Used as a seminary textbook
By Starshine
This book was the primary text for a seminary class on the New Testament. It is one of my texts that I will keep as a reference, it's that good. We used this text after a study of the Jewish/Roman culture of the first century, which was very helpful background. (Exploring the New Testament World...featured on Amazon with this book as a "often bought with"). The book is nicely organized and lays groundwork of history, literature, culture, and the storytelling genre before beginning with the Thessalonian correspondence ... through Paul's letters, other stories (James, Jude, Hebrews, Peter) and the Gospels. I like the gospel story title summaries (Mark: God's Kingdom in a Tragic World; Matthew: Book of the New Community; Luke-Acts: Gospel as Heroic Narrative; John: Irony and the Spirit. It concludes with the Apocalypse of John: Dawn of a New Day and the story of the development of the canon of the church. It includes helpful maps and a very nice detailed chronology of the New Testament era from 323 BCE (Death of Alexander the Great) to 200 CE. The book features a nice Appendix on how to get started doing your own research on the New Testament. It also has a nice Bibliography, in alphabetic order and also by date of publication. Alas, only a few illustrations and those in black and white, yet the "white space" and layout make it easy to read and engaging and allows note-taking in the margins. Its writing style is easy to outline! :-) This is a book that would be suitable not only for a class but for an individual as well. I especially enjoyed the chart in the section on John's Apocalypse that gives various symbols, images and meanings from Revelation and what they would have meant to the people of the time (to whom it was written).

Barr provides an excellent introduction to the new testament
By Philip J. Yoder
Barr provides an excellent introduction to the new testament. As assigned reading for a New Testament: text in context course at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, I would highly recommend this book.
