femenisth. I read this book for my Women Studies minor family course named The Family in Cal State Dominguez. I really recomend this book to all the people that really want to know the true history of the human family and how it has been changing and why it will always will change... at the same time you will start to see that gender roles were never started at the beggining of humanity...that gender roles were created in diffrent cultures at the hurticultural stage of society and were very strong at the agregarian stage... but right now in industrial societys gender roles are becoming more simmilar little by litlle to be able to survive... I can tell you more about this book...but you need to read it and I really recomended.

About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

Christin J. Mamiya received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of California--Los Angeles, and is Professor of Art History at the University of Nebraska--Lincoln. A recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Annis Chaikin Sorensen Award for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities from the University of Nebraska in 2001, Professor Mamiya specializes in the areas of modern, postmodern, and Oceanic art. She has published a book on Pop art, as well as many articles, catalog essays, and book reviews. She is an active participant in the wider community as both a curator and lecturer.

Required Reading

It's a good book with plenty of definitions and references. If you want to know about the History of Art and the Cultures that go along with it, I suggest this book.

Of course, I am a college student at an Art school and so I didn't have much of a choice as it is a required reading for one of my classes.

I paid for a very good quality book. I got a very used and torn book. The cover is falling apart, the binding is also ripping. The pages are worn out. Very dissatisfied.
