Best Cognitive Development Book

I have used various versions of this textbook since it first came out. The book has the depth of reasoning and information load needed for a masters or upper undergraduate course in cognitive development. It supplies students with a balanced and unbiased coverage of the research, describing evidence for and against most of the points discussed. My students, mostly educators coming back for masters or Ph.D. degrees and who do not have significant background in cognition or development, find it understandable and pertinent. It is not written for educators exactly, but they are able to get what they need to from it.

Children's Thinking is one of the best introductory textbooks on cognition available. David Bjorklund has managed to be thorough, scholarly, and accessible. The book provides a complete overview of the major theories and trends in the field and is suitable for a wide variety of readers including both graduate and undergraduate psychology students, educators, and parents who want more insight into the cognitive development of children.
I bought the book years ago and still refer to it frequently. It is a good handbook and provides the needed background to make more specialized books and scholarly articles understandable.
I give this book my highest recommendation.
