Second, I wanted to avoid the approach that is quite common in other brief histories of Western civilization - an approach that makes them collections of facts with little continuity from section to section. Instead, I sought to keep the story in history. Narrative history effectively transmits the knowledge of the past and is the form that best enables students to remember and understand the past. At the same time, I have not overlooked the need for the kind of historical analysis that makes students aware that historians often disagree in their interpretations of the past."

About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to The Social History of Reformation, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies, and Utopian Studies. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2013). He is also the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

Textbook Required For History Class, Not That Bad Of A History Textbook (-:

Bought this textbook for A LOT CHEAPER than at my school's co-op bookstore! The textbook came in decent shape for the price. There was some highlighting in it but I found it useful for studying.
The textbook can be a little dull to read, so with my history class I would Google AP Euro and the certain subject or definition, and that helped with understanding the material in the textbook AND saved me time from reading the whole section or chapter. The textbook is a great book for history nerds lol. The textbook really just explains what happened and why it happened. It tries to make you understand what happened and that history repeats itself.

Western Civ 101

Great history textbook. I am taking Western Civ 101 online, with numerous essay questions due each week. The book makes the class a breeze. The way it is written is very easy to understand and follow. It's set up very nicely for use with my assignments: every section is headlined with the topic and important points are bolded, which makes it very easy to find what you are looking for without having to look back to the index.
Overall it is a very interesting book. Ancient history is not everyone's cup of tea, but after having this book for a few weeks I am seeing how fascinating it really is. The book is so easy to read that even if I didn't have to take this class I would still want to read it.

Good Price

Have found that Amazon has the best price on text books, new or used, far lower than the local College book store. They arrive with in the week and are in good shape. Returning them is easy too with the reminders from Amazon at end of semester and on line return labels, just try and remember to keep the box they came in.
One caution though, it you are needing a study guide or on line materials that come with new books and have an access codes to use those materials, be advised that once the access code is used once (with the new text book) it can not be used again with the then used text book. Amazon was not real clear on this when we started ordering used text books, best to also order and pay for a new user guide & access code if you will need it with the used text book. Need also to consider ordering new text book with usable access code depending on what may be least expensive.
