Review
"Students will enjoy this book. One of social psychology's most gifted experimentalists displays his characteristically good taste by picking and recounting some of the cleverest and funniest experiments of the "candid camera" variety. Miller brings these studies together, often reinterpreting them, under the unifying rubric of "self-censorship," which is a tremendously useful and under-appreciated concept. Analyzing everyday dissociations between public and private standards reveals a great deal about what makes us embarrassed, and relatedly, what makes us human. Obviously, I found this manuscript to be really interesting and provocative."
"It is first and foremost a terrific introduction to how social psychologists think. Instructors wishing to introduce to students how psychologists build conclusions from data and rigorous analysis will adore this book. The book will also delight and enchant undergraduates, inviting them to consider issues that they face everyday."
"The Author has very natural writing style that works well. There is no trace of condescension here that is found in other social psychology texts. The author has a knack for selecting compelling examples from real-life contexts and featuring inherently interesting experiments. A notable strength of the book is that the writing does not draw attention to itself - it flows in a natural effective manner that does not get in the way of the engaging material being covered."
"The central thesis is innovative and has the capability of grabbing on to a bunch of phenomenon in a unique way - one I haven't seen before. And, it works."
"I found myself writing down research in the columns rather than criticisms. That, to me, is the sign of a good book…the writing style was straightforward, free of jargon, and full of examples. This is the recipe for what students like."
