An engaging writer, Chuck Terry presents this powerful study on the tremendous obstacles that drug addicts drifting in and out of prison must overcome in order to get clean and "make it" in society. Thoroughly researched and based on sound theory, this text covers how societal reaction to drugs and addiction shape criminal policy and behavior. Terry's powerful voice as a writer brings each of "the fellas" to life as he tells their story on how they became addicts and documents their on going struggle with addiction---both in and out of prison. Terry follows the story of "the fellas" as they beat the odds, get clean, and try to make a better life for themselves. And, he tells the somber story of those who are not able to overcome the obstacles of drugs and prison.

Review
"The message contained in [Terry's] book is without exception, one of the first examples that I have seen that cuts through all the traditional scholarship and identifies, examines, and addresses in simple and understandable terms, the internal and external obstacles experienced by convict /addicts who are trying to re-enter mainstream society. I've read an awful lot of what the so called 'experts' have to say about this stuff, and [Terry's] is the first that held any real meaning and substance--the book is a must read for all probation/parole officers in training. It might not be a bad idea to have convicts preparing to re-enter 'the world' read it too. I'm sure I will refer to it often."
About the Author
Chuck Terry is a graduate of the Ph.D. program at the University of California-Irvine where he was a student of Paul Jesilow and Joan Petersilia. He currently is a faculty member in the department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at St. Louis University. He has also served as a faculty member at the University of Michigan-Flint. Stephen C. Richards, Ph.D. University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh

Dr. Terry has written the most important study of prison and addiction. The book takes the reader into a world where addiction leads to prison. He relates interviews and correspondence with men who struggle to overcome their addiction to hard drugs while surviving prison. This is a powerful, well written, look at a seriosu social problem. The book is appropriate for university courses in criminology, criminal justice, and addiction studies. I have adopted this book for a course in Corrections. My students find the book to be a good read and especially helpful for preparation to work as drug treatment counselors. This book is destined to become a classic in addiction studies.

Overcoming Prison and Addiction
By Nadia
This book was not only expensive, but in my opinion poorly written. Although the writer overcame many obstacles in his life, he has a tendency to blame others for his own mistakes. This "book" was so short that I would call it a pamphlet.

Insightful book
By Lmsny93
I bought this book for a Drug Addiction and Mental Illness class I'm taking for my Criminal Justice degree, and it was very good. I small book, not to challenging of a read, and chronicle the lives of a handful of recovering heroin addicts over the span of many years. It gives backgrounds on all the men or "fellas" as they're referred to in the book, and outlines certain social forces as well as how being prisonized effects inmates once they're released. I would recommend this book for anyone going into criminal justice, or anyone with an interest in psychology in relation to drug addiction or prisonization.
