Theories of Human Learning: What the Old Woman Said (Available Titles CengageNOW), by Guy R. Lefrancois

Both a serious academic text and a delightful story, this book offers a clear, readable look at a full range of learning theories-from behavioral to cognitive- and also covers memory, motivation, connectionism (neural net models), and social learning. It concludes with a comprehensive synthesis. Its most apparent strength is its easily accessible style, but its greatest value lies in the clarity of its concepts. THEORIES OF HUMAN LEARNING is told by an old woman. But this old woman isn't just anyone. In fact, professors familiar with previous editions of this book may conclude that she is related to Kongor and Kro, those extraterrestrials who, in earlier editions, so successfully guided students through the maze of historic and current theories that help us understand how humans learn. And, wise as she is, the old woman does the job even more effectively than her predecessors in this fifth edition of THEORIES OF HUMAN LEARNING: WHAT THE OLD WOMAN SAID.

This Guy is insane!
By Anthony Weston
The author is absolutely insane. lol. But the content is brilliant. This book is philosophical, psychological, and religious as well. It is an interesting journey indeed. Lots of complicated philosophies on human learning and mental processes are actually presented very decently.

Engaging Text
By Curtis Lehmann
As a professor teaching Psychology of Learning, I found this book engaging, informative, fun, and worthy of the material (a textbook on learning should be easy to learn from). I began teaching this course without much expertise in psychology of learning. I used a different textbook for two semesters but found that my lectures were dry and disconnected. I had trouble making the material engaging because the textbook was too academic. I decided to take a chance on this somewhat odd textbook. This textbook helps make clear how psychology of learning developed historically and philosophically, how the perspectives shaped our understanding of humans, and how the information is relevant to education and clinical psychology. This application helps make the class more enjoyable for the students.

Although there are some sections that are less clear and I wish there were more applications to therapy, overall I found this textbook to be a satisfying textbook.

P.S. Many of the reviews that have been posted are regarding previous versions of this textbook. I have only read the most recent version - What the Professor Said. Personally I did not think using the Professor was particularly helpful but neither did I find it distracting. The textbook is full of enough humor to keep you entertained.

The worst psyc book I have ever had the displeasure of being required to buy.
By Britt Olinder-Stevens
I assume you will buy this book because your instructor makes you. But I would strongly advise taking another class. My instructor picked this book for the formatting, and well, the formatting is fantastic. The instructor did not, however, ever read the text at any point, but felt qualified to utilize the test bank provided with the instructor's copy as well as the the slide show, also provided. That may be fine and even advisable with other instructors or texts, and would have been so here had the text been clearly written. It was not. Definitions were imbedded in the text in such a way that they were unclear. The text was made to be a conversation between the writer and his mentor, which diluted the information and made things very confusing. It appeared to be written with an attempt to be humorous, but it was a great disservice. Humor is often very personal and not the best method to convey novel information. As a cosequence, the ideas were muddled at best. This textbook was an utter waste of my time. I wonder if this text and combination of materials offered may select for instructors with a lack of motivation, or inability to reach the student, because a short read of any chapter should make all that I have outlined clear. I found meatier entries on the topics covered in this text in survey courses. Psychology, as a subject, has always been interesting and mostly straightforward for me, but not so with this textbook. Get out while you still can!
