About the Author
Richard Lewis is Professor of Art at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he has taught for more than 25 years and previously served as Chair of Art and Art History and Dean of Academic Programs. Currently, he coordinates the programs at its branch campus in Florence, Italy, is the Director of its M.A. in Museum Studies there, and has led student travel courses to England, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, and Japan. He holds a B.F.A. in Visual Arts from Purchase College and an M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Michigan. He is very active in the field of digital art and multimedia, and has also authored a textbook on digital media (Prentice Hall in 2003).
Susan I. Lewis is Associate Professor of History at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She studied studio art at Rhode Island School of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, holds a B.A. in Art History from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in History from Binghamton University. She has contributed to books, published articles in professional journals, and is the author of Unexceptional Women, published by Ohio State University Press.

One of the Best Textbooks

This book was required for my Introduction to Art course. It wasn't cheap, but textbooks never are. I've been pleasantly surprised with the text. Most textbooks are nearly impossible to read like a regular book, this one is an exception. Although I could easily skim the contents for course requirements, I find myself reading every word. The authors have gone beyond a history lesson and provide lots of anecdotal information that I have found very interesting.
The book is very glossy, which makes it tough to read with light reflection in the room. However, this makes the photography very good. Each photo is clear and easy to view. The call out sections are well placed and don't interrupt the reading flow. You can easily skip over them to finish a page and return to read the boxes. The only complaint I have is with the page references they provide when referring to other pages in the book. They must have changed some things around and never updated these references. You won't always find the piece of art referenced on the chapter/page they have provided.
If you're an art newbie, you'll definitely learn some things. It provides a nice overview of art history and I would recommend it.

Solid Textbook

Got me through another semester of school and anything that does that is a lifesaver:) It effectively covers everything i needed to know and now its a great price! It is still the standard for my college and you can tell by using it that i contains reliable information from some of the greatest minds in the fields or modern and historic art.
