About the Author
Monsignor Michael A. Becker is pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and serves as sacramental minister at the Altoona Campus of Penn State University. He currently teaches homiletics at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe. He has also taught at Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC, and has conducted retreats and workshops for priests and religious.

An Excellent Introduction

The book is up-to-date and effectively presents the basic concepts. Deals with current power and sphericity concerns. Example SPSS-keyed analyses and APA-format results sections are especially valuable for research training. Uses post-hoc Tukey HSD test. Separate nonparametric chapters. The authors know their material (not always the case with statistics texts) and they provide a solid (higher-level) introduction. Good selection of topics and fairly thorough. Perhaps a bit wordy at times. One of the best available introductions. From a long-time teacher of statistics with no connection to authors.

A Great Book

This is an exceptional book. Another review says the book is not good with SPSS, which is strange because the book includes sections in all the main chapters that explains SPSS output. This book is great this way. The disgruntled student reviewer must have skipped these because they appear in special chapter boxes that (bad) students often skip over. The treatment of z scores (which is not all that crucial anyway - when was the last time you saw a z score in a research article) is outstanding, so the review just sounds like sour grapes to me.
This book explains statistics intuitively and gives great explanations and examples. It is written very clearly. After reading it, I was able to read and understand journal articles much better. It has special sections to tell you how statistics will be presented in research reports and how to read them. This is a great feature. This book helped me so much and I think it deserves seven stars!

Great for undergraduates and for review

If you are afraid of numbers/math and thus statistics this is the book for you. If you are not afraid of math – this is still the book for you. It is clear (mostly), thorough, and gives enough information to explain the math behind statistics. In statistics the math is the easiest part, it is the concepts and understanding those concepts that are the most challenging. In order to best understand those concepts you need to understand the math. The detailed walkthrough of the math that this book gives does just that so that anyone can understand it. The book also quite thoroughly explains the concepts in an easily accessible manner.
The only complaint I have about this book is that sometimes their explanation of concepts are not as clear as I might like. But those cases are few and far between.
Someone complained that this book did not teach SPSS. This is a statistics book, not a book about how to use point and click features in a glorified version of excel. If you want to understand why you are doing what you are doing (and thus what tests to use in SPSS) then this is the best statistics book I can recommend.
As an undergraduate I used this book for a class, and then used it supplement additional statistics classes I took. As a graduate student I used it for the same end. As someone lecturing undergraduates in statistics I have used and recommended this book.
