"This is a book that packs most of what a non-medical therapist needs to know about psychotropic medications into a single volume. It is readable, bordering on entertaining, yet it contains a very solid chunk of technical information. In addition to covering information about medications, it repeatedly reminds the reader of the clients' intrapsychic experience and the utility of psychotherapy, as well as the cultural and societal context within which we practice. There is extensive coverage of the history of the development of psychopharmacology and strong coverage of medication issues with children and adolescents. Throughout the text there is good articulation between diagnostic categories and appropriate (and inappropriate) medication strategies. Many case studies provide excellent illustration of the value of medication in treating mental and emotional disorders, while leaving no doubt that treatment is not the equivalent of cure."
About the Author
Elliott Ingersoll is a Professor and coordinator of counseling programs in the department of Counseling, Administration, Supervision, and Adult Learning in the College of Education and Human Services at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a licensed psychologist and clinical counselor in the state of Ohio, where his areas of specialization are mood disorders, anxiety disorders, religious and spiritual problems, and substance abuse. Dr. Ingersoll is author or co-author of seven books and over two dozen journal articles and book chapters. His areas of publication are psychopharmacology, spirituality, and psychopathology. He lives in Kent, Ohio.
Dr. Carl Rak is Professor Emeritus of Counseling in the Department of Counseling, Administration, Supervision, and Adult Learning at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio and President of the Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center. He has taught various courses throughout the years. His areas of specialization include AIDS counseling, new models of school guidance, and counseling children and adolescents. He is a Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of Ohio and a fully certified psychoanalyst. He divides his time between his private practice and visits with his grandchildren.

A must-have for ALL practitioners!

MD or non-MD, this is a keeper. Most psychopharm books (a number of which are gathering dust on my shelf) adopt either a strictly-allopathic medical approach or a strident anti-medication stance. This book manages to avoid BOTH "political correctness" and histrionics. It's an honest-but-no-axe-to-grind look at ALL aspects of psychopharmacological treatment as it relates to counseling. Moreover, it's short, readable and even entertaining in places. I found some of the biochemistry a bit overwhelming at first, but don't give up - it's one of the RARE professional/educational books I've actually read from cover to cover. This one won't be gathering any dust.
The authors are quick to acknowledge that some of the med info may quickly become outdated. However, in addition to well-researched biomedical info, Drs Ingersoll and Rak present the "bigger picture" of psychotropic medication that won't be going away anytime soon: issues like social pressure to take (or not take) medication, economics, direct-to-consumer advertising and FDA processes. They even touch on stickier topics like psychoactive drugs, herbaceuticals, and the ethical dilemmas that arise when counselors can be held legally liable for med-related concerns but must avoid all appearance of "practicing medicine without a license."
Most remarkably to me, the authors manage to challenge the Western "magic pill" mindset without apology but also without med-bashing. This book includes clear, helpful tools like side-effect profiles, diagnostic indicators associated with good response to medications, how to advocate for clients' access to the newest and best medications, and tips for consultation with prescribing docs.
Because it is not a blind endorsement of allopathic pharmaceutical treatment, this book will no doubt ruffle some feathers. However, since the authors are clearly NOT in the anti-meds camp, their thought-provoking little book is not easily dismissed. Highly recommended!

The intention was good, but the execution is poor

I used this textbook as a graduate student in counseling psychology. The holistic approach, the attempt to present material in a novel way were all good. However, the textbook is poorly (if not hastily) written (in time for a publisher's deadline?) in that the information is not presented clearly and does not flow easily (at least, for a textbook). The authors seem to refer to the works of the same 5 or 6 authors, which to me is a sign of a biased approach despite their attempts at objectivity. The case examples are presented outside of a historic or cultural context and thus have limited value (at least for a counselor).

Easily understandable!

The material is presented in a way that is easily understandable for a therapist without a background in chemisty or biology. The author looks at the whole person, rather than simply a physiological reaction to a drug.
